Users Unable to Connect with LimeWire 1.6X Look Here

For anyone who is unable to establish a connection to the network using LimeWire 1.5-1.6d on Windows, try using the installer available at:

http://www9.limewire.com/download/LimeWire16d118.exe

This is the same exact code as LimeWire 1.6d, but it uses the Java 1.1.8 version of Java. This is the same version of Java that we were using with LimeWire 1.4b and below, and those versions of LimeWire did not have this problem. This section of our code has changed very little, however, so we suspect that this problem arose as a result of the JVM change.

This is applicable to users who are unable to establish any connection to the network at all with LimeWire 1.5 and above, including users who are receiving the message about not being able to find a port for incoming connections.

This installer will likely work for you, and it would be a great help to us if you could report back any successes or failures.

Thanks very much.

The LimeWire Team

Well Great!

This one does work!

Thanks a lot!

afisk August 14th, 2001 01:38 PM

Glad to hear that it worked for you. I was meaning to contact you directly about it, so I'm glad that you noticed the post. Again, the code for LimeWire that you just installed is exactly the same as the code for the standard 1.6d release, it is just using a slightly older version of Java.

We should have this problem solved using the new version of Java for a release somewhat soon.

To All:

So you are not connecting to the gnutella servers:
_________________________
How did it not work? It still isn't connecting? Can you connect to any gnutella servers with any program? Did Napster work for you? Does AOL Instant Messenger work? Does MSN Messenger work? Answer these questions to the best that you can, and let me know. You can email me: Beckerist@hotmail.com and I can try to figure out from there... If no other gnutella clients work for you, then you are most likely behind a firewall. There are ways around this, but it would be easier for me to diagnose the problem if you could answer these questions.</p>

Unregistered August 20th, 2001 08:24 AM

I instlled this other version, but I am still getting the reply that it can't find a port for incoming connections. What else can I do?

Beckerist August 20th, 2001 08:29 AM

Still?

Meaning this was happening before? Please answer my questions asked above, this will help me solve the question as to whether it was your computer, internet connection, or someone completely different...

Unregistered August 20th, 2001 08:40 AM

No other gnutella server works for me, napster works, aol instant messenger and msn messenger work. I had installed limewire 1.6d,then tried the version posted above and no matter the version, I always get the failure to find a port for incoming connections. Also I do believe that I am firewalled.

Beckerist, help!

im connected to a network in my dorm at cal state fullerton, the net works, but i cant connect to aol insant messenger or limewire. do i have a firewall? can you help me?
thanks, dave

Beckerist August 20th, 2001 08:51 AM

If you cannot connect to AOLIM

You are behind a firewall. Limewire, along with IRC, AOLIM, RealPlayer require a direct connection to the internet. Most firewalls prevent users from being directly connected to the internet, because they access it through a proxy server. Most proxy servers will not work for these applications. There are ways around it, you should check out this site for more details. Another good site is: http://www.gnutellanews.com/information/firewalls.shtml. Try these, tell me what you think.

I was extremely busy today, I will look into your problem a little more. I do not need to know your IP addresses, but please answer my question sent in the last email. That would really help me to try to explain things to you.

I was running 1.6b without problem, and then installed 1.6d and the program would not launch under windows. I have a DSL connection, Win 98, and java 1.3.1 is installed on my machine. The LimeWire16d118.exe program fixed my problems.

HI, thanks for the tip on the other version. Does this mean that I will need to uninstall that other java software that I had to download to make limewire install?
Thanks
Jana

ssudio August 23rd, 2001 09:29 PM

Okay, I'm back. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, uninstalled that java thingy, reinstalled that, and then tried the other version you mentioned at the beginning of this thread. Well it acts like it installs okay, but then either it doesn't connect, or it just freezes the computer. When I first start it up, it acts like it's connecting, but never does.
Now what? I tried uninstalling that java thing, but then these pages won't load correctly.
From what I understand about the other version, it had the java thing built in.
Help!!!! LOL
THanks!
Jana

Ok now !!!

I'm Maurizio with the Mac OS 9.0

I erased everything and installed Limewire 1.6d again. Now it's OK. Maybe something in the old preferences (1.4 version was a nuisance for the upgrade...

I am running a windows 2000 pro machine out of a college dorm room with a LAN connection. I downloaded 1.6d and used it successfully for about three days, however, 1.6d now seems to have trouble maintaining connections. I rarerly reach even 1 tb of files available, and sometimes cannot connect at all. I have downloaded and installed both the alternate 1.6d and 1.4, but to no avail. I am listening on port 6346, and am trying to keep 5 connections up. What am I doing wrong?

TruStarwarrior August 26th, 2001 02:24 PM

Possibly, your college is beginning to block the ports that are used most commonly for file-sharing. :-(

Anne August 26th, 2001 08:13 PM

success!!!

Yeah!! - It works! :) Finally!!!! The other one wasn't working but this one does. Great! Thank you!

bye bye

This new download worked! Could I suggest adding it to the download webpage for other people who are having problems with the original 1.6d download? Thanks!

Worked Like a Charm

Have 3 other computers that had no problem, but I needed this fix for the machine that is still using W95. Thanks.

rwmcgwier August 30th, 2001 08:51 AM

This version 1.6d with jre 1.1.8 in the limewire directory,
has fixed my problems with Windows 2000 professional
here as well. Don't know what sun and microsoft have done to
the virtual machine but limewire and it don't like each other.
(I tried both virtual machines, same problem). It is now fixed.

I am having the same problem, only with a Macintosh G4 running Mac OS 9. Everything is fine on start up except that there is absolutely no connection. Is there an alternate installer for the Mac I can download?

Thanks,

j.macleod@ns.sympatico.ca

TruStarwarrior August 31st, 2001 06:16 PM

Sorry, no mac alternate download. :-(

Use the 1.4b link in the posts above. If 1.6 is being stupid, 1.4b will work for you. There were relatively no problems with it.

Problems Still

Hi guys. I have tried all three versions of Lime Wire, 1.4, 1.6d AND the 1.6118. What happens is this:

1. In Connections, router.limewire.com comes up in the connected hosts screen & disappears after 10 seconds or so, then
2. gnutella.com comes up in the screen and disappers, too.

It never says that I connected. I am on a LAN, and my AOL & MSN Instant Messenger work fine. I am on Win Me. Any help that could be posted would be GREAT! - Thanks, James Hearn

TruStarwarrior August 31st, 2001 10:31 PM

If you are on a LAN at work, there is most likely a firewall installed. Depending on it's configuration, it may not even allow you to use LimeWire to connect to the network at all. Ask your system administrator if there is a firewall set up and if a Gnutella client can be used with it. But then again, if your company condones file sharing, this might not be the best idea. :-)

Yes, this new version works. I have a WinME with 1GH AMD machine. The first 16d didn't even start up, let alone connect. This version starts and connnects.

Thank you.

aol instant messenger works

Limewire worked up until thursday than *poof* I couldn't connect. I can use aol Instant messenger with no problem. I downloaded the 1.6v with the older JAVA script and still nothing. What should I try next??? I even tried Bearshare and couldn't get a connect. Please help.

TruStarwarrior September 8th, 2001 06:15 PM

If none of the FAQ solutions worked, you could try the 1.7 beta.

Unregistered September 9th, 2001 09:34 AM

I had LimeWire up and running. I accidently deleted a file that disbled the program. After that I was not able to get it up and running again. I used the installer in this thread and it came up fine.

I used to be a die-hard napster fan until I installed LimeWire. The only thing I don't like about LimeWire, and this isn't LimeWire's problem, is all the porn that's out there. Even with the filter enabled I still get explicit files posted.

1.7 beta???

When is the 1.7 beta being released to use?

afisk September 10th, 2001 01:31 PM

LimeWire 1.7 beta is currently available at:

http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/download_beta

We will likely be moving this to the official release quite soon, so the current release is quite stable.

We have put a lot of effort into the Mac version for LimeWire 1.7, and we have solved several important Mac bugs. The dreaded "freezing" bug that many people have been experiencing should have been solved, although you may experience some freezing when LimeWire initially starts.
