Cool A Totally Unproven Theory On LimeWire

I hope the suggestions work for you. For me, everything sucked on LimeWire until I got my firewall and router properly configured and since then, it has been smooth sailing. The only mishap I have had is when somewhere along the line LimeWire changed the file it saves stuff to, and it has persistently refused to allow me to change it back. That is ok, I just made some adjustments and I really don't care where it saves my stuff as long as I can find it and share it.

My theory on LimeWire, and on p2p software in general is this: you can tweak stuff and try to fix problems, and sometimes it works but I think the bottom line is very often that either your computer "likes" LimeWire or it does not. Maybe a team of full time geeks could explain the hows and whys (or then again, maybe not) but LimeWire, or some versions of LimeWire simply will not work for some people no matter what fixes they try. Some of the longtime users here may try to make it sound as if having persistent problems means you don't know what you are doing, but I don't buy that. LimeWire, like all p2p is essentially experimental software "running the (lousy) Gnutella network".

My own cursed software was Ares. Ares did a fabulous job of downloading music, and it is ad/spyware free (they don't charge for that neat feature, by the way). The trouble was, in spite of very carefully and properly configured share settings, suddenly and without warning Ares decided to share my entire hard drive. Oops! I found out what was going on before any serious damage occurred (in about 5 minutes!) but the program should not have done that. So what was the glitch? Who knows. Again, may geeks would tell you I had to be doing something wrong. Sorry, I checked and rechecked those share settings. Just another chapter in the experiment that is p2p. Use at your own risk, and good luck!
