Firewall? Please Help! I was connecting fine to limewire but for some reason now I can't. I shows there is a firewall blocking connection. I always had both the windows firewall and McAfee firewall up and it was never an issue, since limewire is logged as an exception. I tired updating to the most recent limewire and java versions but it didn't help. Any advice would be really appreciated. |
I've had the same issue and tried all those fixes, too. What is going on? |

Try this:- (you must show all hidden files) [1] Open windows explorer (windows XP SP2) select Tools à select Folder Options à select View à select Show hidden files and folders. [2] In windows explorer look for the Limewire Folder – go here: c:\documents and settings\username\applications data\LimeWire (or) c:\documents and settings\username\limewire [3] Ensure that limewire is completely off (check that it isn't in the system tray-bottom right-if it is click on it and select exit) now open the .limewire folder and look for and delete the gnutella.net file (see image below) If you don't find a gnutella.net file dont panic - go to para [4] and cont. http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/LW_g...1196869679.jpg [4] download a new version from (here) and save it to yr desktop [5] Drag the new gnutella.net file from your desktop into the limewire folder. [6] Close the LW Folder and start up Limewire NOTE: If you are using VISTA click on the link below (how to show hidden files in windows vista) -- also you will find the LimeWire folder here:- C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\LimeWire If this doesn't fix yr problem:- Go to Limewire links (below) click on (if LW will not connect) and go through these fixes -- if yr problem still remains after this click on (System details) fill in as much as you can and post here |
Skyliner - Your directions were perfect. I've been having the same connection problems everyone seems to be having with no luck to a fix. But your solution helped me, hopefully it will also help others too. Thank you so much!:super: |

not a problem - enjoy |
Hello, I have the same problem. There is a wall with the globe behind indicating the firewall is blocking a connection. We have never had this problem before and using Limewire for a long time. I tried your suggestion but still having the same problem. All the firewalls on my computer are disabled. Any others suggestions? Thanks in advance. |
Hi, Ok - forget my last post. Its fixed now - because I tried so many things to get it working - I reset everything back to 'default settings'. Now combined with the suggestion above (replace gnutella file). It works -- I 'm happy! Thanks. |
tried all that and still cannot connect anymore suggestions? |
Whoo-hoo! Downloading the new version of gnutella.net to my Desktop did the trick! I had been suffering with the same problem as everyone mentioned: LimeWire Pro 4.16.6 worked for quite awhile and then just seemed to quit. After copying the current version of gnutella.net, all is working well again. Thanks for the tip! :xeri_ok1ani: What's strange, however, is that on my laptop running LimeWire Pro 4.14.10 with same router/modem as my desktop, I don't have the problem at all. Computers: can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. |

(finally connected) and check yr LW settings -- otherwise click on (system details) and fill in as much as you can and post here |

thx helped alot:):xeri_ok1ani: |
I had disconnected all firewalls, including windows, CW, Lavasoft, spybot, etc, and still no connect. Finally, I followed with the notes here and even though the removal and reinstall of gnutella.net file did not appear to work, I then removed Tips and restarted. Boom, I'm on and now I can get back to work after 5 hrs. :xirokrotima: Thanks guys |
OK, I've done everything as suggested to connect to Limewire as suggested to rudedog however could not find the gnutella.net file so went to download via point 4 on your response. when going to download I could not save it to desktop and wondered what I am doing wrong. Could you please help and advise as I am a keen music lover and would love to get this working again. |
Gutnella file I'm not a Techie, but your download (if it is windows) should go to your desk top. Or you can search for the file in c: drive to locate it. Then cut and move it to Limewire file in Programs. Good luck. |

ThankYou Both For The Advice.. Got Right Up To The End, But Still Get The Same Message Reading "This is usually due to a firewall program blocking Limewire's access to the Internet or loopback connections on the local machine." :( Is There Anything Else I Can Do? |

1.) First, go into LW and click on 'tools' located on the top toolbar. Select 'options'. On the left, you'll see the option called 'sharing', hit that and click the checkbox for "folder is fully shared including all subfolders." Hit apply at the very bottom ALWAYS. 2.) Next, go to the 'speed' tab and select your speed: brodband or dial up. Hit apply at the very bottom. 3.) Go to the 'uploads' tab and make sure it's set at the middle (that long line that's towards the middle.) Hit apply at the bottom. 4.) Go to 'connections' and un-check the "connect on start-up" box. Hit apply. 5.) Hit the 'BitTorrent' tab and check-mark the "start automatically" box. Hit apply. 6.) Hit the 'player' tab and make sure the "use limewire media player" box is checked. Hit apply. 7.) Go to 'status bar' and check-mark every box except the last one. Hit apply. 8.) Hit the 'iTunes' tab and type in a shared name, such as " your name's limewire tunes." The buffer size should be at 2048. Hit apply. 9.) Go to 'view' and check-mark the box for "show notifications". Hit apply. 10.) Then go to 'autocompletion' and hit the check-box. Hit apply. 11.) Hit the 'searching' tab and then the 'Quality' tab below it and check-mark the "show all qualities". Hit apply. 12.) Go to 'speed' and check-mark "show all speeds". Hit apply. 13.) Go to 'filters' and hit 'keywords' and check-mark the "Ignore .vbs files" and "Ignore .wmv/.asf files." Hit apply. 14.) Go to 'advanced preferencing' and have the scale on 'always' - have the box above checked at "1". Hit apply. 15.) Hit the 'firewall config' tab and check-mark the "use UPnp" which is recommended. Hit apply. 16.) Go to 'proxy' and select "no proxy". Hit apply. 17.) Hit 'file associations' and check-mark both ".torrent files" and "magnet:links" below that, check-mark the middle button. Hit apply AND Ok. TIP: Keep all of the recommended options check-marked and ALWAYS make sure you click the apply button and when you're done click OK. Hope this helps |

Help please - I am stumped I am running XP, everything was fine for a long time, then Limewire just stopped connecting. I have removed Macafee firewall, disabled WinXP firewall, updated to newest gnutella.net file, started, stopped, removed connect and tips on startup, and on and on. I even bought and installed LW Pro! It still can't connect. I see the brick wall over the globe, even though I have removed the Macafee firewall, and completely disabled WinXP firewall, yet the brick wall still shows. Any suggestions? Thanks so much! -Cutsforth |
