A proxy is a possibility but still not guaranteed to work. Proxies can be bothersome to set up & trial & error. You may need to try many proxies before one works. See A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire pages 1 & 2 which has a link to alternative instructions. You could also try different ports for LW to connect thru.

yes using a proxy is the only way you will thwart the evil campus firewall. a free available proxy to use is tor from http://tor.eff.org -- however it gets slow due to the large amounts of abuse/spam going through the system, so try it various hours of the night.

If you dl off P2P illigally from your collage you might get caught and fined. Most schools have firewalls up for a reason and they are not easy to get around them or to bypass them.

good point.
many schools have IDS (intrusion detection services), which alert the system administrators if certain activity goes on the network. Snort, one of the most popular open source IDS programs, has rules which stop/detect p2p traffic, which can trigger the firewall to cut you off or just e-mail to the sys admins about what happened. downloading is serious in college. if you downloaded something they didn't like or you violate some rule, you potentially risk losing a scholarship. |
