Limewire says firewall is blocking but its not.

Hi,
Thanks so much for any help. MY ISP provider is Verizon DSL im running Windows XP. I'm running limewires version 410.5 pro. Java Version 1.50 11 as I just returned to the older version after reading some of the sticky threads.

I have been using limewire often for the past week as I was setting up a new play list and all was working fine. Now today I went to use it and it says its being blocked by a firewall and the firewall icon is present.. I use AVG as far as an anti virus program and I do not have windows firewall marked as being active.

I haven't installed anything different or made any changes since yesterday when I was using Limewire so I dont know what could have changed.

As I said I tried installing an older version of Java, I changed the port #. I have rebooted the computer and limewire several times but still No luck.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jill,

Have you been through the fixes here? If LW Will Not Connect
First thing I'd suggest is deleting LW's preferences folder. Next thing to try would be replacing the gnutella.net file:) Otherwise, try the other fixes there & if nothing helps, please post back with all of your system details (the help thread has info about which details we need).

Your version of LW's really old, you may find some problems using that one. Do you have that Pro installer saved? If you do, try updating to the latest free LW & see whether that's any better: Lime Wire » Download LimeWire
*If you don't have your Pro 4.10.5 installer saved, updating to the latest free version will remove your Pro & you won't be able to get it back!!!*

My limewire says connecting to network and next to that it says it detectx a firewall. I have shutdown limewire, deleted it completely from my computer, added it back, checked my firewall has limewire set as an exception to allow it through and I still cannot get it to connect.... Any help there?

Windows Vista
Windows firewall
Ram 4.5
Dont know where to find hard disc info :(
cable connection
motorola sb5101 modem and belkin f5d7234-4 router
connecting from house
Version 4.18.8
ISP is time warner cable
My test worked!!
Only computer on setup
New problem, I actually had some songs downloaded already and one day it just would not connect any longer, I deleted it from the computer twice and readded it. Still having connection problem.
I do see a brick wall, I went into my firewall and it says to allow limewire as an exception
port forwarding (6500)
Not sure about security, I know I have the following on my computer: CCleaner?Norton security scan, and symantec client security
Im in the USA
It is a laptop I am using, It was working at my previous address, I did just move last week but it had stopped working before I moved. So I was using an at&t laptop connect card at the time and have since switched to the roadrunner connection which is still not allowing connection... Hope all this helps!

I can't find any port forwarding info (or much info at all) about your router. The Belkin site's no help as the user guide & quick start manuals never load
So I can't even find out whether it has a firewall (most routers do) or supports UPnP. Does your manual tell you anything about that??

Which version of Java are you using (in LW Help > About LW will show you)?

Try removing any rules for LW from within Vista's firewall. Then restart your computer & add new rules.

Go to LW's tools > options > advanced > firewall. Change LW's listening port from 6500 to 65000 > apply > ok.

Do you just have the 'manual port forwarding' ticked within LW's tools > options > advanced > firewall or do you actually have a port forwarded within your router's setup (by logging into your router & changing settings)?

Did you have any problems finding the preferences folder? After you deleted the prefs folder, did you go through LW's setup wizard all over again?

Go & find your gnutella.net file. Hover your cursor over the file - how big is it?

Reporting Back

Hi Birdy,
I wanted to thank you for your reply and let you know what finally worked for me.

I did all that was suggested including upgrading my version of Limewire, changing the port #'s replacing the gnutella.net file etc etc. Nothing was making a bit of difference.

What I finally did was go back to the windows firewall settings I did have it set to off so I went under advanced settings. Listed there were 3 box's that were checked, One for broadband, local area, and the Internet. I figured well I'm not using the firewall so lets see what happens if I unchecked these box's. The moment I did Limewire connected. I have restarted LW 4 times since and even though the firewall icon is still showing in LW its connecting just fine. "Knocking on wood"
