LW says i have firewall on But i really dont, i have never had it on within windows xpSP2 and i only use norton anti 05 with protection worm on. I get the same message as everone else, one bar for strength and then it says i m not conencted to the net. I was able to use LW a few weeks ago no prob. here is my info: 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) WindowXP sp2 2. What firewalls you have? XP's version(which is disabled) 3. How much ram? 512 4. Hard Disk space available? 20 gigs 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) cable internet only, no tv option 6. * Modem & router brand name & model numbers? * Linksys BEFCMU10 modem and BEFSR41 for the router. 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? Home 8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) limewire 4.3.37 9. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)? omnitelcom.com , very small provider in Iowa. 10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? No only this computer. 11. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ Test works fine. Are you sure you don't have any other firewall other than XP firewall? Nope, none that i know of, unless my router/modem has one, but its never been a prob before. Any suggestions? thexrock |
1. Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 in Fixes for Limewire (sample at bottom of page.) See if that helps. If not see below. 2. Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & make sure UPnP option is ticked!!! Linksys devices use UPnP which allows LW to communicate directly with them to open whichever port is requested. LW is UPnP capable. Also, go to Tools>Options>Speed & tick Disable Ultrapeer Capabilities. Remember to always press the Apply button after any changes. Give LW plenty of time to connect. Leave it for up to 20+ mins to allow it to load properly all the incompletes & shared files & try to connect. |

Would the microsoft framnetwork have any play in this i wonder? thexrock |
Make sure your Linksys devices are set to use UPnP. I'm not sure whether they have a switch which enables this or it's on by default. Within LW, you set it for UPnP not manual port forward. I don't even know what MS Framenetwork is. See if disabling it helps or vice-versa. |
1 Attachment(s) With some Linksys routers you have to enable the UPnP feature from the online page you can get there by typing 192.168.1.1 you will then have to enter your password if you have never been there before the default password is admin. Once you are there click on administration you will be able to enable UPnP from there. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...all-router.jpg |
Hi, yeah i have connected to limewire before, so i know its compatible with my linksys, however i did just go into the adminpanel and i did have to click on enable upnp. and i clicked save settings, now do u think this requires a pc reboot or a modem reboot for changes to take affect? thexrock |
i tried it, and it removed the firewall thing that pops up in limwire but download speeds are low or nothing at all but i have connected to limewire |
yeah a balloon popped up and said found new device, but i still cant get connected, as a side note, i also went around my router with just the modem and it still doesnt wanna give me more than one bar. thexrock |
is your cable provider optimum? |
nah its www.omnitelcom.com small provider in iowa, i asked them point blank whether they block limewire, they said they dont, i guess i ll have to take their word for it. dont know what else i can do? thexrock |
I don't know what the story is with Linksys but with my router I need to reboot the router after major changes. It looks like Grandpa's gone for the moment to fill us in on it. |
yeah, not so sure its the router, i v tried to connect to LW w/o it and i still cant connect. thexrock |
No you do not need to reboot with LimeWire open go to tools/ options/advanced/Firewall and see what port you are connecting to. If it is something other than 6346 it is working. If it is 6346 you should probably reboot. |

All right you may need to port forward The link below will tell you how. Just scroll down to your router make and model. http://www.portforward.com/english/r...outerindex.htm |
ok i added port range forward, i assume the last number should be a 1 right? because when i go back in it, it shows 100. I assume i keep the same listening port at 49174 correct and router config stays at the recommended UpnP? thexrock |
It should be 100 or whatever your static IP is |
Ok, well i m assuming its the standard default of 192.168.1.1 , but that is what i type to bring up the admin page, so would that mean my static ip is the same? How do i check to be sure? thexrock |
|
ok, yeah did forget about that step, but i followed the instructions and i tried lw again and still cant connect though, are there any other settins i should change within lw or anywhere else? thexrock |
I believe that no matter what your ISP says they are filtering or blocking P2P software. Have you tried any other P2P software. The Link below will take you to the BearShare Lite web page the last time I tested it, it did not contain any spyware see if you can get it to connect. http://www.bearshare.com/lite/ |
I have the same problem. Limewire says I have a Firewall on too. Before I had a Firewall, it started saying this, now I got one, and unblocked Limewire and it still says I have one. I also deleted my .limewire directory. Anyway, here's how it is: Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) Windows XP Proffesional 2. What firewalls you have? Sygate but I have Limewire unblocked. 3. How much ram? 256 MB 4. Hard Disk space available? 40 Gigs 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) Broadband 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Modem: SpeedStream 5200. Router: Linksys BEFSR41v3 7. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. Limewire 4.9.37 Java 1.5.0_06 8. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)? Bell Sympatico 9. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. I have two computers. I also have Azureus Bittorrent Client configured. 10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It says 'Your test worked!'. |
1337_ Did you follow the instructions found earlier in this thread about setting up UPnP on you Linksys router. Your router has a NAT firewall in it. |

Anyway, I fixed it. Here's how I did it. This might help. I switched it from UPnP to manual port. Then, my manual port was 6436(I think that was the number). Anyway, I then went to the listening port in the top and I switched it to the same number as the manual port was. I reset Limewire and everything went fine. Now I'm getting speeds like 180kb/s when I have 8 hosts so I'm cool. |
BTW, this problem also caused my Limewire do disconnect a lot of times but its all fixed now. |
The problem you may run into is you might notice your Internet slowing down while using port forwarding with your router. If this happens you will have to reset your router by unplugging it then plugging it back in after a few sec. then pushing the reset button for 15sec. I would recommend if this happens to configuring your router and LimeWire for UPnP and you will avoid this problem. Believe me it took me a while to figure out what was happening with my Linksys BEFSR41v3 router but once I did things were allot better. |

talked to my isp and they said they dont block any connection like that, however they said it is possible that my ip address could be block from sharing anytype of copyrighted stuff that limewire may share, so i dunno, again i have tried connecting w/o my router and it still wont work, so maybe i am being blocked from that stuff. thexrock |
The port forward set up would be the same. And I also believe you are being blocked but not from sharing copyrighted otherwise bitlord, bittorrent should be blocked. I think your ISP isn't being totally honest. |
i guess, but i dont see what they gain by blocking the limewire stuff and not the bittorrent stuff, its both basically the same thing in a way. thexrock |
LimeWire and the Gnutella net is far more popular than bit torrent thus more users. By blocking the common ports for the Gnutella net they Can gain back allot of valuable bandwidth. |
yeah, your probably right, i wonder if kazaa lite would work, thats not part of the same network is it i wonder? thexrock |
It might work for you |
Your ISP will NEVER tell you the truth about blocking P2P use. If you cant connect or download via Gnutella then they ARE blocking P2P. Gnutella is an open network the one the RIAA/MPAA doesnt like. Some dialup ISPs do block and limit bandwidth from P2P use and schools most of them, wont allow P2P at all because they dont want to be sued. |
when i do this it just come up to a pic of the page and i cant do anything.i need help. please. |

ok. i used to have dial-up connection and limewire worked fine.now i have wireless and now limewire wont connect.ive been to many sites and have tried to fix the problem but nothing works.its hard for me to explain my problem to because im ot all that good with computers. |
Do you ever connect at all (just one bar), does it stick at Starting Connection or is it just always Disconnected? Do you see the firewall icon (brick wall in front of the blue earth)? Read this Connection problems? Check here first! Make sure you're only using 1 firewall (don't forget that Win XP has it's own firewall) & that it's configured for LW. You'll find a firewall link in that thread. You'll find a link to the port 6346 test... what result do you get? What are your details? OS(Win XP etc) LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see) Firewall you're using Modem/router brand & model ISP Connection type (DSL etc) Where you connect from (home, school etc) Are you sharing a connection with other computers Is this your first try with LW |
i onyl get one bar. and like i said im not very good with computers.and ive tried that connection problem place but i dont understand a lot of it. |
Do you see the firewall icon? Did you try to configure your firewall (did you go to the firewall link? It has pretty good instructions)?? Did you do the port test? What are your computer details??? |
Since getting a new computer I cannot connect at all i have: Vista Norton 360 160GB + 1GB Broadband Modem speed touch House Tiscali Test Worked Yes brick wall showing England If anyonhe could help would be grateful many thanks. New comer  |
Listen everyone... And listen carefully... There's a webpage that can downgrade (opposite of upgrade) limewire... go to OldVersion.com... There you'll find all the old versions of Limewire :-) |
Thanks for your reply. I am very new to this but why would I want to use the old version when I have installed the new version and that doesn't work? |
well, we all know that the old version works...;) |

Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). Good ol' USA |
I solved this problem for just about a week ago.. It turned out to be that my ISP was blocking almost every port I had access to before..:shoot: So, double-check with your ISP's before doing anything.. |

(b) With the WRT54G, they are a "lemon" in the respect their firmware has bugs and Linksys never repaired them all. It is best run in Port Forward. I would recommend you port forward it for this computer. Most important step is step 1: Static ip for XP ______ 2. Find your model here PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall and find LW on next link and follow instructions. ;) (c) Cox have been known to be not especially p2p friendly, and have been known to block certain users using p2p programs. (d) Make sure you use a different connection port from any other LW being used on the LAN network. |
