ok: go to your sound icon, click on it to open it, then at the top of the tabs, click on hardware and that will show you what sound cards/devices you have installed.

Under hardware it says:

Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller (WDM)
MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device
Standard Game Port
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Media Control Devices
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Video Codecs

Hope that helps

I have the same setup. heh. And when you play a music file what happens? Do you get sound or is it just a AVI files that are out of whack?

Sound's fine. It's just the AVI that's jerky. It's a bit hard to explain. I don't have problems with anything else, just this AVI, but the other computer plays it fine.

To try to explain it: It kinda looks like it's flashing and skipping from frame 1 to frame 3 and skipping one in between. It's like a cruddy old cartoon where if a cat was walking from one side of the road to the other. You'd see the cat stand up, then suddenly it's a quarter of the way across then all of a sudden it's on the footpath on the other side. You don't see the whole action, it just goes from point a to point c and skips point b in the middle.

It's kinda perplexing. I'm assuming the computer just needs to be replaced but someone out there might have the magic key that lets me solve the problem considering I can't really afford a new machine.

if you tried it in a newer computer and it played fine the only possible thing I can think of is your cards might need to be updated on the older machine. Id say the file is corrupt but if it played ok on a newer machine then its not the file, nor is it your sound drivers ect. You can try reading some more threads on the forums. sorry I couldnt be of more help, outside of updating your drivers, which I dont think you need to do or, updating your graphics cards, which, Im not sure you'd want to go to that expense. have you tried other movie files on the same machine?

I've only had this happen one other time and didn't think much of it at the time because I didn't have the 2nd computer to try it on. Most files play without any problems. I'm assuming it is that I just need to update everything but as you say, I'd rather not incur the expense at this stage.

Thanks for all your help though

Default Jerky AVI

Guys, I'm having this same problem with a BRAND NEW XP computer. Its not just the playback with win media player. After I convert the downloaded avi to mpeg2, I still have the same problem.

Its like the downloaded file had missing frames. Is that possible?
