Default Download Speeds

Interesting that my isp might have something to do with it. I don't think that is the case with me. How could they possibly be monitoring my download speed and then when it gets too high regulate it. I sure hope this isn't the case as I pay quite a bit for my cable service.

Hello all: Like myself, many new members are totally puzzled about their down or up load speeds, both fluctuating and being far slower than advertised speeds they are paying their ISP a substantial sum for monthly. I had no idea 'Traffic Shaping' or 'Bandwidth Throttling' even existed. It took a two month battle with my ISP tech help; excuses given...heavy traffic, bad connection, distance from server node, something wrong with your computer, etc, before a senior tech executive finally admitted they do use TShaping on p2p's; eg - LWire. Mine throttles LW UPload sharing; some throttle DOWNloading. Example; for about a month at advertised 125 KILOBYTES UPload, not bits, my max upload sharing was throttled to 4 KILOBYTESmaximum 24/7. And it is getting extremely hard to find an ISP that does not use very fancy p2p throttling programs, supplied by companies like Sandvine of Waterloo, Canada. Many ISP call center help techs are knowledgeable and helpful, but they are either unaware their company uses throttling, or are under strict instructions never to mention or admit it, if asked. The ISP's globally, who hate to even talk about p2p throttling, will, if pushed, defend their position by stating that without throttling they would go bankrupt, because carte blanche p2p use would consume over half of their purchased bandwidth blocks. I partially agree, but their throttling is far too severe, and there should be a happy middle ground between p2p users and ISP's. Both throttling and its severity is growing very fast around the world, and the battle between ISP profit vs. the wonderful original principles of the Internet, is escalating daily. I wish you all good luck in finding an increasingly rare ISP that doesn't use p2p shaping/throttling. caseybob
