Unhappy Could Not Connect Overnight!

Hi all,

I have been using limewire for sometime now and all along it has been working flawlessly, but recently it seems that I am unable to get connected to the network overnight. I have gone through the sticky and the tips offered but just could not kick start the connection.

I am quite sure that I did not make any changes to my wireless router nor to the limewire settings. I really need some help here.. Hope somebody could help me out a little. Thank you all!

Details as follows.

OS - Win XP Pro SP1
Limewire - 4.10.9, Java - 1.5.0_03
Firewall - Zone Alarm
Router - Linksys WRT54G
ISP - Starhub
Connection type - Broadband
Where you connect from? - Home
Are you sharing a connection with other computers - No
Is this your first try with LW - No

Do this port test & see if it works http://www3.limewire.com:6346 - It says "It works"

Anybody??

I do no have SP firewall enabled, and the Zone Alarm firewall had limewire enabled.

I have also tried Bearshare, but I was unable to connect to the network also..

You read my mind with that last post... that's pretty scary, not many people can do that

Do you have UPnP enabled within your router? If so, just check within LW's options > advanced > firewall config & make sure use UPnP is ticked. Or have you used port forwarding?

Edit... Starhub might be using traffic shaping but I can't find any evidence of them actually blocking p2p

Well, I have to download stuff somehow right?

Anyway, I have tried both UPnP and portforwarding method. But both seems to be unable to work out this time. I used to use portforwarding. Now the settings on LW are UPnP.

I have been using Starhub for sometime now, and it does not seem to affect my LW connection and my download speeds.

Another thing is that, the blue globe on the bottom right of the LW is blocked by the wall. BUT! I have enabled LW on my Zone Alarm. Does this mean anything? Thought that if this was stated, it might help something. Thanks!!

Help~~~!!

If you're seeing the firewall icon then it's either your software firewall or your router. Double check your ZoneAlarm setup. Double check that the XP firewall is off. The firewall is a problem but it doesn't necessarily mean that you won't be able to connect. The fact that you can't use Bearshare either makes me think of your ISP causing a problem. But then your port 6346 is not blocked...Have you tried any other p2p apps?

You could try changing ports, there are instructions & a list of alternative ports here
Alternative Ports

You could always try reverting back to port forwarding & see what happens?

I have checked the ZoneAlarm Firewall, and it has LW enabled.

My XP FW has also been double checked.

But, the FW of my router has been enabled. Should I disable it also? I have yet to try other P2P programs other than Bearshare. My guess is that I would not be able to connect to the networks too. Or do you have any P2P programs to recommend?

I have tried to change ports but to no avail. what should I do next?

Will it help if I install an older version of LW? Is there a link where I can DL it?

Thanks!

Was your router's firewall not always enabled? You could try disabling it & see what happens... just as a test. You can always enable it again, right?

I'm really not a router person, so I have very little knowledge of these devices! As for other p2p, I only use LW & FrostWire (pretty much the same).

Installing an older LW version isn't going to help I'm afraid. Has this problem literally happened overnight? I really would suggest that you at least call your ISP & make sure that no p2p blocking is going on. If only to rule it out as a cause of your problems

But first, just try shutting off that router firewall... if the firewall icon goes away, that's great but if you still can't connect... I'd be interested to see.

I have tried disabling the router's FW, while LM was off and still could not get connected.

Yes, the problem happened oernight literally. It work flawlessly before, whether it is 4.10.9 or later. I have even tried formatting the computer but still could not get it connected.

The method of shutting off the router firewall does not seem to work. There is still a wall blocking the blue globe.

I have also called Starhub (my ISP) and they have said that they have not blocked any P2P software to date. I take it that they are telling the truth. So it seems that using a proxy should not be needed?

What should I do next?

This is a very old link but it's worth seeing: http://azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/index.php/Bad_ISPs

Try a connection & listening port somewhere between 49152 - 65535 such as 64049. If you're port forwarded then you'll need to do another port forwarding.

BTW is there any way to by-pass the router or is it a combined router-modem?

You said you were also unable to connect using BearShare. How about Phex? http://www.gnutellaforums.com/general-discussion/55271-phex-2-8-4-final-released.html

How about the connection port. Try that also ... but as suggested you may need to port forward for that port.

BTW after changing the listening port did the brick wall disappear from the blue world icon?

BTW did you try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.) Make sure you check both locations!!!

But if you do this, you will need to reset all your LW options & settings such as your Port Forward settings, etc.

If none of this works ... try connecting at a different time of day. eg: if it's during evening you can't connect, try during the daytime or vice versa.

If that doesn't work ... I'll give you another version of LW to try which is less firewall sensitive. But only as a last option.

Another thing you might try is reconfiguring LW and your router to port forward if you haven't already done this. If your router lost power for some reason it may have reset itself to the default settings some routers will do this.

Lord Of The Ring,

the wall in front of the globe was still there even after i changed the listening port. I have also tried changing the "Manual Port Forward" value. After changing the Manual Port Forward value, I also did a re-forwarding of the port. Still I can not get LW to connect.

I have deleted the preference file like a dozen times. There is also no difference whether I tried to connect during the day or the night.

Seems like my problem is going to a dead end? Nothing seems to work for me.. ARGH~~~

Grandpa,

I am quite sure that the configurations of the router have not been changed. So I think it has not been resetted?
