I've been unable to play the songs I've been downloading for the past couple of days. When I double click on them nothing happens. It only brings me back to Limewire. What can the problem be?

You don't have an mp3 player. Limewire is not capable of playing mp3's like napster could. You need to download Winamp (http://www.winamp.com/) or some other player associated with the types of files you are downloading (winzip for zip files, media player for mpeg's, etc...) as Lmewire is not capable of executing these.
