Currently connecting to the network ... search may not return many results until ...

When I search for something, it says: "Limewire is currently connecting to the network. Your search may not return many results until you are fully connected to the network."

Also, I do have the brick wall in front of the globe, and have went and enabled the uPNP or wutever thing in network connections, and have also did the other thing where I allowed the port that showed up on Limewire. I'm so confused tho, it's all so above me. I don't even know for sure wut kind of firewall I have...

Lord of the Rings September 14th, 2006 06:18 PM

Check out all the sections & both posts here Connection problems? Check here first! (click on link)

rabonnobar September 15th, 2006 11:48 AM

I don't get any of it tho. I don't even know wut kind of firewall I have...

Lord of the Rings September 15th, 2006 04:08 PM

Check your control panels. That's where some firewalls put their control programs. Can you answer to questions in post #2 of the link I gave you please. ;)

rabonnobar September 15th, 2006 06:24 PM

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) Windows XP
2. What firewalls you have? I believe Windows Firewall
3. How much ram? not sure, where can i look to find out?
4. Hard Disk space available? 39.9 GB
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) dial-up
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?manufacturer: Lucent; idk how to find out the rest
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? home
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. LW 4.12.6 & Java 1.5.0_06
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)? AOL
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? 'Your test worked.'
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. no
12. Is this a your 1st try at FW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. 1st try
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of FW's interface? yes

Lord of the Rings September 15th, 2006 06:51 PM

Hmm AOL, reknown for problems with LW.

Re-do your firewall settings for XP: Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

Do you have any advanced settings for AOL. I do know they offer special security, etc. Amongst them may be an external firewall, & also a spyware program that's not compatible with LW.

An older post about AOL: AOL upgrade causing connection problems?

rabonnobar September 15th, 2006 07:22 PM

I re-did my firewall settings for XP yesterday.

I have no idea if I have the advanced settings or not, how do I find out? I read the thread...

rabonnobar September 15th, 2006 07:30 PM

I just learned that we have Norton Anti-Virus but I have no idea if it automatically comes with the firewall or not... Bout to look around some, but plz lmk in case I can't figure it out (I doubt I can, I'm not overly tech-savvy)

And I cant believe I haven't said this : THANK U FOR ALL UR HELP!

rabonnobar September 15th, 2006 07:34 PM

I just saw that we have AOL Spyware Protection and turned it off.

Lord of the Rings September 15th, 2006 07:45 PM

Did LW connect after you turned the spyware protection off? Close LW & re-open & try again. Give it time. ;)

For spyware protection, we recommend these: (a) ad-ware (FREE), & also (b) Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE)

rabonnobar September 15th, 2006 08:02 PM

I just disconnected, waited a few minutes and am then gonna try again.

rabonnobar September 15th, 2006 08:11 PM

Just got back on, still got the brick wall and the error message :(

Lord of the Rings September 15th, 2006 08:42 PM

Let's try this. Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change the listening port to 64049. Then reconnect. If still no-go, go back to the setting & change connection port to the same.

Here's some extra explanations for setting up XP firewall (don't know if they'll be of help but worth looking at): (i) Settings for XP Firewall, & also (ii) Setting Up WinXP Pro FireWall

rabonnobar September 15th, 2006 08:50 PM

Didn't work. Also, should uPnp be on?

rabonnobar September 15th, 2006 08:52 PM

Hmm, those threads didn't work. *bangs fist on table* I hate AOL lol!

birdy September 15th, 2006 09:21 PM

Did you ever work out if you have a Norton firewall as well as the XP one?
Try going start > control panel > network connections > right click on your local area connection > properties > advanced. You'll see Windows firewall there & I'm guessing if you have a Norton firewall then you'll see that too (don't use Norton so this is a bit of a wild guess:o)!!

If you do have a Norton firewall, make sure the XP one's turned off & just configure the Norton for LW.

rabonnobar September 16th, 2006 10:10 AM

Hmm when I go to the properties of the conncetion it doesn't show any firewalls...

rabonnobar September 16th, 2006 06:57 PM

Ahhh we have Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition. My dad got it from his work. Does this help yall help me? Lol. Idk if it came with a firewall or not, how do I find out? I haev Limewire enabled on the Windows Firewall, even disabled it to see if LW would work, and it didn't even when Windows Firewall was disabled, so it must be something else. I also have AOL Spyware disabled. Wut else to do?

OttifantSir September 16th, 2006 07:04 PM

Try going to Connections in Control Panel and select View from the menu. Then Details. Expand the STATUS line by double-clicking on the right edge. With me it says "Connected, with firewall" (I hope, as I am using Norwegian)

If this is so with you, then look to the left of the window(XP). There should be some choices there where one should read something like "Change properties for Windows-firewall"
Click this and you will come to the settings for it. If you want to use Norton Firewall, simply turn off Windows-firewall.
If you don't have this, right-click connection, Properties->Advanced->Windows Firewall->Settings and then turn it off.

Haven't used anything from Norton for about 9 years, so I can't help you with that unless you send detailed screenshots. I may be able to see something from those.

rabonnobar September 16th, 2006 09:23 PM

Ottifant: Yeah, I knew how to do that, but thanks anyways. I have turned it off before but the brick wall still appears in front of the globe. And I don't even know if I have Norton Firewall or not.

Also, something I haven't thought about: I have AOL Parental Controls on my screenname. I have the Mature Teen setting. It lets me go to limewire.com no problem, so I wouldn't think it had anything to do with the application being blocked, but I still wanted to throw that out there.

rabonnobar September 18th, 2006 02:11 PM

Someone plz help me I still have the brick wall.....

rabonnobar September 18th, 2006 08:48 PM

I just discovered that Windows Firewall is the only firewall I have, and even when I turn it off I have the brick wall. *scratches head*

OttifantSir September 19th, 2006 02:39 PM

Parental control

I have never really used this, or been blocked by this myself, but I would think that any P2P-program will be blocked from usage as it is just one more way of retrieving porn or ***ually explicit imagery and stories.

Limewire doesn't have Parental Control, just filters which anyone can turn on and off as they prefer. If you are a Mature Teen, as you say you have rights for, ask your parents (or admin) to allow you to use Limewire. If they are sceptic to what you may be searching for, you might allow for some rules, ie. saying when you are using the program, and allowing them access to where the computer is so they are able to check what you are downloading. Or other rules, like only using it when they unlock it, etc etc. The spesifics you really have to get straight on your own.

To me it doesn't sound like it's a problem with either firewall or connection when you mention this, but a program controlling the connection in much the same way as a fire-wall (denying access).

If this doesn't work, post back.

rabonnobar September 19th, 2006 02:43 PM

Hmmmm... well I am not blocked from limewire.com itself, the website, so I don't even know how to get them to allow me access, and I'm sure my parents won't know how.

OttifantSir September 19th, 2006 04:46 PM

Parental Control

As I said, I haven't used such programs, but this much I know:

You can block the connection (not getting on-line at all without a password), you can block spesific programs (Limewire being one), block a group of defined programs (P2P, downloaders, IRC, etc), block spesific web-sites, or block anything that has spesific words in them.

You may be allowed to surf the Web and even visit Limewire-site and download the program in a web-browser, but you are not allowed to use Limewire since this is a whole new dimension to using the Net.

If they don't know what to do, read the manual. Sit down with them on the computer and make the modifications yourself, under their supervision, to allow Limewire to use the connection when you are using the computer.

If you don't get this to work, tell us which program you are using for parental control. If needed, I will download it and see if it can be altered. Be spesific though, a version number of the program is always a good help.

rabonnobar September 20th, 2006 06:56 PM

I think I'm gonna email the AOL customer support address.

Without knowing if you have tried this, and not knowing the version of your Limewire, I ask: Have you tried checking the settings of Limewire itself?

Click Tools->Options

A few steps that may, or may not work:

1-Then go to Speed. Have you set the speed correctly? This may be telling people you have a slower or faster connection than you have and then they send you and you send them wrong information. That is never good.

2-Connections: Try disabling connect on startup. This will allow the program to start fully without having to try to find a connection right away. Try connecting manually.

3-Filters->Hosts: Check that you haven't inadvertantly blocked so many hosts that Limewire has a hard time finding any.

4-If none of this works, try checking Program Data (a hidden folder in Documents and Settings under your profile name) for a folder named Limewire. (I don't have any, but different versions can do completely different things). If it's there, go to Add/Remove Programs and un-install Limewire first, then delete this folder. Find a folder, probably at root, named Incomplete and delete this. Move any files you have in your download folder and delete this too. Re-install Limewire.

5- If all the above doesn't work, if you haven't yet tried it, disconnect the cable or de-activate your modem/network card or wire-less connection and re-start. Be sure you have downloaded Limewire first. Do step 4 (or as much as you need to) Activate your modem/network card/connection and re-start Limewire.

That's it from me. If you haven't gotten it to work now, I'm at a loss.:D

bramburger September 22nd, 2006 09:27 AM

Some more info:

I though it didn't work because I was on the school's internet connection, but when when I came home, IT STILL DIDN'T WORK!

The weirdest part is that downstairs, on the PC, it works perfect!

greeneyes41 September 22nd, 2006 04:42 PM

Ive been running LW for a long time. I did a clean re-install on my PC and now, I cannot connect. Ive used the same settings as always and when that didnt work I tried the connection suggestions on the main page. After that, I went to Microsofts site and re checked all of the settings for XP, followed by coming here.

Ive tried all of the suggestions I could find, including 3 un-installs/re-installs/up date ect..

Could someone please tell me what to do now, if I dont fix this problem soon, Im going to write LW off, which I really dont want to do, however Im getting pretty frustrated.

Thanks

birdy September 22nd, 2006 04:47 PM

Go to post #2 of this thread. Follow LOTR's link, there's a lot of info about connection problems. It will also tell you what info we need to help you:)

greeneyes41 September 22nd, 2006 05:38 PM

ok, Ive followed it all step by step.

I could never get the page to load where it said, 'Your test worked!'.

and I am now stuck at the plug and play. I dd all of it but when I got to the Universal plug & play, it wasnt there.

I read on and tried to figure it out on my own, but I just dont understand what Im suppose to do next.

Sorry. :bangh:

birdy September 22nd, 2006 09:14 PM

Do you mean that you can't enable UPnP within your router, or when you got to LW's firewall config page, there was no option for using UPnP? How did you have your router set up previously (UPnP enabled, port forwarded or neither)?

If the test doesn't work, it means that LW's default port is blocked.
You could try changing to a higher port, one in the range of 49152-65535.
Tools > options > advanced > firewall config will get you to the page where you can change the listening port. If you change listening port, you'll also have to change port numbers allowed through your software firewall & connection ports if you're running with port forwarding or UPnP enbled within your router.

It might be easier if you could give us a few details, it's pretty hard to help without knowing anything about your setup!! You'll see the info we need within the connection problems sticky:wink:

greeneyes41 September 23rd, 2006 04:48 AM

ok, Im sorry. Before when I set up limewire, I just -set it up. I never had to really do anything, none of this, it just worked.

So, I really am lost here.

I know that I am blocked this time, I have even tried shutting down my antivirus (AVG) and my firewall (windows XP) but that didnt work either.

When I went to My Network Places
view network connections
advanced
bla bla
networking services
there was no universal plug & play to check.

Ive changed the listening ports to 6346 because 6620 didnt work.
I have no idea what to do with the proxy within LW.

I will go back to where you sent me and I will try again.

bramburger September 23rd, 2006 07:04 AM

Still doesn't work, even when I disable Norton firewall...

EDIT: It works, when I booted up LW, it seemed like it updated itself, after this, i got connection!

greeneyes41 November 11th, 2006 06:25 AM

It's me again. Been following all of the posts about not being able to connect. Trying all of their ideas, learning. Alot. Still no luck though. Most frustrating. I thought at one time I would just give it up, but I'm going to stick with it till I get it!
Running Windows XP Home
AVG
Windows Firewall
So, still looking and still not connected.

birdy November 11th, 2006 03:24 PM

Tell us your details please (sorry for any repeat questions);)
System details - help us to help you

Also tell us all the things you've tried since your earlier posts.

greeneyes41 November 11th, 2006 04:26 PM

1. Windows XP HOME
2. Windows Firewall
3. 2.20GHx 448 of Ram
4. Free space available 53.4 GB
5. DSL
6. Siemens Speed Stream 4200
7. House
8. 3.0
9. Alltel
10. Can't do the test, page won't load
11. NO
12. New problem experienced user
13. yes

It would probably be easier to tell you what I haven't tried.

I havent tried everything on your site, but darn near it. Probably everything on at least the first five to seven pages of all your connection posts. Im not trying to be vague, Iv'e just tried so many different things. I could hunt and copy and paste all that I've tried if you really need it.

A
dding ports doesnt make it happen. I have even uninstalled, shut down the firewall and all secutity and installed. It still is blocked.

What else do you need to know?

birdy November 11th, 2006 04:46 PM

Have you tried enabling UPnP within the modem?
Have you tried port forwarding?
Have you tried changing to a higher port (say 64049)?

Have you been able to use any other p2p apps successfully since you've had this prob with LW?

Check Aaron's posts in the thread below for some info about Alltel...might have something to do with your problem?
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...ghlight=Alltel

greeneyes41 November 11th, 2006 04:53 PM

I'm not sure about enabling the UPnP within the modem. I did go to the firewall and tried enabling it there. Is that what you mean?

I do not know what port forwarding is.

I have tried all kinds of port numbers, using all that I have found on here, Microsoft and free ports

greeneyes41 November 11th, 2006 05:19 PM

cant get any other p2p's to work either. All the same problems. Can't connect.

This problem started when I switched from Symantic Norton to AVG

birdy November 11th, 2006 05:25 PM

Have a look through the user guide, it explains how to enable UPnP within your modem. You also need that option checked within LW's tools > options > advanced > firewall config. It's no use having that UPnP option checked if you don't have it enabled within the router.
http://subscriber.communications.sie...UG_English.pdf

If enabling UPnP doesn't help, try port forwarding. For advice, check the site below. There are step-by-step instructions. Don't forget to set up a static IP first, else port forwarding won't work. In this case, make sure that the manual port forward option's checked within the LW firewall config.
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...0/Limewire.htm

I use AVG & it hasn't stuffed anything up for me. Are you using the free version?

greeneyes41 November 11th, 2006 05:31 PM

dang the weather. Got to shut down for awhile.

Been checking out the other links you suggested. I'll be back as soon as I can. Let you know what I figure out so far.

Thanks for the help!

greeneyes41 November 11th, 2006 07:35 PM

ok, been doing alot of the stuff that you linked me to. Tried the port forwarding but I cannot purchace that right now. So it could not do the router for me.

I think my problem might be, or at least part of my problem is with my firewall. When I add a port it keeps changing the IP to the name of my computer. Is that normal? There is no way to save it, no place to click "apply" or anything.
I will keep trying the fixes. Even though I havent made any real progress, I feel like I have to be getting closer. :)

greeneyes41 November 11th, 2006 07:48 PM

Setting up UPnP (Universal Plug & Play) on your modem/router

I do not have a listing for Universal Plug and Play - UPnP settings for XP)

This is what my choices are

Internet gateway device Discovery and Control Client
Peer to Peer
RIP Listener
Simple TCP/IP Services
UPnP User Interface

What now?

birdy November 11th, 2006 08:30 PM

Are these options that you see when you've logged into your router? Sorry I'm a bit lost here...what can't you purchase for port forwarding? There's nothing to purchase:confused:
