windows xp crashing

Can anyone explain this problem...

When I am downloading music, peridically Limewire (the connection speed and time remaining) seem to halt.

When this occurs, my pc then reboots itself and takes ages to begin again.

When I use other programs (Winmx and Kazaa Lite), these never cause my pc to crash.

Admittedly, Limewire is superb and when it does work it is great.

BUT this crashing the pc is doing my head in.

any help?

1. How much ram do you have?

2. Hard Disk space available?
3. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
4. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
5. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
6. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...)
7. Do you use the Resume button to continue all your incomplete files?

512 ram
HDD 80gb main, 120gb secondary
connection type is Webstar 100/200 Blueyonder cable for my 1mb broadband.

Home connection

Linewire is the latest Pro version
java is this : Java(TM) 2 Platform Standard Edition
Runtime Environment
Version 5.0

I do use the resume button.

I do not think anything is wrong with my pc (I happen to use an identical one in my work), since other P2P applications never fail.

Need any further info?

Using the resume function on many files simulaneously can have side fx. It can use up all of LW's resources as well as your computers & may even affect your connection. My advice is to let LW settle before doing anything. After opening, leave it for half an hour or so, then do your searching, or if you wish, choose a few files to resume. But don't select all to resume at the same time.

Some hints: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. The latter one I've been thinking about re-writing for some time. That's just for playing it safe. eg- I show all speeds & qualities.

So i suppose my pc is adequate enough to use the fast limewire ?

I did not think anything was wrong.

If it's crashing then something's wrong. You can try to reduce load by reducing the no. of incomplete files. You can set both uplds & downlds for autoclear, disable ultrapeer capabilities, reduce upld bandwidth to 70-80%.

Hmmmm was reading some posts on this earlier.

Seems some have resolved this by uninstalling then reinstalling java.

I would try LotR suggestions 1st, and use this as a possible option if they don't resolve the problem.

Have a good day

Guys

For your info, I installed the latest Java and, it seems that now LW appears to "freeze" instead of crashing the pc.

If i have to change my upload and download speed, any ideas what it should be?

Im 1mb cable and have no idea what the up/down speed is!

Why does LW freeze for a few seconds now when it normally crashes?

muttley66 March 20th, 2005 08:25 AM

I have now tried all advice, not only does LW still crash my pc but it also, makes it appear to freeze!

can anyone send me simple info on tweaking LW to make it run fast on my broadband and not to crash?

Check this link out. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=35273

Sounds like your problem is similar now.
