Probably because of your settings. Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>System Tray (previously called Shutdown) & choose to shutdown immediately.

Try opening your task manager (Ctrl+ALT+Delete all at once) and end task from there...It could be a matter of LW not responding if the problem persists let us know...
