Search Cable/DSL speeds ONLY option?

Kinda new at this but extremely frustrated at the "corrupt file" problem.

So how can I set my search to NOT include "T3 or higher"? I've already set my search option to "show all speeds". But ALL the results are "T3 or higher" and not one "Cable/DSL" in sight.

Thanks.

I think a lot of people are missing the point here.

There are no files stored at this site or LW's site. The files you downld are mostly from people like you & me. I say mostly b/c obviously the RIAA/Music Industry & possibly the Movie industry are loading up servers with corrupt files to deliberately combat the sharing of copyright material. For music it seems T3 servers & video T1 servers.

Exactly!!! And who would do that!

Whichever way you look at it, it doesn't seem like the people who collect the $$$ are putting much effort into this at all. Granted, I have seen a big improvement in my search quality by trying out some of the suggestions made by some of you guys. But that's not the point. The moderators here are so used to washing their hands of problems and practicing blind faith in their beloved little program, they're now doing it without thinking.
It has nothing to do with the program! It's the source of the file! If I deliberately put a corrupt file up for sharing, then how is it LW's or the program's fault? And apparently yes, LW is working bit by bit at trying to combat these issues. For a start, you can use Bitzi Web-Lookup for movies & other things: Right-click (Control-click for mac) on the file & choose

Apparently 'some' corrupt files can be repaired. A couple of people have suggested fixes to those so called corrupt files. There's apparently at least 2 utility apps out there that can fix many. I don't know about all. See these: 1. video-fixer & 2. MP3RepairTool Both utilties can repair audio files.

Corrupt music & movie issues are best tested by previewing the files whilst they're still downloading.

For Bitzi Web lookup Right-click on the search result to find out reports about that particular file. (Mac users Control-click for same result!)

Lord of the Rings February 16th, 2005 03:53 AM

Another point I forgot to mention is that LW does have a corruption detection process. If all the bits, bytes & nibbles don't match with the original then it will attempt to downld the last part again. It may fail if the original is corrupt or there's continual interference in transmissions, or the original file has changed.

LW cannot detect corrupt movies & music if the file is complete & 'appears' to be normal. At this point that's the responsibility of the user to detect anything wrong with the file by previewing it & using Bitzi. A more experienced forum member or programmer will be able to give a better & more accurate description.

Bitzi

I absolutely love Bitzi but......it no longer works. I updated to 4.4.5 and can no longer access Bitzi. Any ideas why?

limewire_guy February 19th, 2005 05:28 PM

Hey Guys,

As a solution in the options menu under Filters > Hosts put just type in what most of the IP addresses are that you are block like this: 33.*.*.* and it will remove all the results from that. I've had to block 33 and 66 and it removes ALL T3 connections!

Lord of the Rings February 19th, 2005 11:43 PM

This concept has been thought of before but not all T3 users are bad. eg: There's several T3 users that are members & mods of the forum. And they may be acting as Ultrapeers to help others like yourself connect to the G network. So keep that in mind.

Fused March 26th, 2005 11:32 AM

Is there any way to block based on the vendor/agent string?

All of the corrupt files I seem to get are listed as "Gnucleus 2.0.1.0 (GnucDNA 1.0.2.6)", afaik Gnucleus is at a higher version than this, 2.0.8.0 or something.

I've noticed 3 things with corrupt files:
1) "T3" conection
2) same file size is listed as almost every bitrate from 128-320
3) Gnucleus 2.0.1.0 vendor string

Help needed downloading from uncorrupted files

Hi, I'm both a newbie at Limewire as well as participating in message boards, but after having read through many of the discussions looking for a solution to my problem, I still find myself with questions that need answers...

I get the whole T3 thing which of course sucks in the first place, but my problem is that after finding that out and then starting to look for different sources such as cable or modem users as alternatives when wanting to download a "new" or "popular" file I find myself with a whole new set of problems...

Here is the thing; When I find an alternative source through changing my ways of searching they usually are single sources, (no number of sources attached to it), but when trying to download such a file, what usually happens is that Limewire tells me I need more sources... So I push the find-more-sources button, over and over... but after a while the message "file could not be downloaded" almost always comes up... How do you download a file from a single source that ought to have like tons of sources considering how so many users like me must be searching for these rare files when the alternative always are these tons of corrupted T3 files?
I totally don't care if it takes time to download from a modem for instance, but what is the purpose of file sharing when a file never seems to be able to be downloaded unless there already are loads of sources behind it? I mean every file must at one time have been the first?

I don't know, or maybe I'm just a dumb newbie, but there seems to me that if one is to get around the corrupted T3 files people should be able to download from the ones that aren't?

I'm greatful for any help or insight into this problem as you out there can share...

Answer to those corrupted files ;)

hey guys, i had that problem where all the files you download are corrupted. i actually ahd the problem twice (i dont remember how i fixed it the first time... :( ) anyways, all you have to do is NOT TO DOWNLOAD from T3 users. i am not sure how to filter those hosts out, but if you download from modem or cable/dsl, your download should be fine.

i read in a previous thread that if you blocked hosts 33.*.*.* and 66.*.*.* T3 connections would be blocked... i dont know why but it doesnt work with me...

But you'll have greater chances of not getting corrupt files if you choose modem, cable/dsl, or T1. Sure modem are a bit slower but there's many more of them & they're reliable files in general.
I'm jumping in in the middle of a several-months-old thread, sorry. Also the thread is so long I got tired of going through it, so sorry if I'm repeating other folks.

I have the same corrupt files problem, especially on new popular songs that have hundreds of files available, so I believe the theory of the industry flooding us w/ corrupt files. I've noticed the T3 thing (but I agree there are still some good T3 files out there). I've come up with two ways to tell which files to avoid: 1. Lord of the Rings' bitrate anomaly. 2. If you hover your pointer over the individual file in your Search window (at least in my old ver of Limewire on Mac OS 9) until you get a popup graphic of the file's mp3 tags, the corrupt files are always missing the time "length".

38.117.*.*

I didn't find I needed to block the 68.*.*.* hosts, but since all this must depend on what you search for perhaps it is needed.

Hey, thanks!!! That has worked terrifically for me. I know I'm probably blocking "good" T3 sources, but so be it; I get pretty much only cable/dsl sources populating my search window. A bit slower DL speed, but better than the endless "corrupt" file messages. Thanks again!!

How to determine legit T3 connections

To determine a real T3 connection, right click on the file you want to download and hit browse host. If it is a corrupt file, the result will say Error: could not browse host. In my experience, only hosts with this error message provide corrupt files. Sometimes, files with search results will be corrupt,(but the files withing the browse host results are legit for some reason!) but a host with the error message always seems to be providing corrupt files.

corrupted files

I keep getting corrupted files that sound like the multi-host downloading is splicing together when played in preview if they will preview at all

guestblahblahblah June 11th, 2005 06:28 AM

dont know why it worked but......

I searched for 2 weeks for a track and downloaded every version i got thru the search and every single one was corrupt and then I found a way round it.

Instead of searching for artist and track I just searched for the artist and then selected the track from the search results....got the track no problem and I have done this ever since and not had another single corrupt track.

Like I say, I've got no idea WHY it would work, but it did for me.... maybe worth a try?

corrupt files

I tried what guestblahblahblah said and it worked!!! I have been trying to get music for weeks now and it all seems to be corrupt even the older music so that wasnt it. and finally this worked I just put in the artist without the song title. I did get one or towo corrupt still but mostly I got the song. Great Idea!I thank you sooooo much for figuring this out.

maggot ass July 17th, 2005 02:12 PM

well guys im having the same prob.

heres what i come up with. last night i downloaded 2 songs no prob. today i tried and cant get anything but corrupt files.

now i have a natted connection but it always worked fine. i pay extra for a static ip. so i can get on with 2 different ways. i can choose static or the tower ip(everyone on the tower shows the same ip). when i use the tower ip now i get corrupt files now, but when i switch to my static ip i can get any file i want with no corrution. is it possible for my isp to be causing the corrupt files?
i cant even really get connect to anyone unless i use my staic ip.

We can all manually block the hosts which we believe are distributing fake, corrupt and spoof material.

I've started a new thread to collect that "Block host" information.

LISTEN TO ME

Obviously, the RIAA or a group of Anti-Piracy Activists have began sharing a massive number of FAKE songs. I don't believe that it has much to do with the T3 theory, but it may be connnected. This same thing has happened to the WinMX file sharing network. The users who share the fake songs have a number following their account name, then and underscore, and another number. Try browsing the hosts on LimeWire, they usually share an unusually large number of files (Over 4000) I would suggest doing what guestblahblah suggested: search for the name of the artist and then pick out the song from the search results. This seems to help a little, but not much.

HangUnder September 27th, 2005 01:18 AM

YOU do this and THEY do that

Folks.. it is the RIAA. I just want to enlighten you all to this. The great folks with know how that are using WinMX are working on workarounds. They've created add-on programs for MX that automatically take out the bogus files... LineWire users seem to be a little behind the times. Now don't go getting all mad and start flamming; the latest news for MX aint roses either. The RIAA is getting to the source of P2P creators and cutting deals to allow them to take money from users instead of taking the creators into courts. Pleaz, don't start with the p2p isn't just for illegal use crap; you are old enough to be using p2p then you are old enough to know MONEY TALKS [bottom line]. The RIAA can get more money busting billions of users [a term also used when talking about drugs] than hitting the limited numer of p2p head corps with one time fines.
I said the news for MX aint all roses either... and here's why. Users have developed ways to remove the bogus files from the library index in MX so they won't return the bogus files in the search results automatically, but now their users are finding themselves unable to connect at all. This, like the 'war on drugs' will be a never ending thing. "You do this ..." as a workaround "and they do that..." to try and stop it. You'd think it would end and one side or the other would win, but that's not going to happen. Again, just take a look about 20 years back and you'll see the people on the wrong side of the laws thought the same thing about the 'war on drugs'. It goes on. One side thinks 'they'll run out of money to fight all of us' and the other side thinks 'the cost will evenutally run so high that fewer people will be able to afford creating p2p programs'. All the RIAA has to do to really push this stalemate is get the fines raised in the courts for "users" and they have the 'war on durgs' as a model of just how to do it too with the heads of states/nations backing up the idea and showing them how to do it, after all they're gaining money for themselves out of it too.
I've limited this to just the IRAA but let's be honest, it's not just them. Many industries are comming together and doing the same thing or at least contributing money to the efforts from the film/movie industry to book publishing companies. So, the best anyone is going to find is to just sit back and wait this out. All p2p apps are going through this. Get fed up with this one and go to another one and in 6 months go to another one and just keep repeating the whole thing and then get mad at the framents on your hard drive and post your anger in different fourms for a wide range of all different sorts of programs, etc. until you finally have a heartattack from rage and die. Just sit back and relax a little while. One p2p creator will find a temp patch to the problem and things will flow smooth again until the next monkey wrench gets thrown into the works by those making money to stop it.
By the way... "let's just eliminate the fastest connections" idea for Limeware is NOT the answer to this latest problem. Be glad you now that most of your problems are comming from those connections so you "the user" can work around it to a very SMALL degree. You limit LimeWire to not get the fast connections what do you think the FIRST thing the RIAA and the others will do? That's right; they'll ruin all the other connection speeds as well. Again, "you do this... they do that...". Fourms like this, while they help the user with info, they also load those trying to stop it all with what workarounds they might have to contend with next.

I was installing limewire 5.5.8 when it stopped. The following was issued "installation is corrupt download again". I had this problem also from previous versions except 5.2.
