LW4 Pro

I purchased this back in 2004-2005. Its worked great until about 6 months ago. Suddenly stopped connecting. LW shows an error that says I don't have an internet connection or a firewall is blocking it. The only active firewall is in my router and I've done what the sticky says to do to allow LW to connect.I've tried all the connection solutions in the sticky area except for downloading a fresh version. My step-daughter brought her laptop with her several weeks ago and she couldn't connect either, but it connects when she is at home.
My ISP has changed hands several times since then, therefore my email address has changed also. I don't remember which one I had at the time of the order and I don't have the original email either. Is there any other way to find my account so I can redownload a fresh copy?

Back in 2004/5, buying Pro entitled you to free updates for 6 months after purchase. So your Pro's well & truly out of date. Sorry, but you'd need to buy Pro again if you want to download a Pro installer. Unless you have your Pro installer saved, installing a basic version would mean that you'd lose your Pro completely:(

If you originally bought Pro from a scam site offering some 'lifetime membership' then your email address would never have been in the official database.

Is this the connection problems sticky that you've been looking at? If LW 4 Will Not Connect

Did you replace the gnutella.net file? Were there any fixes that you had trouble with? We need your system details;)

I bought it directly from the limewire website. I could care less about updates, it was working fine until several months ago. My email address was in the database at one point because I had to redownload it once already, but that was a couple years ago.
Update....found my installer. Reinstalled and it still won't connect. I think my ISP is blocking.

I only gave you info about Pro updates because you asked about downloading a fresh copy of Pro. LW don't keep old installers for download (apart from the last LW 4.18.8) & so if you wanted a Pro installer, you'd need to have current benefits to download.

AFAIK Comcast aren't blocking p2p any more - use Google to search for Comcast blocking p2p & you'll find info about the lawsuit etc. And if your test worked then it indicates that LW's default port isn't being blocked.

But regardless of that - did you try any different listening ports in the recommended range? Does every computer on your LAN use a different listening port for LW? If each computer is using LW then they'll need to have different listening ports. And if port forwarding's in place then they'll each need their own static IP address & port forwarding rules within the router setup.

After you deleted LW's preferences folder, did you have to go through the setup wizard again? Did you have any problems with replacing the gnutella.net file?

Before you set up port forwarding, did you set up a static IP address? PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

And did you use these instructions for port forwarding?: Port Forwarding for the Belkin F5D9230-4

well.....I've tried everything I can think of and everything in the "LW4 won't connect" sticky and I still can't connect. Will buying the latest version of Pro get me better support?

Lord of the Rings March 27th, 2009 01:25 PM

Well if they give better advice, it's your money. :) They won't give you much more advice than this probably User Cant Connect - LimeWire

I do know Belkin devices generally need to be port forwarded. And the usual problem with setting up port forwarding is the very first step (this is where most people make mistakes). If that's not done correctly then the entire process needs to be removed & repeated from scratch. That first step is setting up a static ip address. You will most likely need to reboot the computer after port forwarding. Setting up a static ip address for Windows XP. (BTW the static ip address should normally be a similar number to the router's address. But instead of eg: 192.168.2.1 which the router uses .. the static ip address should be something like 192.168.2.5 and 192.168.2.6 for next computer on network, etc.)

Also ensure you do NOT have more than one software firewall! All Windows from XP onward have a software firewall. Find the settings for it in the Control panels. Setting up an exception for LimeWire in your software firewall (click in link)

BTW sometimes one version of LW does not run well on particular set ups. So it 'might' be worth trying a different version. Try the 2nd link (Older LW Installers) in this link for example: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...lw-4-18-a.html)

Thanks, but I've tried all of that stuff. Its been working great with the same router, same computer, same operating system for several years and without port forwarding setup.

Lord of the Rings March 27th, 2009 03:49 PM

cool .. good to hear it works fine :)

If not, delete the LW prefs folder .. which is often the culprit. Other techniques are removing all incomplete files.

I would warn however, LW 4.9 is highly outdated. It will not connect to versions higher than 4.14. And it's connection file .. gnutella.net file is most likely out of date. BTW I never did like LW 4.9 .. 4.8 or 4.12 were much better. But as I've said many times, one version suits one system better than others. :)

txturbo March 27th, 2009 05:28 PM

I think you misunderstood. Its not working right now, but it did work for several years with the same hardware that I have now. Nothing has changed except that it suddenly won't connect anymore.

Lord of the Rings March 28th, 2009 06:02 AM

These may or may not help (a) Problems with the search, __ (b) Hostiles List. I presume you replaced the gnutella.net file whilst LW was closed? And/or removing old LW prefs folder.

txturbo March 29th, 2009 07:43 AM

Update....I purchased LW5 Pro and installed on my HP Vista 64 laptop. I connected to the neighbors wireless network and LW connected and works great. Later today I'm going to reconnect to my network that the desktops are connected to and see if LW on the laptop can connect.
Update.....already having problems. I'm trying to get to "options" on the "tool" menu and it just flashes for a split second.

Lord of the Rings March 29th, 2009 12:16 PM

YOu need to wait for LW 5 to be 'totally' loaded before you can access options. This means totally loaded incomplete files & shared files. This can take several minutes if there are many. ;) Be patient. :)

txturbo March 29th, 2009 01:03 PM

there aren't many at all, this started only a couple of hours after I installed it. I was able to access everything in the tools menu the first couple of times without waiting. Now after only downloading 6 MP3s I have to wait? Doesn't seem right.

Lord of the Rings March 29th, 2009 02:01 PM

See if this helps; close LW, delete the LW prefs folder: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...tml#post183932 but LW must be closed at that time. Also before you do this, make a note of any important settings, also remember which location your download folder is. ;)

txturbo March 29th, 2009 03:46 PM

wow....LW5 has a whole new set of problems. I waited for 2-1/2 hours and still can't open "options" in the "tools" menu. Also, everytime I restart LW it says my save folder is no longer valid and I have to choose it again before LW will open. Then I tried to uninstall it and when I choose uninstall it just opens LW.
I just deleted the LW preferences folder and now I can't keep the damn program closed. I close it and it reopens itself every 5 seconds. I've had viruses that aren't this annoying. Who do I talk to to get a refund.
I just did a system restore to get rid of it.

Lord of the Rings March 29th, 2009 07:05 PM

OUCH! .. well it certainly should not be doing that. And it does sound like a virus of some nature if it is re-opening continually.
You could always revert back to LW 4.18.8 Pro, see last sentence & 2nd attachment of this post: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...lw-4-18-a.html. There is a chance the present LW 5 version just is not going to work well on your machine. A reasonable % of people have downgraded back to LW 4 either because LW 5 did not behave well or because they didn't like it.

Particular LW versions work differently on different computer set ups. So perhaps waiting for the next LW release might be wise. :)

txturbo March 31st, 2009 09:32 AM

Ok....explain this to me. I've removed LW5 Pro from the Vista64 laptop and removed 4.9 Pro from one of the XP desktops and installed the free basic version 4.18 on both of them and they both work without any problems. Am I correct in assuming I only get these problems if I pay for them? What is different about how the PRO version and how the basic version connect?

Lord of the Rings March 31st, 2009 09:56 AM

Did you come here to 'flame'? I have no idea. I am not a LW programmer. We are volunteers on this forum. Nobody who helps on this forum works for LW.

Pro connects to two extra ultrapeers. It also has some small improvements in the search engine. That's all I know. :)

But if I didn't mention it earlier, some versions of LW work better on some people's set up compared to others. That has always been a common thread since I've been helping on these forums. ;)

If you still have Pro support, send them an email. :) They might know why. ;)

If you still have Pro, why not try installing LW 4.18 pro on them if 4.18 basic runs fine. Perhaps the present LW 5 just is not going to run properly on your machine.

txturbo March 31st, 2009 12:03 PM

no...I didn't come here for that. I came here because I paid for a program that is suppose to work. If it doesn't work, I should get a refund.I kinda take it personal when someone rips me off. But, thanks for your help. I have already sent an email to the support people. And you would think if a company sets up a support forum, they would have support people in here answering questions about problems with thier software and not expect other people to do thier job for free.

Lord of the Rings March 31st, 2009 11:52 PM

LimeWire did not set up this forum. :) This forum was running before LW even existed. ;) LW is just one of many gnutella programs that has been or is represented at these forums. They do have their own beta forums now.

Did you try replacing the LW 4.18 basic with LW 4.18 Pro?
You're not the only person who has had major problems with LW 5. Some others also cannot run it on their systems.
Also, I was not happy they released LW 5 so early when it was still missing many of LW 4's tools & still had several bugs. And more are being found. ;)
