0kbs Downloading - have read all threads & still no joy! Using BT HomeHub (Problem Solved) *

 HI

I have been through all posts on the forum regarding download speeds and have tweaked, port forwarded, changed options and still I have 0/1 kbs downloads and maybe 3kbs uploading. I am at the end of my tether!
I am not a computer wiz and it took me ages to do the port forwarding bit etc., - so if you can help can it be in the simplest terms possible? Assume you are dealing with an idiot - because you are!

Many thanks
Lisa

Have you seen this thread (sorry if you have)? There are some good tips: A few things to consider while configuring Limewire for optimal performance...

Do a speed test here: Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
When you do the test, don't have any other programs running... just the page with the speed test open;)

Answer as many of these questions as you can: System details - help us to help you -> Provide these details when you post!!!

Let us know if you're stuck with any of those questions:)

Thanks Birdy

Thanks Birdy. Will go through those questionnaires etc and will let you know how I get on. xx

HI Birdy,
My laptop info is.......

Windows Vista
2.00GB RAM
90BG Hard Disk Space left (160 GB Hard Disk when empty)
Wndows Firewall and Norton Anti-virus(Symantec) Firewall ( both switched off but the brick wall is still present)
Home computer - using wireless connection ( have tried with ethernet cable but makes no difference)
BT ( British Telecom) are my provider
BT HomeHub
The test page said - Test worked
I am not sharing connection with any other computers
I have tried port forwarding ( used port 54069 to and from and listen also) and the default Upnp setting - both delivering the same disappointing results.

The speed test results are as follows........
Download 5871 kb/s
Upload 301 kb/s
ISP: British Telecommunications
Server: London
Ping 64 ms
Distance < 50 mi

Hope this covers everything. It all means nothing to me, I'm afraid! Hope you can help.

Are you seeing a brick wall in front of the blue world icon? :)

Brick Wall

Hi Lord,

Yes - I am seeing the brick wall although Norton and Windows Firewalls are switched off.

If I recall, BT HomeHub has some type of settings, need to check their site for more details. It might be what's affecting things for you. I'm vague on the details except some type of security was involved .. not sure if from your end or theirs but one you do have some control over with settings via a browser I believe.

Maybe two issues here:

1. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...tml#post271710 Peak hour p2p bandwidth shaping.

2. Your brick wall is probably due to your BT Homehug. Port forward might be best way to fix it. First & most important step is (1) Setting up a Static ip for VISTA

(2) BT HomeHub port forward instructions

fingalcrom December 15th, 2008 02:58 PM

I have followed all the steps - created a static ip address and port forwarded. I now see that the brick wall has disappeared but the speed has not increased much. I am now getting around 13kbs.
Is there anything else I can do - or is this as good as I can expect it to get?
Thanks for all your help so far.

That's good - if the firewall icon's disappeared then it sounds like you port forwarded successfully:)

Try changing ports. There's no guarantee that this will help (since your slow speeds are probably due to BT) but it's worth a try. In LW go tools > options > advanced > firewall. Change LW's listening port to 65000 (or you can try any ports in the range of 49152 - 65535) > apply > ok.

Once you've done that, you'll need to set up port forwarding for that new port number. No need to do another static IP setup, just use the same static IP address that you used for port forwarding before. LW's listening port, port in the 'manual port forward box' & port forwarded within the HomeHub's setup must all be the same number.

Have you tried connecting outside of peak hours? You might find that you're only being throttled during BT's peak hours (check out the 'traffic shaping & port throttling' section in the link below for more info.

HI Birdy,

Thanks for the info. I will give that a go.
I have been trying pretty much over the whole 24hr spectrum to see if it improves. What I have noticed is that the speed grinds to a halt at the weekend.
I will keep you posted as to my success with a new port.
Many thanks to both you and Lord for all your help.

Hi Birdy and Lord,

Thanks to you guys, I am now getting around 175kbs! Thank you soooo soooo much. Your info was concise, without jargon and easily followed. Fabulous!

Great to hear. :) So the port range was the problem? If so, that means we can pass same advice across to other BT users. :)

fingalcrom December 16th, 2008 03:20 AM

Hi,

I think so, however, I had changed the port previously and had no joy. I am wondering if setting a static ip had an impact also? As since seting the static ip and seting the port range to 65000, I have had much faster speed.
Hope that helps.

LOL - managed to misspell 'setting' twice!

Lord of the Rings December 16th, 2008 03:45 AM

lol it happens. :) Yes port range between 49152 - 65535 are not officially used & usually the last ones that any ISP will choose to place any preventions upon if they are using any port restriction stategies. Thank you for posting back. :)

The sad thing is most ISPs in UK now have some kind of anti-p2p sharing approach. And many ISP's are under the same owners (retaining their original name however) thus use same or similar attitudes & approaches. Corporate take overs & owning as much of the ISP ranges as possible seems to be their aim. O.o Tiscali is a good example of such, now taking over much of UK's ISPs, but most of their users are unaware who their real owner is.

fingalcrom December 16th, 2008 04:45 AM

Oh No! Just restarted my computer and I have the brick wall back again - although I have checked that my firewalls are off. Everything has gone back to 0kbs except uploads which are going at 24kbs.
What's gone wrong?

fingalcrom December 16th, 2008 04:50 AM

Just noticed that the 'listen on port' had changed to another number althought the manual port forward number hadn't. That has solved the problem.

Sorry to have bothered you again.

Lord of the Rings December 16th, 2008 05:48 AM

That's odd. UPnP setting will have the listening port change. However when set to Port Forward in LW's advanced settings, the listening port should remain the same each time you open LW. :)

fingalcrom December 16th, 2008 06:05 AM

Yes - I thought it was odd too. I will let you know what happens when I restart my computer again. At least I will know now what is wrong - even if it is strange! LOL

Hi,

Restarted my computer and LimeWire still had the correct listening port this time. My speeds have dropped drastically again - around 8kbs - but I am guessing that is because it is peak time now in the UK.

*sighs* yes ... does look like BT is shaping p2p bandwidth during peak hours. And looks as though it's not related to any range of ports.

Thank you for the update. :)

I believe there are 'still' ISP's which do not shape p2p bandwidth in UK. Obviously BT is not one of them. We did have a couple of UK mod/valued members on these forums who kept us up to date on which were good ISP's afatk. But one retired, one left for bluer fields. lol :D

fingalcrom December 16th, 2008 12:37 PM

Hi Lord,

Unfortunately I am no computer wiz, so I wont be able to keep you up to date with anything much! I would if I could, as you have been so helpful on the forum. I will post any further changes I notice that may be relevant or helpful to other BTHomeHub users.
Thanks again for all your concise help - and speedy replies!

Microsoft Security Update

Hi guys,

I have a brickwall again in LimeWire. I have checked that all the firewalls are off and that the listening port has stayed as I set it - all seems normal. The only change I have made is installing an 'urgent' security update from Microsoft. Could this be the problem? If so how do I resolve it?

Thanks

Ignore that last post. It has now disappeared again. Totally random!!!!!!!!
