Windows XP Service Pack 2 'Problems' - Some Info |
1 Attachment(s) Chill out, all you anti-Microsoft fanatics (and get used to computing securely BTW), Limewire works with SP2. 2 steps: 1. The first time Limewire runs, the Windows Firewall should prompt to enable 2 programs: "javaw" and "<installation_path>\LimeWire.exe". Enable these 2 apps to pass the firewall when prompted. 2. Per Limewire's own instructions ( http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml ) go to Start | Control Panel | Windows Firewall and "Add port..." 6346 twice with the default scope, once for TCP and once for UDP (the names you give these rules aren't important). Ta da, Limewire works. Amazing, Microsoft did not ruin free computing everywhere, it only enabled 90% of the computers on the planet to connect to the Internet more securely. This should make you happier on its own, even if you ARE running Linux. :-) Cheers, J PS To be fair, before I put this together, I installed the "Event ID 4226" patch from http://www.lvllord.de/?url=tools --which did not help on its own, but I don't think its current installation is crucial to the solution. If the above steps do not work for you, try the utility as well. All I know is Limewire's connection quality is now "excellent" and files are uploading and downloading as before SP2. PPS I've upgrade to Limewire 4.1.5 Beta. |

And, judging from the number of posts on this problem with XP SP 2, it might be a good idea to make this a sticky for a little while... Thing is, I didn't want to do it myself... What ya think there, Peerless Plucker ? |
I tried all of that and it still would not work, then I pinged netstat and found that we need to open more ports: 6346-6349 with both UDP and TCP then also open the gnutella network with the local port that will show in your netstat file and specify the id: 127.0.0.1 when you change scope, remember to do both UDP and TCP. Only then did it work and I just got excellent connection. |

It worked for me I just tried the directions that ZAP had posted and it worked excellent for me, not to mention that I feel safer having SP2 on my system (although it may be a false sense of security,LOL). Thanks ZAP for the post! |

I tried opening all of the ports (6346-6349) on both UDP and TCP and also the local port 2456 from netstat. I still could not connect. Any suggestions. Arps77 |
arps77 are you using Win XP SP2? If so, keep in mind what this update does. It changes your firewall settings back to default & reduces your port availability (to my understanding.) Have you applied the patch for sp2 yet? There's the recent official MS patch & there was an earlier 3rd party one (both have solved 'some' people's probs but not everybody.) Search the forum for sp2 or service pack for more suggestions about how some people solved this issue for themselves. There's also this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=28437 Firewalls is not my area, but I'm a little curious why you chose port 2456?! Also see this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=25119 & also alternate ports: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=24523 |
well i got limewire to connect and search but everytime i try to DL a file it says need more sources i used to get files all the time i cant get a single one.. soulseek works fine this started with SP2..any ideas? i guess im about to give up on LW |
problem i have recently installed service pack 2 for windows xp and although i disabled the firewall my limewire still doesnt work.... it says either connecting or poor but is unable to search or download.. this started since i got the service pack so i dont know what to do.. please someone help |
Hello, anch' I had logon problems and also following the instructions I have not resolved nothing. To the end I have installed java j2re-1.3.1.13-windows-i586-i and it's all ok.Excused the errors, they are Italian. Ciao |
either i'm computer stupid or can't follow directions, but I've tried everything mentioned and i still can't connect... I do have norton firewall, if this has anything to do with it. I've gone to where my preferences should be, and nothing is even mentioned about preferences... I did download the windows service pack 2, so i tried to go to that firewall but it says it isn't even working... .sigh. help! |
When they came out with the SP2 it was mostly designed for the buisness prospects in mind if you are a home user there is really not much need for the SP2.I have adsl connection without service packs or any firewalls and I download at speeds of over 120kbps.Those firewalls can be more of a pain than what they are worth. If it works just keep it that way rather than changing and creating yourself a nightmare. |
running sp2 - cant get past connetcting- enabed gnutella on windows firewall- haven't installed my Mcafee firewall-using a lan internet connection. PLS HELP |
guywithaproblem: an you give us a total desciption of your set up: ram, HDD space available, Connection type, Modem & router brand name & model numbers, Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? Whilst you haven't installed Mcafee, You'll still have XP firewall. Have youconfigured it to allow both LW & java access? See here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml |
TRIED - DOSENT WORK I DID open those two ports and followed the instructions to a T but it still dosen't work. Any other sugestons? |
A solution for the over worked minds I had problems connecting and read the posts to help better inform me of what I may be doing wrong. Well, I am sadly admitting my stupidity to help others from the same embarassment the I personally just endured. When trying to enable Limewire through my firewall (SP2) I accidentaly went to the the windows firewall area instead of the internet connection sharing area. There I had added the port under the exceptions and then left it unchecked. Realizing that this was wrong, I went to the Internet connection area and input the information correctly without deleting my previous mistake. Which in return..kind of cancelled each other out. When I finally went back to the windows firewall area and deleted the extra ports my connection actually worked. I guess I was in a hurry and didn't take the time to read the verbage. I am only sharing this with all of you so you don't have to write in this forum and feel a cloud of stupidity over your head...and to also realize that you may have also made the same mistake and can now get connected. Have fun sharing.... Ms. Embarassed! |

OK. now I don't know why it didn't show up what I typed.... anyhoo...... I tried all that.. and still can not connect.. It's very upsetting to pay for a service and it not work...... |
Ursala:) U seem like you know whats up with these connection issues so i have a question for u... I have Windows XP Home Office version and i am having terrible inconsistencies with connecting to Limewire. Each time i go to my security center and disable my Norton firewall as well as my windows firewall inorder to connect. Sometimes it works and i get an awesome supercharged signal and other times it doesnt work at all. Got any idea what my problem is? I'm kind of knew with computers so try to be as basic as possible with your explanation::confused: Thanks a million and if you feel you could explain this better to me via telephone, I will gladly call you. Thanks uninformed |
Ursula hasn't been around for some time ... too busy elsewhere. Might I suggest that instead of going without a firewall, that you disable XP firewall & configure Norton instead. For xp, go to the control panel, double click on Windoze Firewall, check the disable box. For Norton, see *Configuring Norton Internet Security BTW did you apply the Event ID 4226 Patcher (4226 fix) from lvllord? Quote: "the before 10 half-open connections are being increased to 50 (can be changed during runtime and with the parameter /L) and the CRC is been corrected." BTW after you open LW, let it settle before using. And probably advisable not to use the Resume button on all incomplete files. This can have side-fx such as affect LW's connection quality. May queue your files for much much longer. This will also stress LW, your comp. & internet connection. If you use Resume/Find sources then just apply it to a couple or so at one time. |
Lord of the rings, Thanks kindly for your timely and courtious response. Yes, Windows firewall is off/unchecked and Norton is on. I have to go to the Norton firewall page and disable it for 1 2 3 4 hours etc inorder to get a signal. I dont mind doing this but even then, its hit or miss. Its like it comes on whenever it wants to. Its 50/50 whether or not I can play music. Any other suggestions? Thanks BP |
LOTR I have already advised uninformed to configure his Norton firewall to allow LW access to and from the internet and, because he is new to computers, read through his Norton manual. The extra advice that you have given him will surely help but, I guess, he wants someone to give him step by step help in configuring his firewall. However, "step by step help" is available in Symantec's knowledgebase on their website. UK Bob |
UK Bob I trust all that you have advised me on its just that because of my inexperience, i dont know what I have and what I dont have. My Norton firewall is the one I manually disable each time from the control Panel so I know its configured properly. The Windows firewall box is unchecked and turned off permanently so whatever other advice you have....please share. I'm a quick learner:D BP |
BTW What anti-virus software do you have? Or anti-spywares, etc.? Some of these also require a clearance for LW. I'm not sure which ones need this to be done. Did you apply the Lord event patch for XP? I think ukbobboy01 might be better at handling your case. |
Uninformed I too use Norton Firewall 2005, as well as Norton AntiVirus 2005, in order to get the best out of these products you will have to learn a little bit about them, that is why I suggested reading your Norton manual. Of the two, the firewall is the most difficult to get to grips with but once you have it configured correctly you, like I, can use LW with the firewall on, you will find that LW (and Java) will work the way you expect, i.e. as if the firewall is switched off. Anyway, the following will help you to set up firewall rules for all your internet enabled applications: Scanning for Internet-enabled programs in Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...&osv_lvl=&seg= UK Bob |
u da man! Thanks a million BP |
Turned Firewall off I turned my firewall off b/c, hey mabe that may work, but what do you know, limewire still says the firewall is on but no it is not. What is my problem. I think i have tried every possible thing on this website, so whAt Is THE PROBLEM!!!! |
hi there, first time on, i'm a total computer idiot so i really struggle with talk about ports and tcps and ucps:) anyhow i think i have service pack 2, i'm not sure if thats the blue or green bar recently had some work done to my computer and i cant get back on limewire i went to the firewall / exceptions / add programme then i got limewire on the list and clicked it, still doesnt work to be honest, some of the stuff i'm reading here i dont really understand, i think i need some idiot-proof instructions, sorry:) |
Hi bob mitchell, You need to give some info on your set up: OS (ie Windows XP etc) What LimeWire & Java versions you use Connection type (dial-up, cable etc) Where you're connecting from (home, work etc) Any firewalls you're using Modem/router brand & model numbers Did LimeWire work ok before you had work done on your computer? What work was done on it? Have you had a look through the other stickies in this section? It's worth a look...might find some answers:) |

it's windows xp, i have a blue line when i switch on, not sure what service pack that is limewire is 4.9.37 i connect with broadband, from home i've got windows firewall and zonealarm - i went into the windows firewall unfortunately i dont know what a modem router is or how to find that out i looked in my java plug-in icon, dunno if thats what you need, it says standard edition 1.3.1_04, default virtual machine version 1.3.1_04-b02, plug in 1.3.1_04 |
The blue line means you have sp2. Are you running the Zonealarm firewall and XP firewall together? What happens if you turn off your Win firewall?? Your modem/router is just the piece of hardware that lets you connect to the net. Have a look at all your hardware & see if you can find those brand & model numbers, that info might be needed for someone to help you with your prob;) |
Quote:
i cant see any info about my modem on my computer i'm afraid |
Your modem could be a separate piece of hardware that plugs into your comp;) Have a look at all the stuff you have. Has LimeWire worked ok in the past? Do this test & see if it works: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ |
Quote:
and yeah, limewire worked fine before. i tried installing morpheus yesterday and that worked |
In LimeWire, go to tools > options > advanced > firewall configuration. Do you have 'use UPnP' ticked? If not, tick it then click on 'apply'. Now see what happens. Do the test in my last post, what does it say? |
Quote:
i cant actually get on to limewire to do what you suggest, when i click the icon, nothing happens and the test worked ok |
Hi bob mitchell, I don't really know why your LW wouldn't be opening. I can't remember if there's a 'repair' option for LW (I'm using a borrowed comp at the mo). You could try removing it, then re-installing. Did you get your version at www.limewire.com Might be time for one of the gurus to come & help you out, I think! Happy Xmas:) |
I'd suggest doing both steps 1 & 2 only here: Fixes for Limewire (sample image at bottom of page about how to delete LW preferences folder.) And for Java, get the "Offline" installer version. After doing these things try opening LW again. As far as firewalls go, disable XP's firewall & configure the other using Firewall configuration instructions (click on link) Check your modem/router to see if you can dial/log into it using your browser (if you're not sure, try typing in http://10.0.0.138 or 10.0.0.138 into your browser.) If your model can, see if there's a UPnP option. If yes, enable it. Or your device might have a physical UPnP switch on the actual unit. |
Hi guys ... so i've read all of the above and tried all that i can to help but I'm still stuck with incredibly low connectivity that should be at least connecting in the high 20+ kb/s I'm sooo frustrated... d/ls are taking forever! colebug Hi. System details - help us to help you Please. Recently there's been a problem with people not providing enough details about their setup - despite being asked again & again. So let's make it easy for everyone...the details that we need if we're going to be able to help with complex problems are: Cut n paste Just these Questions, put your answers in bold text Thank You. 1. what OS version (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX, Vista) ? 2. What firewalls you have ? 3. How much ram ? 4. Hard Disk space available ? 5. Connection type (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) ? 6.Modem what brand name & model numbers ? 7.Router brand name & model numbers ? 8. Where are you trying to connect from (house, apartment complex, school, student accommodation, work, etc.) ? 9. What version,LimeWire & Java, are you using. Go to L/W's Help/About L/W, THIS show both LW & Java version.? 10. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider) ? 11. Do this test click here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ should say 'Your test worked!. What happens ? 12. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. 13. Is this your 1st try at LW, or is this a new problem with an experienced user.? 14. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface ? 15. Have you given full permissions for LimeWire to pass through your Firewall ? 16. XP users, Please state XP firewall on or off.? 17. In Start & remove Programs, Is this update Installed, "Security Update for Windows XP (KB931261)" ? If Windows Updates are not seen, Tick the box at top of page, (show updates) 18. Are you using Manual Port faward in LimeWire OR UPnP ? You can check HERE, IN LimeWire Go, Tools/options/advanced/firewall Config These are all contained within the sticky Connection problems? Check here first! but possibly some people are getting a bit confused or lost when we direct them to this sticky & ask them to provide their details. This information can be vital For instance, some ISPs are known for blocking p2p/throttling bandwidth, some connection devices are known for being unreliable in certain situations. So please, help us to help you & provide as much info as you can. If you're new to LW or new to computers & aren't sure how to answer some questions, or don't know what an ISP or router is - just say so. Nobody's going to yell at you:wink: Even if you can't answer all the questions in one go...don't worry. Do the best you can & we'll take it from there. __________________ Peace. |
wow! I didn't even know it was the sp2 that screwed up my limewire. All I knew was that one day it just refused to connect. Haha - I had reinstalled limewire, deleted every file in my shared folder, deactivated all my firewalls and antivirus/spyware programs, and basically made my computer an open invitation to anything on the the web - and limewire still refused to connect. But I came to this forum and thought, hey, maybe my computer updated itself or something (cause it does that, so thanks a lot b. gates). And I opened those two ports the first post in this thread said to open and TA-DA! It worked! Thanks a lot!!!!:super:! |
