Default connection problems

I thought I was overly computer literate, but after reading all these threads, I guess I am not. I need to be walked through this because I cannot figure it out. Thankfully, by the sounds of things, other users can't figure it out either.

I am using windows XP. I can connect to Limewire for a while, usually anywhere from ten minutes to an hour or so. Limewire still downloads the files it was downloading, but I can't search. I can get it to re-connect only if I shut down Limewire and restart the program. I am only using dialup through my mother's work, so I never even get a whole file downloaded before this occurs.

I tried going into the advanced setup and adding Gnutella, i tried doing it in my firewall settings, and doing all the tasks I could decipher in the threads I could understand.

If this problem is fixable, but I am just too "computer-lingo challenged" to understand, could I ask the favor of explaining it to me in layman's terms so I can have some peace of mind? I love Limewire on my DSL on my old laptop, but I can't get this to connect long enough to do what I need to do!

Thank you so much!

You use dialup thru your mother's workplace. That might be the issue. Dialup doesn't offer great speeds (5-7 KB/s up/down.) If someone else is using the same connection at the same time then the available bandwidth for your LW will be very limited (& vice versa for the other person.)

Firewall configuration for LW can be found here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

Do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image Is the result True/False? If it's false then you're firewalled. This won't necessarily stop you from downlding though.

Some hints:
* After opening LW wait 10 to 20 mins before using. Let it settle down 1st.

* Don't use the Resume button on all incomplete files. This can have side-fx such as affect LW's connection quality. May queue your files for much much longer. This will also stress LW & your comp. If you use Resume/Find sources then just apply it to a couple or so at one time. On dial up perhaps just one at a time.
