Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

ursula,

sorry about the multiple posts

this may sound stupid, but when I download the 3.6.15, what file do I download. I followed the link to the old downloads, and there were a bunch there. I tried to download the one I thought was valid for win, but maybe I messed up.

Default Removing and Re-Installing LimeWire

Don't sweat the multiple posts right now...
You've got other stuff to worry about first !!!

Anyway... click on this one

http://www3.limewire.com/download/3.6.15/

and when you get to the 'Downloads page'

select

LimeWireWin.exe 11-Nov-2003 16:17 4.8M

When the 'Download Box' opens, be sure to click on Save and NOT Open.
(You will need to select a suitable folder where you wish to 'Save' the file... Good idea to have a look first and see where you want to put it or, even 'create' a New Folder named "Program Installers" or something else equally catchy !!!)

...........................

Remember, it's OK to download the 3.6.15 version now, but BEFORE you try to install it, make certain that you have properly and completely Removed the other version you had/have installed.

To do this, click on 'Start' (down on the lower left of your Windows screen) and then click on 'Settings'...

Next, click on 'Control Panel'...

Then, click on the icon which says 'Add/Remove Programs'...

A 'terrifying' box will appear !!!
BE CAUTIOUS... GO SLOW !!!

Scroll down the display of programs until you find 'LimeWire'...
Click ONCE on 'LimeWire'...
This will make the 'LimeWire' line highlighted...
Now click on the button on the lower right of the Add/Remove Programs screen in order to 'Remove' the highlighted program... i.e. LimeWire in this case...

You will then see some 'UnInstall' screens and you will need to answer 'yes' when prompted...

After this is all finished, be sure to go back and look in your (probably) C:\Program Files\ folder to check that there is nothing remaining there that relates to LimeWire...
If there is anything, Delete it... Yes, you can even delete the main LimeWire Folder if you should find it...

Phew, huh ?

NOW, really important...

REBOOT
(Do NOT 'Restart'... Actually 'Shutdown' the machine and 'Start' it 'fresh'.
(This is necessary so that 'Registry values' can be properly changed.)

After you Restart, do NOT connect to the internet... Do NOT even connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP)...

Find the LimeWireWin.exe 'Install Program' that you Downloaded and click on it to make it Run...
Follow the basic install instructions...
Do NOT set it to 'start automatically' when you start your computer.

Don't even 'Run' it after you have installed it (If you have the choice.)

Now, guess what ?

Yupp...

REBOOT

Shutdown your machine and then start it again...
Same old thing... The 'registry' needs to be correctly updated.
(This is a habit that you should follow with 99.99% of ALL of the software that you install on your machine !)

Now, pray and start LimeWire !

If none of this helps, call 'Peerless' or 'trap_jaw4' !!!
(A little joke, sorry..)

By the way, it takes about one third less time to do all of this stuff than it does to write it down !!!

p.s.
Important - Try to be sure that no other programs are running while you do the actual installation of programs...
Another very important habit that far too many people ignore, only to have problems later...

Unhappy

Well, I tried. Twice even. Made sure there were no traces of any previous LW programs on the computer, and followed your instructions to the letter. Still no go. If I try to manually connect the little ball turns green for maybe a second or two, then goes back to red. *sigh...

Thumbs up OS 9.2.2

Also works for Mac OS 9.2.2 just have to find the Limewire preferences in the Preferences folder in the System folder. (I just did a search for Limewire and then clicked on each one until I found the one in the preferences folder) once you find it, drag it to the trash, then restart Limewire. You need to go through the set up again (takes just a moment) but Wahlah! Thanks!

Hi shoo.
There is a way to test for at least some connectivity: click on http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ If the page does NOT say "Your test page was a success!" you'll have a quick indication something IS blocking connections on the default port of 6346.

Ok, I tried clicking that link, and the page just sat still with the hourglass. Nothing came up. So, does this mean that my provider is blocking conectivity to LW, or what? Is there any other way to connect?

Someone who knows Windows will have to help (I'm on OSX), but that test told you that your computer couldn't make a connection through port 6346, the default gnutella port.

Where's the block? Whoever controls your access to the internet

1. Firewalls and other very valuable anti-virus software--how to set them up will vary depending on your OS and versions, so posting the specifics can catch the attention of others who have a similar setup.
2. Home Routers--they are a popular way to hook up home networks, and most have the very necessary built in blocks, which are not easy to configure. Post the specs if you use one, and again, someone might recognize the model and have some experience to share.

3. Try another port. Look for the links to other ports in Ursula's signature--they're in the Tips and Tricks Forum.

Beyond those three options the problem gets really messy, and ball is in the coders and business managers (who have used up most of the easier solutions) who put out your software and the network admins who provide the wiring and switches that make up the internet.

Here's a horribly simplified version of what else can be attempted for those who have given up on easy downloads and just are interested in the filesharing.

The wires (usually) run to upstream routers and other controls--run by network admins, usually the ISP or work/school people. There are businesses who sell p2p controls to networks, and their sales depend on convincing the ISPs that blocking p2p will solve many problems and save money. All you can do here is politely build up a relationship with these people, find out their policies, and try to get them to cooperate with your communication needs. After all, that's what they want to do, but there's a lot of FUD about the legitimacy of p2p. Once the wire is out of your home, the political problems become greater than the technical.

bottom line--support p2p developers who are the ones really trying to get you connected. Your network admins will be happy if you just browse the Web and do email, or pay them for downloading what they offer.

Cheers--sorry about the length, but this problem of connections gets me going.
