Downloading

I am a newbie, I downloaded a programme (Zip) I then tried to open but zip folder empty. Am I doing somethig wrong? Is there a special procedure for downloading programmes and unzipping? Had no success at all to date. Im ok with music files

Thanks for any help for newbie
