Default school network problem..

Hi, I know that many people post about these things, but I have yet to find an answer, so I am posting as well.

Anyway, I am using a college network, and Limewire will not connect. This seems fairly normal for school networks, but the deal is, the guys across the hall can connect fine, and they didn't do anything to get it to work, it just does.

Since I know that Limewire CAN work on my school's network, are there any suggestions on what might be wrong with MY computer??

Thanks

Have you configured your firewalls? http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

Is your Java up to date? Java 1.5 (take the JRE)

Which version of LW are you using?

Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say ‘Test Page was a Success’. What happens when you go there?

How is your firewall setting setup? (Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls)

Allright, here goes:

I have configured my firewalls correctly (i even turned them all off at one point to try to figure it all out). I went through several of the other threads, to make sure my question wasn't already answered.

>Also, my Java is 1.41... do I need to update it to 1.5?

>I am using the newest LM 4.4.5

>when I went to this site: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/, it said that it was successful

>I am using a AMD Athlon XP 2.8 GHz with Windows XP, 512 Ram, 250 GB hard drive

>I have no firewalls currently (that I know of)

>Not really sure about my modem, it came already in the computer, I think it is a NVIDIA nForce, maybe? and I am not using a router.

Anyway, I hope that is the information you need, and THANKS!! for all the help so far!

Also, Lord of the Rings, I actually had previously read that thread you posted last, but I'm not sure I would be able to figure out any other proxies but my own, and even if I did, I'm not sure what I'd do with them.

I'm not much in the know about proxies either. But perhaps this might work: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=33712

It's not unusual to hear that one or some can connect on a school campus.

OK so we know that from your exact location that port 6346 is not being blocked. My next question is are you actually connecting via the school network or are you connecting independently. (Nvidia is your video card - do they also make modems?) What i mean is are you plugging into the school network via an ethernet card or are you using dial up or is there a separate modem device you use to connect with?

As far as Java goes, you should have at least Java 1.4.2 & not 1.4.1 Not a bad idea to update your Java. Java 1.5 (take the JRE) Lw will certainly run better with it.

Sorry it took me so long to reply.. I had to sleep and go to classes

Anyway, I updated my Java, which, even though it didn't help with my limewire, I'm sure it is always better to be up-to-date on stuff like that, so thanks LOTR.

Also, sorry I don't know who actually makes my ethernet card, since it came pre-installed I have know idea. I just went under my device manager and looked up network adaptaters, and it said that Nvidia nForce stuff or whatever.

Anyhow, I connect through the schools ethernet hook-up, through their network. I cannot connect to the internet any other way here...

Have you at any time been connected to the network? May i make some simple suggestions. Set LW's settings for not to connect on opening (ie: Tools>Options>Connections>untick option to connect on startup.) Keep tips closed on start up.

Then re-open LW. Leave it for 20 mins. Then go LW's menu File>Connect & select. Leave it for another 20-30 mins & see if it connects. Keep your shared files to more than 50 but less than 200 to make it quicker to startup but not be filtered out by those who expect a minimum share amount. Even after 20-30 mins if it appears not to be connected search for the beatles using an Any Type search.

If all this fails, I'd suggest you try a different port no. to connect thru. Perhaps 6344. Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewall Config>Listen to port no. Oh make sure your firewall setting is set to UPnP (the 1st option.)

Well, LOTR, I tried everything you said.

But, alas, nothing has worked.

I do appreciate all of your help, though, and if I do by some miracle figure out how to get it to work, I will post it on here.

Thanks again,
Cornell
