"can't move to library"?

Why do i get the message "can't move to library" when i try to download an mpg file? what does that mean?

I have the same problem.

Win98, latest version, a variety of songs.

What could it be?

I get that message. I think I get itt when I try to download a file with a slash in the name.

This problem has been discussed quite a bit in prior threads... it's been traced to file names that contain these characters:

\ / : * ? " | < >

These are "illegal characters" in Windows. LimeWire won't download these files on any platform.

If the files you are trying to download contain any of these characters you'll get the 'cannot move to library error'.

This seems to be the most common reason for the error. There are others which you can find if you do a search through the forum.

Special Characters

Many OSes reject special characters in filenames.

In Mac, if you try to put special characters in filenames it will either warn you or change the special character to "-".

Perhaps Limewire programmers should evaluate the filename before Limewire attempts to download the file and automatically replace the special characters with "-" ...

Same old story

Been offline since August and see that little has changed with this 'cannot move to library' problem. I still think the problem lies elsewhere than simply with illegal characters or too lengthy filenames. I've just started up version 2.3.4 and it's working OK; much later versions don't.

btw, I've moved to Rome and would appreciate recommended ISPs here.

Why not add these illegal characters to the filters? Then you wouldn't encounter this problem. Some file names are so long that you can't see these illegal characters unless you have a very wide screen.

problem without special characters

I gust tried to download a file with the name of

Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 6.0 with keymaker.zip

this filename had none of the special characters listed previously.

When I went to the incomplete directory and double clicked on the file and tried to launch it WinZIP complained that the archive was corrupt.

So, is the archive corrupt because Limewire could not move it, or is the reason the Limewire could not move it because it was corrupt?

Thanks,
Jesse Tutterrow

That is a question for the programmers.
I would assume that LimeWire couldn't move it b/c the file is corrupt. It seems that one of the latest inhancements to the program is file verification..
After adding all the illegal characters to my filter exceptions I am still encountering files that cannot be moved to the library. I don't believe that illegal characters are the problem after all. I'm thinking it probably has to do with LimeWire's file verification routines.

Back to square one. I'm going to try to use an earlier version of LimeWire to see if this is true.
