Can't Connect Mac - Help! 1. OS version? OS X 10.4.8 2. What firewalls you have? None known....? 3. How much ram? 256MB 4. Hard Disk space available? 42MB 5. Connection type? Airport (Cable/DSL) 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? No clue... 7. Where are you trying to connect from? House that is on a school campus 8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? LW 4.12.6 Java 1.5.0_06 9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)? Do not know...? 10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Safari can’t open the page “http://www3.limewire.com:6346/” because it could not connect to the server “www3.limewire.com”. 11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? other computers through a wireless router 12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. 1st try on this computer, not first time user on mac 13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? yes |
1. OSX Firewall settings for Tiger; not that you really need a firewall for mac. 5-6. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=52014 this is the vital step at my guess. As your port 6346 is blocked. You need to either enable UPnP (NAT-PMP) or forward a port. 13. Is due to the presence of an unconfigured firewall ... probably the airport being the issue. |
Umm, I tried those suggestions, but still have no connection... So, I don't know what's wrong. Could I use a proxy to connect to Limewire, so I can bypass the firewall here? And if so, how do I go about doing that? |
Ah ... school campus ... yes I did miss that point ... See the graph link here for typical school & school accommodation approaches nowadays: ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire & for proxies see this link A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire pages 1 - 3 which have links to alternative instructions. |
Wow, I'm hopeless. I tried about 20 different proxies, followed the instructions exactly and still NO success! I don't know what's wrong... |
At school, proxies are still no absolute guarantee to work. It depends upon what the school has set up to stop p2p programs from connecting to their network. How about a http proxy. There's various types of proxies & that's one of them. Also using an ip hider/masker 'might' help. |
