Question Connection Problem

I've spent about 3 hours bashing my head trying to figure out where things are going wrong. I went through the 'sticky' threads and followed all the directions and as of yet nothing works. Of course, I'm getting the whole constantly in the connecting process, but never actually getting anywhere and it's giving me the 'Firewall detected' icon, even though my firewall is completely off. When I tried FrostWire it kept popping up with a 'cannot detect internet connection - check firewall' message, with my firewall still off. I've restarted several times.

So, here goes -

1. OS version? Windows Vista and I am admin user, actually... I'm the only user on this account
2. What firewalls you have? Windows Firewall
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available? 68.6 GB
5. Connection type? cable?
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from? apartment complex
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) LW 4.18 and Java 6 Update 10
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Cox
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? IE cannot display page
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? No
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user? 1st try - just downloaded LW a few hours ago, been working at it ever since
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Yep
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled?
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Windows Defender, Symantec Anti-virus and several anti-spyware programs
16. What country are you living in? USA

Any suggestions?

Thank you, but I think I am supposed to have a router for that. Sorry, I never could remember the lingo, but I just have one of those oversized phone cords that go from the wall to my computer and I guess I just connect to the network my apartment provides. Also, I don't think it's the network or my ISP that is causing the problems - my room mate has LimeWire and it works just fine.

In your post #1--- (system details) --- para 10 -- Listening Port : The Gnutella Network uses port 6346 by default
your port 6346 is blocked and more than likely by your ISP -- check this link out (ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire) also found this by googling your ISP --- see this link for further info (Cox confirms P2P throttling)

Ah... and let me guess - That means theres no hope for me and my new LimeWire. So, it seems to be a random blocking process on certain computers - would it be possible to have my ISP unblock that port.. or do they tend to frown on that?

I'm not sure whether your ISP blocks P2P at peak times only or what -- try connecting at a non peak time --- you will have to check with them -- google your ISP and have a read -- let us know how you get on

I forgot to mention this link -- it has worked for some people with a Blocked ISP (Fix for blocked ISP's) give it a try. This is only a temp. fix though -- the only permanent way to fix the problem is to change your ISP to one that doesn't block P2P

Default There is hope, try this

Follow these 3 easy steps:

1. Uninstall limewire
2. Delete folder C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data
3. Reinstall limewire, this will definately work for you guys.

The trick is deleting the Application Data folder. If you cant find it, do a seach for limewire on your computer. Once it shows the files and folders, delete the application data folder.

Delete the ENTIRE Application Data folder, or just the Limewire folder within it?
