Connecting..., Hosts tried, Need More Sources.. Please Help me

I have been using limeWire forever and i'v never had any problem with it. I rebooted my computer yesterday and redownload limewire, but now when i click on a song I'v searched for to download it says Connecting..., then it will say for example Connecting (20 hosts tried)... It will stay like that and keep adding numbers for several min. then it will say Need More Sources. Why is it doing this? Can you please help me?

Drunken Warrior August 29th, 2007 02:08 AM

I've got exactly the same problem.

Never had any problems before. Firewall is fine, lists and finds loads of files and users, but will not start off the download even if it shows 100 users with file. Just get the messages as HeatherAnisha above..

Anyone got a fix or some ideas ??

wondering why August 29th, 2007 04:33 AM

Try going to your Connections Tab in limewire, if it's not showing up go to Veiw > Show/Hide and make sure the connection tab has a tick next to it...
Then click on the Hosts and remove them and let Limewire search for some more...
(try to take note of the hosts IP numbers if the same ones keep re-appearing add them to your host filter...) ;)

Tools > Options > Filters and select the Host Filter and add these IP's into it and select apply...

shakey80 August 30th, 2007 09:37 AM

I had the same problem start recently. I have tried reconnecting and getting other hosts (I get different hosts each time), but nothing is helping. I'm running XP on a cable connection. I can occasionally get .mp3's, but .avi's haven't worked in a few days no matter what I try. Help?

otterman038 August 30th, 2007 11:14 AM

Wondering Why-I did exactly what you advised and nothing changed. I finally got it to work not 10 minutes ago and this is what I did kids: (1) I stopped the program. (2)Went to "install/uninstall," from the control panel uninstalled the program. (3) From the start menu searched for the last little bits and pieces and deleated them. (4) Emptied my recycle bin both mine and Norton protected. (5) Ran another search from start for Limewire and deleated anything that even remotely resembled limewire. (6) Re-booted my system. (7) Logged back on and went on line and downloaded limewire to desktop. (8) Installed limewire from desktop following all the promps. (9) Ran the program. (10) Before I even looked for a song went to the Connections Tab just like Wondering Why instructed and tick next to the connection tab. I didn't mess with the hosts. (11) Picked a song and ran the search like I normaly do and it worked.
I don't know if there's a hiccup in the software or if it was just blind luck, but it seems to have done the trick. Has anyone contacted Limewire directly and asked if there's a problem with the updated software bundle or if it was just a problem with their server? I didn't have problems until about 10am EST and it looks like everyone else that was asking it was about the same time but on different days. Too many people on the server? I think maybe we should call/email the company. Anyone have a direct e-mail address or phone #? I hope I was of some help. Brightest Blessings Otterman038

shakey80 August 30th, 2007 12:28 PM

I tried the uninstall/reinstall plan a couple of times and once using an older version and I had the same problems. So, I am back to the newest version and no downloads. Thank you for your help, Otterman038. More ideas?

jbjimbo August 30th, 2007 06:29 PM

Just for the record, my problem sounds very simular - so there is a apparently a bunch of us.

richardroy August 30th, 2007 07:31 PM

I am having connection problems too, mine used to work but I haven't downloaded in a while. Now at the bottom left of the screen Limewire has detected a firewall. Turned it off in Windows and on my Norton. Still doesn't work, anybody have suggestions?

wondering why August 30th, 2007 11:29 PM

Try this guys, it's a hostile IP number list, but remember it will only work for versions 4.13 and later...;)
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/open-d...-limewire.html

shakey80 August 31st, 2007 04:22 AM

I tried the hostile IP list. As far as I can tell from your link, I need to download the zip file and copy the hostiles.txt into the Application Data folder for Limewire. I put it in the regular folder under Program Files, just to cover my bases. I restarted Limewire and the downloads, but nothing new is happening. It is still "Connecting...". Next step?

You could have killed limewire.
Another note kids:

DO NOT USE THE INSTALL UNINSTALL ON THE CONTROL PANEL UNLESS YOU WANT TO CORRUPT LIMEWIRE! USE THE UNINSTALL EXECUTABLE IN LIMEWIRE'S PROGRAM FILES!

Point made.

shakey80 August 31st, 2007 09:20 AM

Could you expand on "killed"? If I have previously used Control Panel to uninstall Limewire, can I undo any problems caused by that uninstallation by using program's uninstall and reinstalling?

Nope search for limewire in the system search. delete everything. You'll need to start over again. Use regedit and go delete the limewire registry keys. go ask lord of the rings or 6_pac on how to do it.

otterman038 August 31st, 2007 10:03 AM

That is the point. Uninstalling limewire using just it's uninstall portion of the program made the file corrupt. The only way I could "fix" it was to totally remove it, every little piece in every little corner of my C drive. I rebooted my system and did another search from the start menu and then installed limewire from scratch, like I never had it. After loading it I made sure the connections tab was checked off, it wasn't, unlike previous versions of the software bundle. Then it worked fine. What's so scary about killing something that's not working right to begin with? Maybe my solution is not for the faint of heart but I don't like to monkey around with a program. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. And I ask again, has anyone contacted the Limewire makers? All this fuss very well may be able to be fixed with a patch. Sorry if I ruffled some feathers. I was only trying to help.

Zarabaath August 31st, 2007 10:06 AM

yeah because the uninstaller leaves the .props (properties) file behind and the registry keys and some other stuff.

Dangers of Regedit

May I please break in here and remind all of you that it is very unwise to casually suggest to users to enter Regedit and clear or edit settings.

The very great majority of people posting here are not experienced users and can easily do a lot of harm to the installed software... INCLUDING MAKING THEIR OPERATING SYSTEM INOPERATIVE.

Regedit is not something to play in.
Any advice regarding working in Regedit should include full details and step-by-step instructions... AND a clear warning of the possible loss of not only installed applications but the Operating System itself.

bigcuz August 31st, 2007 10:15 AM

hey all, i just had the exact same problem with limewire. I used ottermans approach and it worked perfectly.

if you dont want to go through all of that then just check your application data folder. if it doesn't contain the limewire folder then thats why your having this problem. for some reason my limewire application data folder had moved itself to the same for that the application data folder was in, and renamed itself .limewire . i recreated the problem just to ensure that was the cause, and behold i couldn't download. Then i just copied the folder, renamed it LimeWire and placed it in the application data folder, and limewire worked properly again.

Yeah and if you noticed he edited one of my posts for "breaking some rule" even though it's not copyright. because noone can get it.

shakey80 August 31st, 2007 10:53 AM

Bigcuz, I am looking into your suggestion, but I'm not sure I know exactly what to look for. In the Application Data folder, I have a Limewire folder that contains lots of other stuff. Is it something in the folder or the absence of the folder that is the problem? So far, none of the uninstall/reinstall, connections suggestions have worked.

shakey80 August 31st, 2007 03:23 PM

My last post may have been unclear: I can connect to the system, but my downloads (.avi) don't connect to users and download.

I was able to download last week and I haven't changed any settings.

My details:
1. OS version? XP
2. What firewalls you have? We have a router, but I can't tell you much about it. It is DLink or Linksys.
3. How much ram? 376MB
4. Hard Disk space available? 5.3GB out of 16GB
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) Cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Router - SMC Barricade SMC7004ABR
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? house
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. 4.14.8
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Rogers (Canada)
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It worked!
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. I'm not sure. No other p2p programs and there was one other computer using the router, but it isn't around now.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. I have been using Limewire for nearly a year and this is a new problem.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Yes
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...1&d=1158099342
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? UPnP enabled
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall http://www.gnutellaforums.com/../ima...lies/smile.gif AVG Free, although there may be bits of Norton or McAfee that weren't removed when I uninstalled them.
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). Canada

Zarabaath August 31st, 2007 03:25 PM

Right, go check PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall and look for your router make/model to see if it has a firewall.

Fixes for Limewire when LW isn't operating as it should

shakey80 August 31st, 2007 05:22 PM

When I try to port forward, I am led through several steps. One is to go to Run and type in Command. When I do that, I can see the DOS prompt, but there is an error and it doesn't matter which option I choose, the program closes.
Error:
**************************
C:\WINDOWS\system32\command.com
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
CLOSE IGNORE
*************************
(A) How do I fix that?
(B) Is there another way to get my IP, subnet, etc. numbers from my computer or an alternate way of getting to the prompt?

Thanks for all of the help so far, folks!

shakey80 August 31st, 2007 05:25 PM

About the preferences folder, I don't see one. I looked in Program Files\Limewire and Application Data\Limewire and all subfolders. Is it good that I don't have one or am I looking in the wrong places?

shakey80 August 31st, 2007 05:31 PM

Me again! I found an alternate route to the DOS prompt, so that is solved.

shakey80 August 31st, 2007 06:28 PM

I kept going with the port forwarding help, but I don't have the password for my router (I didn't set it up). I have tried everything I can find through Google to reset it, but I can't get into the setup for it. I don't know what to do next. Limewire is just sucking the life out of me!

wondering why September 1st, 2007 01:56 AM

Ok let's leave the Port Forwarding for the moment, you need to have a LimeWire preference folder...
So let's try this first and see how we go...

Uninstall all versions of Java from the add/remove programs and then re-install the JRE 5.11 offline version....
Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11

Then uninstall Limewire using the uninstaller which is found in start > all programs > limewire...then re-install it using the offline installer...To find the offline installer, use the link below > cancel the installer window when it pop's up and then select the offline installer link...
Lime Wire » Download LimeWire

let's see if you can connect to your downloads now....
Then we will tackle your Nat Firewall...;)

shakey80 September 1st, 2007 09:17 AM

I tried that (is it normal to have 5 different Java programs/updates to uninstall?), but nothing has changed. Maybe it is just videos...

otterman038 September 1st, 2007 06:08 PM

Sorry

I never have used Limewire for video. I'm sorry :( I do know that once I deleted EVERYTHING, because even after doing the uninstall thing from the control panel, there were still little bits and pieces scattered all over my C drive, and did a hard boot, looked for more of the program by going through the C drive one file at a time and then down loading the limewire program and making sure the "connections" part was checked off, it worked. But, I do only use it for music, I guess that makes me a relic. I need to have someone show me how to use the video function. I would love to be able to use my burner as it was intented. I know there's a big stink about what I did but if all else fails I believe in starting from scratch. It's too bad I didn't save the older version, I think they put out newer versions before they're really tested. I'm sorry I'm not more help.:(

shakey80 September 1st, 2007 06:59 PM

Thanks for trying! I tried the uninstall/install method both ways and neither worked. At least you tried :)

otterman038 September 1st, 2007 07:43 PM

Is it just videos you are having problems with ???
I thought it was every file you tried to download....

It would be just a case of fake files then, this thread will explain how to avoid them...
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/downlo...h-results.html
Also within that thread is a link on how to use Bitzi...Use it and remember to always use Bitzi before downloading, if it's not rated then it's more than likely no good....

shakey80 September 2nd, 2007 05:48 AM

Well, music wasn't working properly for awhile, but it eventually works. I don't use Limewire for much other than videos. Oops, I thought I mentioned that earlier.

I tried Bitzi a few days ago and none of the files that I tried were rated, but I downloaded files that appeared to be the same to a friend's computer previously and those were fine. I know they could be different files, but there should be some good copies of them available and I couldn't find any. Is that normal? I'll try again.

Remoc September 2nd, 2007 07:05 AM

I think your really taking your chances downloading files that aren't rated on Bitzi. At least scan every file with a GOOD AV before you open it.

You might also try searching at different times of the day and night. Also vary your search quary, to see if that helps get better results. If your looking for movies, I think AVI Files are your best bet. Hope this helps. :D

shakey80 September 2nd, 2007 06:23 PM

Hey! I was really persistent with checking for Bitzi rated files and it worked! Or, it has downloaded for 20 seconds. That is more than before. There are an excessive number of crappy files out there, because I tried downloading nearly everything I could find. Thank you for all of your help, folks :)

RimedEmbrace September 2nd, 2007 09:59 PM

I'm having the same problem as all of you. I downloaded some music just a few days ago without incident, and now, trying to use it, it gives me the whole, "Connecting...Hosts Tried...Needs More Sources/Awaiting Sources" bullcrap.

I've tried copying ".limewire." and moving it to the application data folder, but I would really like to avoid completely removing limewire and redownloading it as I have A LOT of music on there...=[

Has no one figured out a 100% fix for this? It's ridiculous.

You won't loose any of your files either...;)

enflammer September 3rd, 2007 10:49 PM

I'm having the same problem too. I installed Limewire 4.14.8 and it worked fine for several hours. I left my computer then when I got back, all downloads has stopped and I kept getting the same message (Connecting, Host Tried, Need More Sources) when I retried. Limewire can still search and upload, but seems like it can't download. I have another PC with Limewire 4.12, and it works normally. Maybe some bug in 4.14.8?

wondering why September 4th, 2007 01:49 AM

Sounds like the 4.14 is a bit buggy...
Maybe the hosts that you where downloading from went offline...Try canceling the files and then resume them from your incomplete folder...

You could also try connecting to some new ultrapeers...
Go to your Connections Tab in limewire, if it's not showing up go to Veiw > Show/Hide and make sure the connection tab has a tick next to it...
Then click on the Hosts and remove them and let Limewire search for some more...
(try to take note of the hosts IP numbers if the same ones keep re-appearing add them to your host filter...) ;)

Tools > Options > Filters and select the Host Filter and add these IP's into it and select apply...

Also this hostile list is very handy...It only works for the 4.13 and above versions of limewire...

I am having the exact same prob as everyone else seems to be having. Can I ask what does this tick everyone keeps talking about next the connection tab. I have a blue turbo charged bar for my connection and still no downloads (music). I have already removed some hosts and gotten all new, but still nothing. Kelp anyone! Is the only solution to uninstall and re-buy it?
