Default Connection problem

I am suddenly experiencing connecting problems (one bar and message saying "Limewire is attempting to connect ...). Firewall icon does show apparent firewall. This just started as of last 3 weeks, and I have made no changes to virus protection. (Disconnected firewall does not help.) Problem occurs in several locations, so it is apparently not related to the local ISP or access from my home. BTW, I have no problem connecting to Limewire from the Mac in my home. Have read several similar threads, but have found no solution yet. Any suggestions. Thanks. Pioneer3.

IBM laptop, Windows XP
512 ram
40 GB
Trend Micro PC-cillin (Windows firewall off)

System details - help us to help you Please.

Recently there's been a problem with people not providing enough details about their setup - despite being asked again & again.
So let's make it easy for everyone...the details that we need if we're going to be able to help with complex problems are:

Cut n paste Just these Questions, put your answers in bold text Thank You.

1. what OS version (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX, Vista) ?
2. What firewalls you have ?
3. How much ram ?
4. Hard Disk space available ?
5. Connection type (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) ?
6.Modem what brand name & model numbers ?
7.Router brand name & model numbers ?
8. Where are you trying to connect from (house, apartment complex, school, student accommodation, work, etc.) ?
9. What version,LimeWire & Java, are you using. Go to L/W's Help/About L/W, THIS show both LW & Java version.?
10. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider) ?
11. Do this test click here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ should say 'Your test worked!. What happens ?
12. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
13. Is this your 1st try at LW, or is this a new problem with an experienced user.?
14. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface ?
15. Have you given full permissions for LimeWire to pass through your Firewall ?
16. XP users, Please state XP firewall on or off.?
17. In Start & remove Programs, Is this update Installed, "Security Update for Windows XP (KB931261)" ?
If Windows Updates are not seen, Tick the box at top of page, (show updates)
18. Are you using Manual Port faward in LimeWire OR UPnP ?
You can check HERE, IN LimeWire Go, Tools/options/advanced/firewall Config

This information can be vital
For instance, some ISPs are known for blocking p2p/throttling bandwidth,
some connection devices are known for being unreliable in certain situations.

So please, help us to help you & provide as much info as you can.
If you're new to LW or new to computers & aren't sure how to answer some questions,
or don't know what an ISP or router is - just say so. Nobody's going to yell at you:wink:
Even if you can't answer all the questions in one go...don't worry. Do the best you can & we'll take it from there.

18. Are you using Manual Port faward in LimeWire OR UPnP ? UPnP. Based on your response to another person, I switched to MP and entered in 45000 there and on the listening port. No difference.
You can check HERE, IN LimeWire Go, Tools/options/advanced/firewall Config

Also remember that I am able to connect to LW 4.9 on a Mac, through the same ISP, router, modem, etc. with no problem. Since this is a recent problem (about a month), may be an update issue.

Thanks for your help.

Pioneer3 Hi
The java version you have installed has been a problem to many
roll back your java that should help things.

Now! Go to,
START/Set Program Access/Change or Remove Programs,
now completely remove all versions of java.
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.

Now! Use this Blue Link to get "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 12" Use the off line installer, NOT the (recommended) one, 4th one down.
Java SE Downloads - Previous Release - JDK 5
When Download is completed.
Disconnect from internet, close ALL apps n reinstall java.

If that don't fix things,
Try switching to Manual Port forward using port numbers between 45000 To 65000
Both Manual Port forward No, & listening port should be set at the same number
In LimeWire, GO to Tools/Options/Advanced/Firewall Config & use Manual Port forward.

Then Port forward your router,

Port Forwarding for the D Link DI 624
Follow this link it will open on the page you need to PortForward your router.
Use this blue link. & don't forget to create a static IP first, as instructed , & click apply after changing each setting.
PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

your servant,
Peace.

I too am having the same problem. I have tried the suggestions listed below with no effect. I checked the last known successful connection to Limewire; it was May 8. There were 2 "update" installs from Microsoft since that date - for me. I using the "restore" option from safe mode but could only go back to June 9th. I did try several dates just on principle, to no avail. In that time Java also updated. I tried the Java fix you suggested, and still nothing. I uninstalled limewire and Java. I removed everything Limewire form the pc and the registry and tried to reinstall both including a rolled back version of Java v. 1.4.2-14. So far nothing has worked. No real new information here, but I thought it might save some time and frustration for someone else.

An additional note, I tried to install Limewire on my Windows 2000 pc and am having the same problem. I thought maybe the Microsoft Updates might be different and that would be the issue. But nope. Not it.

Thank you for your responses. I was finally able to connect from a new location (although some trouble downloading a couple of audio files, but that is an issue for another time.) Suggests my problem is likely in the communications with my home DSL modem and or wireless router. Will update when I figure it out, for the benefit of others. BTW, I did not have to change Java or any other settings.
