This is an interesting bug but one with which we cannot find an easy solution. Shamely Apple does not disclose (like Sun does in BugParade) its current bugs, so users are left without any way to discuss possible workarounds. Recently I and Sam filed a bug report in the Apple ADC support website, causing unpredictable bugs in Java 1.4.1, due to incorrect evaluation of expressions. Sun has its own bugs in Java 1.4.2 too and I filed several ones which Sun is working on (the most critical one is caused by an uncaught exception in the Java2D renderer, which causes a later call (via the "JNI" interface) to OS-specific native code to fail. There are several reasons why Java may hang, one of which being system components compromized by virus so that it returns incorrect values to system calls performed by an application. In graphic renderers, generally the bug comes with a compatibility problem in the display driver. If you use a non-Apple graphic card, make sure that its driver was designed for your version of Mac OS X (notably if your board supports some enhanced hardware rendering for text. Try disabling font smoothing to see if this occurs again. Another cause is a corruption of some fonts, or trying to use OpenType fonts that were not tested for Mac OSX (which prefers AAT fonts), but for PCs. If your Asian fonts were not made by Apple, try to check for updates for these fonts. Finally, if nothing else works, you may want to try with the Amber theme which does not use custom fonts, but uses only the default fonts made for your system installation of Java. I don't have a Mac to test all these solutions, some of them may not be adequate for you, and someone at Limewire may guide you more usefully to solve such issue. To get more support, please specify your exact Mac version (including its system locale used to display the default language in the Finder), and the exact version of Java. Going to Apple's Java support web site, you can get to the Bug report form and follow the instructions found there which will guide you to get the relevant system information needed to get all these information. All the information you collect with the Apple's report form can also be useful to LimeWire, so keep a copy of that information. If you file a bug report at Apple's website, we won't be able to get the answer (Apple will only reply to you, and will, MUCH LATER, possibly provide a notice of the bug when it is resolved in a later release (However Apple has recently proposed an update for Java 1.4.2, for which there's still no Change log and no release notes...) May be LimeWire has subscribed a paid support with Apple, so that it can get more information from it; my free ADC account doesnot give me much information. |
