Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Question

I performed the instructions in the above links 4-5 times but no use !!

One thing I noticed Grandpa tht the port number 6346 (in Listen to Port < Firewall options) keeps changing to some other ports whenever I start LimeWire 4.9.30 Pro!!

Cant understand why tht keeps changing!!

How to keep tht stable to 6346??
Anyway even if I make it to 6346 it still doesnt connect!

There is no ISP blocking problem here as I checked with them and know them since long! Infact their own offices use file-sharing softs!!

Pls! Help!

I turned off both firewalls (Windows and NIS 2005) but LimeWire still says 'Firewall detected'.

Talking NEWS FLASH - I turned on my Zone Alarm and Limewire works now.

UPDATE TO POST, BELOW.

I TURNED ON ZONE ALARM (BECAUSE LIMEWIRE WORKED PREVIOUSLY WHILE I RAN ZONE ALARM) AND LIMEWIRE WORKS NOW. GO FIGURE.

I have tried all of your suggestions.

Dumped Limewire Basic and Java 1.5.
Reinstalled Java 1.5. Restarted.
Reinstalled Limewire Basic. Restarted.

Still, Limewire says it can't start because of Firewall problems.

I also updated my network connections to allow for open Gnutella ports (6346 for UDP & TCP).

I connect via Time Warner Cable's Road Runner ISP.

I am running Windows XP. I use a Linksys router and am running the XP System 2 firewall as well as Norton Utilities. I tried shutting both firewalls down. I have opened ports within my router's "applications and gaming" settings.

NOTHING is working. Please help.

Panzer

You may need to manual port forward UPnP is changing you listening port because it is blocked. Make sure NIS is properly configured to give LimeWire access.

Unhappy

I have done tht but no use! I dont hav a modem or a router. I get internet directly through cable wire tht goes into my LAN card! Then I have to dial through LAN to get internet access! I dont know wht this type of connection is called, its like dial-up but through LAN which verifies username and password and connects in couple of seconds!

Anyway I hav unistalled NIS 2005 frm my PC, disabled Windows Firewall, Reinstalled Java, reinstalled LW 4.9.30 Pro , but with no use, LW still detects some kind of firewall!!

I hav also updated Windows XP SP2 to the latest updates available , removed all junk frm my PC , removed all kinds of invalid registry values through registry cleaners even defragmented HDD for a change but no use!

Now the Listen to Port stay on 6346 since I switched to Manual Port Forward but nothings changed!!

I havn't tried to new LW 4.9.33 but will give it a try!!

The only thing I havn't done is formated my HDD!! Which will be the last option to try!

Pls keep helping!! Ur suggestions are most welcomed!

From the description of how you connect I am guessing you live in a apartment complex and it sounds like your ISP is a PPoE service. If you are in a apartment I believe there should be a router where the trunk line is split to provide service to the different units. I really am not sure about this but if there is a router some where it could have a NAT firewall in it. And if there has been any complaints about slow Internet service where you live they could have blocked file sharing ports. You may want to try some different ports. I have read where some people are having some success on port 80.

I tried many other ports including port 80 (which by the way is used by Google Earth Pro to connect) but no use?? Google Earth Pro works perfectly on port 80!!
Still to try the new version!!
U guessed it right Grandpa tht my internet connection is a PPPoE service! And I found some kind of machine on the top of my building which distributed cable wires to subscribed customers!! Couldn't see wht it was since it was closed in a locked box!!

Keep sending inputs!! Thank U!

Hey Grandpa/Panzer,

I have a connection with a PPPoE service as well - with a router/switch in a secured box placed on the top of my building. Every apartment's ethernet cable line is branched from this box.

I called up my ISP - they say they do not touch ports above Port# 2000. Thus GNUtella being 43xx is untouched by them. They also said they do not use any bandwidth limiters or bandwidth shapers to shape traffic on these ports or any ports - they only use of limiters was to limit speeds to suibscribers as per their subscription.

But they also said that service to the end users in the city was distributed/managed/controlled by the city's cable operators. And that my subscription/service was managed/controlled by them. They said that though they do not limit/shape bandwith, certain cable operators are at the discretion to control and manage their own traffic by using limiters or shapers - or by controlling Ports. My cable operator - the one who has put the router on my building top has also said that they do not block any ports - but did mention that Kazaa is limited during the daytime and is completely opened in the nights. Kazaa however used a different port than GNUtella - and logically therefore, GNUtella should be coming thru.

Also, test for 6346 give me a Your test worked! answer.

So now we're wondering where could the problem possible lie. Something in that router perhaps?

Like Panzer, I also noticed that my Listening port is not 4346 - but is 34979 (I swear it was 11xxx the last time I checked).

Question at this point: Does the listening port HAVE TO BE set at 4346? Can't it be something else?

Panzer, I'd like you to try the listening port at 34979. If that doesn't work, then have you tried it at 6346 itsef? I dont know how changing a listening port can do the trick - but perhaps it's worth a shot!

Try it and let us know.
As for me, I'm still stuck with my problems....

Regards, AG

Typing error - GNUtella is 6346 (and 6347) - NOT 4346 as typed above.
My apologies for the typing error.

No it doesn't have to be. Port 6346 is simply the official gnutella port but you can use any of the legal port no.'s. A Guide To Alternative Port Selection

I'm not sure why anybody's port no. within LW should change from one occasion to the next.

I've heard of other people having issues in apartments where there's shared connections. And as Grandpa said, there's probably a NAT firewall within the main router. I guess you could ask the landlord if they could open port 6346. I wonder also if, with everybody sharing the one connection, whether the connection gets a bit strained at times. There's so many possibilities. Such as an unreliable router losing packets. Also, the isp provider might also be filtering/shaping against p2p sharing. It would be helpful if you could find out who the isp (internet service provider) is.
