Important!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SOME ISP'S ARE FILTERING OR BLOCKING THE PORTS YOU NEED TO USE TO CONNECT TO THE P2P NETWORKS ALTHOUGH EVEN WITH MY ISP (INSIGHTBB) I'VE NOTICED THE GNUTELLA NETWORK IS THE ONLY ONE THAT IS BLOCKED/FILTERED BUT OF COURSE MY GUESS WOULD BE B/C ITS THE MOST POPULAR NETWORK. THERES ABOUT 1,000-10,000 POSTS ON HERE ABOUT CONNECTION PROBLEMS AND/OR SOLUTIONS TO HAVING CONNECTION PROBLEMS. I FOR ONE HAVE READ A LOT OF THESE POSTS AS WELL AS TRY ALMOST EVERYTHING... THIS INCLUDES THE PORT TESTS AND SHOWED NOTHING WAS BLOCKED, I'VE TRIED DELETING THE .LIMEWIRE FOLDER TO NO HELP, UNINSTALL/RE-INSTALL LIMEWIRE, FORCE IP, ETC ETC ETC AND NOTHING EVER WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!! JUST GO AHEAD AND DELETE ALL OF THOSE POSTS RIGHT NOW B/C THEY ARE USELESS!!!!!!! BUT JUST NOW WHILE DOING A LITTLE MESSING AROUND ON LIMEWIRE I FINALLY FOUND A SOLUTION SO READ THIS POST AND DELETE ALL THE OTHER NON-SENSE ONES THAT DONT WORK. OK, HERE ARE MY STEPS ON WHAT I DID TO MAKE LIMEWIRE WORK... **NOTE** THIS WONT NECESSARILY WORK IN OTHER PROGRAMS CUZ SOME DONT HAVE THE OPTIONS NEEDED. OK HERE ARE THE STEPS

1.) GO TO TOOLS>OPTIONS>ADVANCED>PORT AND MAKE SURE THE BOX SAYS 6346

2.) GO TO TOOLS>OPTIONS>ADVANCED>FIREWALLS AND CHECKMARK THE FORCE IP BOX AND MAKE SURE THIS ALSO SAYS PORT 6346

3.) GO TO TOOLS>OPTIONS>ADVANCED>PROXY AND CONFIGURE A PROXY THAT WORKS. THERE ARE TONS OF PROXY SITES OUT THERE JUST YAHOO SEARCH 'PROXY LISTS'
IN MY CASE I USED A SOCKS V5 PROXY THAT I FOUND TO BE WORKING SO HERE IS AN EX. OF HOW I IMPLEMENTED THE OPTIONS.

4.) CHECK THE SOCKS V5 BOX AND IN THE PROXY WINDOW I PUT 69.240.156.39 AND IN THE PORT BOX I PUT 3380

****NOTE**** PROXIES CAN WORK FOR 2YEARS-2DAYS-1HR-5MIN SO 1ST RUN A CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE PROXY U WANNA USE WORKS FOR THE TIME BEING YOU WILL ONLY NEED A WORKING PROXY FOR LIKE 5MINUTES WHILE YOU DO A CONNECT TO THE NETWORK

5.) CLICK APPLY AND THEN OK

6.) HIT FILE>DISCONNECT

7.) HIT FILE>CONNECT ... IF U DIDNT CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE PROXY WORKED THAT YOU ARE TRYING U WILL NOW FIND OUT IF IT WORKS OR NOT CUZ IF SO THE NETWORK WILL NOW CONNECT!!!

8.) ONCE CONNECTED, JUST DO A RANDOM SEARCH LIKE '50 CENT' OR WHATEVER IT IS YOU MIGHT WANNA TRY BUT JUST MAKE SURE WHATEVER YOU SEARCH WILL BRING UP A LOT OF RESULTS BECAUSE IF DONE CORRECTLY YOU SHOULD NOW SEE RESULTS POPPING UP

9.) IF INSTEAD OF ALWAYS BRINGING UP ZERO RESULTS, UR SEARCH ACTUALLY RETURNS WITH SOME RESULTS YOU ARE NOW PROPERLY CONNECTED!!!!

**NOTE** ONLY DO THESE NEXT STEPS IF U PLAN ON KEEPING LIMEWIRE UP FOR A VERY LONG TIME **RECOMMENDED**, THUS U WONT HAVE TO CONNECT BACK TO THE NETWORK FOR A WHILE CUZ EVERYTIME U CLOSE OUT LW AND START IT BACK UP OR DISCONNECT AND RECONNECT BACK TO THE NETWORK U WILL HAVE TO DO STEPS 1-9 EVERYTIME WHICH I KNOW IS A HASSLE BUT IT'S BETTER THAN NOT BEING ABLE TO GET ANY FILES AT ALL.

10.) GO BACK TO TOOLS>OPTIONS>ADVANCED>FIREWALLS AND UNCHECK THE FORCE IP BOX

11.) GO TO TOOLS>OPTIONS>ADVANCED>PROXY AND CLICK THE NO PROXY BUTTON

12.) CLICK APPLY THEN OK

13.) ALL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CONGRATS

Ne0teric January 27th, 2005 01:38 PM

i would only recommend this solution until you can like change ISP's or something, that is if you can even. Cuz staying with an ISP that does this kinda lame shi* means you condone their doing's and thats not the message we need to send.

Thanks. That fixed my problem for a week or so. I'll be letting insight know the proper place to lick my brown eye first thing next week, Apreciate the help

Satanzlilhelper January 30th, 2005 10:33 AM

I can't find the "force ip" box, where is it?

Lord of the Rings January 30th, 2005 10:36 AM

Force IP instructions & sample image

Satanzlilhelper January 30th, 2005 10:50 AM

Well this sucks, maybe I have a different version of LimeWire, but I don't have the Port selection or Firewalls. The closest I have to Firewalls is Firewall Config. After entering it, however, it doesn't have a "force ip" button, any ideas?

Lord of the Rings January 30th, 2005 10:52 AM

Doesn't sound good! Where did you get your LW version from? It doesn't sound like the genuine article. You should only get it from LW's official website: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml or your personal downld page if you're a pro user.

Satanzlilhelper January 30th, 2005 10:58 AM

Yeah, I downloaded it from the official website, I'll try deleting it and re-downloading it.

Satanzlilhelper January 30th, 2005 11:00 AM

Something I noticed, when I was deleting it, I saw version 4.4.00 or something like that, when I went to the download site again, it said 4.2.6.

Satanzlilhelper January 30th, 2005 11:07 AM

Sorry for getting so off topic, if this gets to be too long, I'll start a new thread. I re-downloaded it and it still doesn't show the two selections I mentioned before, any ideas?

Lord of the Rings January 30th, 2005 11:19 AM

See et voilà's post here: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=33128 And it seems that the force ip option has been removed. So I'll have to see how this works.

Oh but don't go to that site link in the 1st post, I suspect it could be a scam site.

et voilą January 30th, 2005 11:30 AM

LODR needs to use 4.4! There is no force IP anymore, only a firewall option (however the router section in the firewall setup is the new force ip option). To do force IP in 4.4 select the manual port in the router section.

Bonne chance

[Edit: Salut LODR!]

Satanzlilhelper January 30th, 2005 12:28 PM

I listened to et voilą, then configured it to be used with Ne0teric's method. I've tried several IP adresses, all to no avail. I'll just have to contact Insight I suppose...

Ne0teric January 30th, 2005 08:50 PM

calling insight will do no good, they've blocked the network and they will deny that they have done so. all u gotta do is find a 'live' proxy and configure it in properly which u should be able to find proxy faq's throughout google search if need be, but to me its all a bunch of non sense that us users shouldnt have to be going through. the proper SOLUTION is to switch isp's lol just use what i wrote as a temp fix until u can do so...

Satanzlilhelper January 31st, 2005 10:14 AM

Thanks for the help, after looking through the posts a second time I got it up and running! Thanks!

Ne0teric February 1st, 2005 08:22 AM

One thing i've noticed, once u connect to the network (try to get turbocharged) u can uncheck the force ip and put the proxy back to (no proxy box)... if u dont, i've noticed the search results and speeds are slower thus i beleive u mvoe at ur proxy speed so uncheck the force ip box and select the no proxy box and click apply and ok if u wanna search and d/l at regular speeds!!!

aviator11 February 1st, 2005 07:40 PM

Has anyone who has had this problem with Insight changed IP's yet? If so, what was the result?

Ne0teric February 5th, 2005 10:26 PM

chane ip's??? that wont do nothing for ya bud. u would still be going through there service and on there network so you'd still be SOL

Ne0teric February 5th, 2005 10:32 PM

above is a link to a good proxy site which always has a working proxy. these are HTTP proxies..

KyraSkye February 8th, 2005 08:29 AM

I have tried that. I have Netzero and have tried everything so far including what you said but I cannot connect at all. How can I find out if Netzero has LimeWire blocked?

Thanks!

However there are different types of filtering & filter programs that are used. One of them being Sandvine. Amongst the techniques sometimes used is port blocking of those using p2p sharing programs. Perhaps initially a detector after which a filter of some sort is applied to that particular user.

Internet Bandwidth Shaping
(copy from a University's Policy page)

In order to help ensure that the University's Internet connection continues to effectively meet instructional needs and the University's academic mission, the University uses bandwidth shaping (aka" traffic shaping") to manage its Internet data traffic. Bandwidth shaping assigns priorities to data traveling to and from the Internet. Bandwidth shaping helps us better manage our Internet connection, and provide more reliable Internet services to our campus community.

What it is
The device the University uses to shape Interent traffic is a single purpose hardware and software solution. Our "bandwidth shaper" is located between the campus network and our campus firewall.

What it does
The bandwidth shaper does two things: network monitoring and bandwidth shaping. We can monitor our campus Internet connection for types of traffic using our network bandwidth. We can also see the computers using the most bandwidth. Traffic shaping lets us set rules for how we want to use our Internet connection. For example, we can say that web traffic from instructional areas get the highest priority on our Internet connection.

What it doesn't do
The bandwidth shaper does not affect data traffic within our campus network. Data traffic to and from university computers on campus for e-mail, the registration system, network neighborhood and other campus resources are not affected by traffic shaping. We only prioritize traffic going to and from the Internet.

How it prioritizes University Internet traffic
We can shape Internet bandwidth by virtual channels and by individual connections. We organize by the type of Internet application being run. Our intent is to place instructional needs first. Web traffic gets highest priority. Peer-to-peer traffic is limited, and prioritized based on bandwidth available.

Sample Graphs from the bandwidth shaper
Following are sample utilization graphs from the bandwidth shaper. These graphs show the top 10 applications using the university's Internet connection for inbound and outbound traffic. Rates shown are AVERAGES, not peak traffic, measured during a low volume one hour time period.

Manual Port Forward is on both versions of LW. If yours doesn't have one then perhaps you didn't get yours from LW & it's a scam version. See Manual port forward instructions & sample image LW's menu Tools > Options > Advanced > Firewalls

This is the manual port forward (previously called 'force ip') for windows. There's no difference. You would use port 6346 except in circumstances where your isp provider is blocking this range of ports.

wbellew March 11th, 2005 09:49 AM

connecting but never does

I have tried every method that I have saw on these message boards. I bought pro 3 days ago and can't seem to get past the connecting message. I had free limewire installed on this same computer in November and had no problem. Can you think of anything else I might try. When I tried the force port method, I did get an error message that I didn't have internet connection or firewall blocking. I am using XP but don't have the firewall running. Could I have another one installed that I don't know about? Please help me!!

Atlantia March 11th, 2005 07:19 PM

yeah. I've tried everything i read. nothing. Even when I turned off the firewall, it says that firewall is blocking it from connecting.
Why are we all spending our time on this thing that's not working at all? How is it better and efficient!!! bs

Lord of the Rings March 12th, 2005 06:04 AM

The program works great! Unless you go thru an isp provider that slows speeds for p2p or blocks p2p or ports or a business that blocks certain programs or complicated routing equipment or going thru a university/school many of whom now block p2p, then LW works great. Don't blame LW for your own circumstances. If you want trouble-free use of LW then overcome or stay away from the above types of problems. Setting up a proxy is a last resort to overcoming these issues.

hsojjosh March 14th, 2005 09:13 AM

connecting

My Problem: I downloaded Lime wire and when it says connecting down by the red boxes, only the smallest one turns green. When I type in a search - Ex. 50 cent - the blue bar that goes over "50 cent" gets very close to the end and stays there for ever.

I have windows XP. I have tried puting in that gnutella stuff that the limewire website gave me. I also tried turning my firewall off. I even tried your method, but I still get the same problem. Can you help me?

P.S. What is an isp?

Lord of the Rings March 14th, 2005 11:07 AM

isp = internet service provider

hsojjosh your problem doesn't sound as though it's to do with blocked ports at least. Nor does it look like an isp problem from what I can see. It sounds like you're rushing into using LW. Let LW settle before using. Be that 20 mins or over 30 mins. And don't use the Resume button on all your files or your connection quality may suffer. Check out all the links you come across from this link HERE (click on link)

Lord of the Rings March 18th, 2005 09:40 AM

There's always a chance your isp provider has applied some type of filter or blocked ports.

Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say ‘Test Page was a Success’. What happens when you go there?

And you tried deleting LW's preferences folder whilst LW was closed? Instructions: Fixes for Limewire

Lord of the Rings March 19th, 2005 01:47 PM

So there you go. Amazing what a reboot can do to help stop some other processes that shouldn't be there, etc. (Answer acquired via pm. I have also had this issue where a reboot solves some simple issues. Just thought I'd finally say why the past few posts seem to be loners. lol :D)

mojo_the_migo March 19th, 2005 06:30 PM

hmmmmm I used the original proxy/port and IT WORKED!!

Problem is I disconnected and it no longer works, ******* campus computer police! Ok, so I have played with atleast 10 different proxy/port combos given here

http://www.freeproxy.ru/download/lists/goodproxy.txt

and so far squat.

NOW, do I keep trying or should I give up? Also, does it matter if I use socks V4, V5, or HTTP to run a proxy/port or should I try a proxy/port for each? I would especually like to know how well that site works for anybody else.

Lord of the Rings March 19th, 2005 06:36 PM

From what I've read some others have had success with it & not been back to complain. As far as socks 4 & 5, yes they're a little different. 5 allows a broader definition or something. See http://www.clipcode.org/messaging/socks.html

I'd suggest you keep trying. I believe that proxies for socks 4 & 5 are different.

If you have doubts about those ones, google for more.

mojo_the_migo March 19th, 2005 07:06 PM

google steals from French news...something wrong right there.

But yeah, thanks lord. Out of curiosity, How the hey can they block the program? don't need to answer that question, I am just curiouse.

Lord of the Rings March 21st, 2005 08:47 PM

We do what we can ... simple as that! If we don't know then ... well if no other members/guests know or are willing to share then it's ...

Tougher than this is setting up a http proxy which somebody at university wants to do ... That is also another option. But I have no personal experience at proxies so have to rely on user feedback. But Peerless (a mythical dark horse mod) said he tried out a proxy with success so ... after all user feedback backed up with a mod's success ... it can be done by many but need's to be done with care ... not all proxies work for everybody ... that was pm'd to me by NeOteric himself. You need to find the right one (plus have LW set up correctly!)

southern_made March 26th, 2005 05:11 PM

still cant get limewire to work....

tbensel March 27th, 2005 09:29 AM

I don't have a proxy or firewall option under advanced... can anyone help? I use limewire 4.8, is there any way I can download limewire 4.4?

Lord of the Rings March 27th, 2005 10:35 AM

SOunds like you haven't scrolled down far enough in your option window or it's not fully showing. You might need to drag the window down. See: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...6859#post76859 as one example of what can happen.

St3vo28 April 8th, 2005 05:51 PM

i read through the post and found that some of the wording on LW is different but i think i managed...but the proxy and port do not work. i searched up yahoo and they gave me tons of proxy ips but i dont know which socks to use...either 4 or 5 .. if any one can help me please reply.... and im not even sure if this post even helps MY problem.... well this is my complaint.... --> Every so often when I connect to Limewire, I get this message saying that i have no active internet connection or my firewire is blocking something. I am using Limewire through a router (Netgear RP614) and I keep getting kicked off the internet when using Limewire. I have to keep unplugging the router and replugging it back in. I've went a day without using Limewire thinking it was something else and I narrowed it down to Limewire. Is my problem with the router? Is there a firewall that is blocking my connection with Limewire and the internet connection? I got sum basic info that may help...
1.OS version - Windows XP Professional
2. Firewalls - The Netgear router has its own firewall
3. Connection type - Cable
4. Modem - Linksys model # - BEFCMU10
Router Netgear - RP614
5. I have LW version 4.8.1 PRO - recently downloaded, Java 1.5.0_02
6. isp provider - Comcast
Please help. Thank you.

Lord of the Rings April 9th, 2005 06:35 AM

St3vo28 whilst Linksys modems & routers can utilise UPnP technology, I'm not sure about Netgear. Meaning that forwarding a port might help you. You can find your model here: http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm & if you choose to do this then start with setting up a static ip, then forward a port (such as 6346), & finish off with Manual port forward instructions within LW & sample image & 2 posts after that.

hi

i can't get LW to work, and i think that my school is blocking the ISP. I have tried to do the instructions on the board... such as forcing the IP etc. and it said that you couldnt' force to 6340 if it is being blocked, so i was wondering what i would force it to? also if i try to use a sock5 ip address what port would i use?

when i clicked on http://www3.limewire.com:6346/
it came up as being "unavailable" i have also tried deleting all of the preferences. thanks

Lord of the Rings April 14th, 2005 07:48 PM

The 6346 test page has been down for about a week. You can try another port no. I think on an earlier page I listed a port that someone else used with success. Why not try a port in the 4XXX or 5XXX range. Port selection & proxy no. are not related per se. * Edit: Ports from 49152 - 65535 are open ports, worth trying.

(Static ip setting up is often described by modem-router instruction/support pages if that's required.)

Blasted IT people

I to am having trouble connecting, but I'm at work. For a long time Limewire wasn't a problem here but now, no connection. And I've tried to read all the links that have been suggested but they all have been blocked by "Information Security". Furthermore, It's hard to get proxy lists because those sites are blocked as well, I have to glean what I can from the search results that have Proxies in the result description. And I've tried a few using the methods here to no avail. I'm pretty much outta luck huh? I wouldn't mind just that right now I don't have a home connection so all my emailing, surfing, and downloading has to be done at work.

devlin May 26th, 2005 03:07 PM

my isp said they block ports 8 ,1433,1434

limewire does not use those ports so it cant be mi isp(verizon who is blocking those ports. i used limewire and azueres but 3 weeks ago i just couldnt use it anymore and i just started using azerues and i loved it. i dont know what i can t p2p programs anymore. i was downloading 10 gb that day i couldnt use it anymore. i dont know what to do i used the proxy thing and it only worked for about 3 hours then it got disconnected. what does it do that?......and why do ports get blocked or why cant i use any p2p program anymore? that's very strange . so is that it once your isp blocks your ports do you have to use proxys for now on? that sucks ..is that the only solution?...... please help.....

thanks sabrina devlin

Er...

Okay, I have a slight problem...

My ISP is InsightBB, and yet I have no problems connecting. I instantly get all green bars and it says "Quality: Excellent".

And yet my searches never turn up ANYTHING. And just to test it, I searched for things that would obviously turn up results. I typed in "Britney Spears" in the Audio search under Artist, and got nothing. Not ONE result. I've had LimeWire two days and can't get a result on anything.

I tried doing the fix thing posted here. Still got nothin'.

Weird thing, WinMX works fine on this computer. However, my Kazaa Lite Revolution won't connect at all.

What the Hell is wrong with my computer?

darkfighter June 2nd, 2005 10:04 PM

i have a problem with limewire too. whenever i download it, everything works, but when i click on it, absolutely nothing happens!!! I've tried what seems like almost everything, but it still won't work. I've tried downloading it and redownloading it over and over. Someone's got to have some advice!!!:(
