No downloads? What's changed?

I've been using LimeWire for sometime, but lately when I enter an artist's name, instead of getting a steady stream of hundreds of downloads, I get none, or one or two with the Limewire icon and a "buy me" at the beginning of the file. What's going on here? It's absurd to think there are no files of music from Miles D*vis or the B*atles!? What am I missing that's changed, here?

How many green bars do you see at LW's bottom left corner?

Short answer: five. After I posted that note, I tried a search again and it worked fine. Just now, the next day, same problem. Enter "Miles Davis"= 0 returns, "Beatles" = 0 returns.

Lord of the Rings December 30th, 2008 03:57 AM

I sometimes have bad search days. I think it might be related to ultrapeers you're connected to.

Go to LW's menu bar, View menu -> Show Hide Connections. Then right-click heading bar & tick option to show vendor/version. Select one (if any) that are not LW version 4.18, then press Remove button at bottom of window. Even if all 4.18, select one anyway & do that. Now wait for LW to find another ultrapeer to connect to .. wait until LW stabilizes its connection. Then go & try a search again. You may need to repeat this process.

The thing about how LW works is .. a search will only find a certain % of the entire network. It therefore depends on ultrapeers you are connected to to get results you are looking for.

Keep in mind also, some ultrapeers are actually spammers & some are just poor functioning ultrapeers.

jazzman111 December 30th, 2008 04:13 AM

When I went to connections, there were no entries at all under "Vendor/Versions". At the top of the graph it read:

"0 Ultrapeers, 0 peers, 0 Leaves, 10 connecting, 0 Standard"

So it looks like, for some reason, my LW is not connecting with any peers.

jazzman111 December 30th, 2008 04:39 AM

After I posted my last note, I left LW on in the background and went about doing other things online. When I went back to LW, there were well over a dozen Ultra-peers showing. I guess it sometimes takes awhile for LW to locate them? I don't recall that happening in the past. Has something changed in the LW software or procedures?

Right-click heading bar. Or did I forget to say that. :) :p That will give you more column view options. Same applies on all the other windows. ;)

You should be seeing 3 stable ultrapeers. If up to nine or more coming & going, it means your connection is unstable. I did warn you to be careful about that. ;)
(My example shows 5 ultrapeer connections, because I'm using LW Pro. My bandwidth was shaped mid month & now on dial up speed for another couple of days, but no problems connecting.)

jazzman111 December 30th, 2008 09:49 AM

Not sure which classifies as the "heading bar", but I clicked on several areas, with no effect. In any case, my "Connections" page showed three Ultrapeers, which I gather is what we want. Earlier there were probably two dozen or more, which you said means I have an unstable connection. Anything I can do about that for next time it happens?

Lord of the Rings December 30th, 2008 09:54 AM

It's natural for LW's connection to become unstable for a little while whilst it searches for a new available ultrapeer in the nearby area.

The Heading bar is the horizontal line. See above image example, the heading bar is .. Host, Messages, Bandwidth, Dropped, Protocol, etc. (If you're using MacOSX, then use Control-click).

OK, thanks for all your tips. Most helpful. On another note, I (re-)discovered that there are more than a few files you download from LW that contain viruses and/or Trojans. Fortunately, I have the protection of both firewall and anti-virus software. That's what they're for, right?

Lord of the Rings December 31st, 2008 02:26 AM

Yes. Commonly found virus sizes & auto renaming you will see can be seen here: Virus thread: Typical virus spam file sizes - Make a note of them (click on blue link to see)

They spam the network in an attempt to prevent copyright file sharing. Some files have viruses, some are deliberately corrupted in some form or fashion, some are audio sounds, some audio songs with overdubs, some are image adverts, small videos tend to be adverts for porn sites.

Good idea to add certain words to your keyword filter to block various junk spam from your search results; check both links within this one: Direct instructions to eliminate porn from results

Once again, Lord, many thanks for all your help. Happy new year!

I know that Limewire does not give refunds, because they have a free version for people to test out. Since they is no sign-in or anything, who would stop people from just saying that their Limewire does not work and demand money back.

This is of course if you bought it from limewire.com if not, then you have been scammed and should contact your credit card company for a refund. There are a lot of scam sites promising people millions of legal free songs, Lifetime membership etc. They are selling a product that in no way belongs to them in the first place.

amyrose December 31st, 2008 08:42 AM

I did buy it from Lime Wire Pro, the free version was to slow, in the beginning it worked just fine. Now it works once every month if i am lucky.
I just want the darn thing to work!
Why don't they do something about it? and who do you talk to so you can complain?

Lord of the Rings December 31st, 2008 08:53 AM

Phone number at top of your receipt I believe.

If you have a connection problem, which you obviously do, then you can try to solve it else forget all about it.

Connection problems are the 'user's' fault, not the people who created the program. Every single p2p sharing program out there has users who have difficulty connecting properly or at all. :)

If you wish to try to solve your connection problem & have some motivation to trying different things, then go to the LW Connection problem section & create a new thread & supply these details: System details - help us to help you (click on blue link)

In meantime, try out all of these suggestions, sometimes a combination works: If LW Will Not Connect (click on the blue link). For many people, replacing their gnutella.net file has fixed their problem. For others it might be more complicated such as configuring their modem/router for port forwarding, etc. :)

amyrose December 31st, 2008 08:56 AM

My connection and kable is perfect, i do not have a firewall and i paid for a service that doesnt excist. I bought thrue the internet, paid with my creditcard. So how can i call some one?

Lord of the Rings December 31st, 2008 08:59 AM

I just told you. Read my post again since I was editing whilst you posted. lol :D
Your connection to internet is fine yes. But your connection to gnutella network is zilch by the sounds. If you were playing online games, you would most likely have same problems. ;) Some online activities are more complicated than simply opening a browser & doing what you wish. ;)

And sorry, we do not post out LW's telephone number on the site. If you are a pro user, go to their site, go to Support page, enter details & send an email. :)

We do not work for LW, and this site is independent. We are also simply hobbyist volunteers.

It's already new year here by several hours. Happy new year btw. :)

amyrose December 31st, 2008 09:28 AM

I do play online games and they go fine! Happy new year and thanks..

Lord of the Rings December 31st, 2008 09:35 AM

If you just want to complain to LW then we can leave it at that. Otherwise if you wish us to look at your connection problem to the gnutella network, then follow my advice in post #16 above. :)

(BTW LW do leave their phone no. on the credit card receipt I believe.)
