It's a really bad idea to not have any firewall. try downloading and installing this one Free Firewall Software Download by Comodo You can choose what to install from the package. If you already have other antivirus software, then just install the firewall. |

Connection Problems I have to say Limewire can really confuse me. I followed many instructions on this forum while my LW did not connect which took me about 30 minutes then all of a sudden after sitting for about another 10 minutes while I researched opening up a port or two on my router I connected with a turbo charged connection and have been downloading fine ever since. Now I am almost afraid to shut my computer off in fear of it not reconnecting. I am still operating with Windows Xp (the only real operating system) and an older version of LW. 4.4 Pro This has happened to me a few times before and would like it to stop. Any ideas? :wai: |

Hi playerstck, First of all, have you tried the fixes within this thread (click on link): If LW Will Not Connect Sometimes port forwarding isn't necessary... have you used LW in the past? Have you recently updated/upgraded LW? Sometimes, things like deleting LW's preferences folder or deleting/replacing gnutella.net file can do the trick;) Does your router support UPnP? If it does, have you tried enabling that within your router & using the UPnP option within LW (LW 4 tools > options > firewalls > check the 'use UPnP' button > Apply > ok>) (LW 5 tools > options > advanced > super really advanced > Firewall > tick the 'use UPnP' box > ok)? Which instructions are you using for port forwarding? Are you using these ones?: Port Forwarding for the Actiontec MI-424-WR I don't have an Actiontec, but port forwarding's pretty similar for different routers... I can't see anywhere to enter a *domain name, in those instructions:confused: Once you get to the Port forwarding > Add > Add Server Ports, you need to add ports for TCP. The destination port number that you use will be the same as LW's listening port. Then add another port for UDP. The destination port will be the same as LW's listening port. Make sure that the port in the 'manual port forward' box in LW is the same as the port you've forwarded within your router setup... if it's not the same, port forwarding won't work. Then when you come to the 'specify address' part - enter the static IP address that you set up earlier. Have you set up a static IP address first? You'll need to do that before you can set up port forwarding. Here's the link: PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall Late edit - Sorry, I was cooking dinner & forgot about the forum! *If you mean Domain Name Server (DNS) numbers then you'll find those when you go through the steps for setting up a static IP. There are normally 2 - a primary & secondary DNS number. Maybe that's what you mean when you mentioned local domain ?? Otherwise - sorry but I don't know what you mean. |
1. First thing you do before you begin the port forward process is set up a Static ip. How to set up a static IP address on a Vista (click on link). If you have two computers then each computer will need to have a separate different ip address & 'if' port forwarding both, each will need a different port forwarded. A separate port forward rule for each computer! :) Domain name is usually that of your ISP. Check with your ISP which exact name you should use. This is usually optional to add in. * Edit: oops it's not a name, I was confused with search domain when you mentioned domain name. It's a number. And yes it's best to choose the one your local ISP uses. No number here might make it difficult for your internet to connect or make it unreliable/slow at times. 2. Instructions for version 2 of your router Port Forwarding for the Actiontec MI-424-WRv2 Which port to use? Whilst port 6346 is the default gnutella port. Any port between 49152 - 65535 can be used. Make sure the connection & listening ports are the same & same as the port number you put into the router's port forward rule. Also use both TCP & UDP protocol combined, else do a separate rule for each which is even better. Remember the ports used for each computer must be different. For ip addresses, say for example your router address is 192.168.1.1, then each computer might have a static address of 192.168.1.3, 192.168.1.4, etc. lol looks like Birdy did come back. :p |
