Believe it or not, your internet setup is exactly the same as the one I am going to install in my home a few weeks from now (albeit with different equipment). I'm going for the Thomson SpeedTouch 585(i)v6 modem/router with the 121g wireless USB client

This will allow me to keep my secure connection, i.e. my computer will be the one connected to the modem/router via an ethernet cable, and my two sons will use their own computers connecting to the modem/router via a secure WPA encrypted wireless radio signal.

The only thing I'd like to mention, and what my research has revealed, is that you will not be able to make any changes to the modem/router, e.g. port forwarding etc, from your laptop unless you have administrative access. Therefore, you will have to make the necessary configuration changes from the upstairs computer, the one physically connected to the modem, as that will have the required access rights.
