i did all that now, and it still does not work. my roomate is out of town, so his computer doesnt have that IP stuff done to it. does that matter?

doenst having a static IP make it easier for hackers, especially with no firewall???

what do you mean by LW on norton? i went to control pannel << security settings and it says my firewall is on
Well if Norton Firewall is permanently on & I had no control over it I'd dump it! Trash it. Better off using Win XP firewall & making exception for LW & Java. (If norton is on, you'll probably never be able to open a port for LW!)

Yes you probably have a modem router. As for which is safer, static or dynamic I'm not in the know, I use a mac.

You'll need to re-check your settings. You must port forward the same port number for both LW, the modem-router & any firewall. Make sure your settings have been 'saved'.

I am so lost.....

I still cannot get connected. I was told to cancel Limewire, the one that had the 2yr membership. I don't know where to go to cancel them. I was given the right site to go through, but before I pay for that, I need to cancel the first one. Is anyone getting any luck at all with the Limewire 4.0.8 version? If so, what are you doing to get connected. At the bottom of the page it tells me 6 files shared. I know a little bit about pc's, but this is hard. I've read through alot of the posted threads and I'm still LOST!

Applebottom : Set your XP Firewall as described here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml
As for your Norton package I'm not sure what it contains but it might be very wise to follow these instructions: Read the tips by Norm about Norton (click on link)

OK you're not very computer savvy, but this is hopefully the only time you'll need to worry about this! Once we get it right, you won't need to think about it again (with any luck.) ;)

You must pay attention to all the details. Good luck! :)

what do you mean by setting a port for java? i made the two for limewire already. i also tried to uninstall norton, but its telling me that i have to be logged into the system, but i dont know how to do that. i dont think i even can because i dont have a subscription. i REALLY hate norton.

i looked at norms advice, but it doesnt help me. i dont have rights to change anything in norton. basically all i can do is scan, and have this gay firewall that i neevr wanted in teh first place

what if i tried using an older version of limewire? would that change anything? if so, where can i get an older version?

I don't get this. I have Norton's everything up.
Norton has never interfered with my LimeWire, though.
It could be the whole fact that it's with XP, though. My computer is a ME, and Norton works perfectly fine with everything.

Sometimes, Norton won't uninstall without the CD. Don't ask me why-I don't get it at all. If you don't have the CD, then try just deleting all the files, and then click on the uninstall button? That sometimes works for me when I need to get rid of excess crap.
