Your issue is Partial File Sharing. And you are correct that there is no option to turn this off in LW 5. This is not the same as sharing your incomplete folder. But similar. It's a similar process used for torrents also, that parts of the file you have already downloaded, you upload to others. This overall helps speed up downloads for everyone. And if you are downloading from multiple hosts, chances are some of those are actually partial file sharing the file; the other person does not yet have the entire file. This is one reason why for very large files such as video files, you tend to lose hosts as you get over 90% downloaded. Partial Sharing is fantastic for the network & benefits everyone. Only LW 4 has an option to disable Partial File Sharing. There is the other option of Tools -> Options -> Downloads, option of Share files downloaded from the P2P Network with the P2P Network. This means the files get shared after 100% completion of downloading. I guess in some ways one could argue that the inability to turn off partial file sharing helps stop total 'leeching' by those who do not wish to share any files whatsoever. (On a side-note, whilst using LW 4.16 I found an odd situation last night. I had partial file sharing turned off, share immediately after downloading turned off, yet I had lots of people in upload window attempting to get a file I was downloading, even after the video download completed. The upload message was "File could not be found". lol Some kind of bug I suspect. ... I share 8,500 file btw. I have partial file sharing & finished downloaded file sharing turned off so I can check the file first before consideration of sharing.) |
I wouldn't call that a bug...its most likely because the file was listed as completed and shared for just a moment and that information was spread around the network's caches via the UPs...soooo...others see you as a source for the file, want it, yet by the time a connection is made with you its out of shares... |
My LW's setting is not to share 100% completed files. So at no time should it have been communicated to the network it was shared. Basically from moment of beginning of downloading to after completion, it should not have been shared at any point. Only time i turn on Partial File sharing is if my uploads are a little quiet. |
point taken...again I am guilty of speed reading a post and missing a vital point... as a BS user I've seen that message a lot of times from supposed sources of a file.... and perhaps its not really a 'bug' rather something included into the program so that 'others' can track content on the network...you know, those 'people' LW has been 'working with'...in theory if you don't partial share and don't share completed downloads then you should never be listed as a source (i.e. in possession) of a file...this 'bug' allows downloaders to be 'detected' by people who are not the source of the file.... |
Well...it's been several weeks, and no matter how I choose to "share", I still have the same problem! But another odd thing happened to me...i found myself on the exact opposite side! I had searched for documents, and found one particular user had a lot of what I was needing...so I clicked on "view files". It showed this person wasn't sharing ANY documents, yet I was currently downloading 2 and had already downloaded 3 others! Yes, I was able to get entire downloads...even when the user had yet to add them to the "shared" portion of their library! Many other types of files were shown...just not documents. I also had an entirely different problem with another user...it got me so upset I didn't get back on for nearly a week! Seems every file I tried to download was conveniently "unshared" by the user...was still online and was still able to access files, just not the ones I was trying to download. Even deleted almost whole files (over 90% complete), searched again, and found nothing! Just makes me wonder...especially since this user had no idea who was trying to download files...how bored do you have to be to sit and watch your uploads just so you can quickly "unshare" the same file? Why share at all if you're going to go through the hassle I describe? I'm really starting to agree with you all and wonder if these are really "users"! Too many weird things I've found lately! Really thinking about totally leaving. Would miss it, but you know the old addage...just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean that people aren't out to get you! LOL |
Forgot to mention in earlier post... Yes...I download a lot...but also share more than 5000 files. I nearly always limit my downloads to 3 at a time...and will even cut down to 1 at a time if only able to find 1 or 2 users to download from. Yes...this tends to increase my time online drastically...but I think it's proper "netiquette" in order to make sure that everyone is able to share. Just wish others felt the same "netiquette" urges as I do! Just getting increasingly harder to not get upset...especially after I see the long list of uploads! |

there should be rules that if you are not sharing then you cannot get anything also. p2p is suppossedly "sharing"...give and take... |
Well I've cancelled an upload, but it wasn't for the sake of playing games. There seems to be only one version of "edited" circulating, which is an unskilfully made webcam version. For a start the camera was not held straight and the picture is on a slant. Having got it twice from Rapidshare and both times deleted it immediately I tried a torrent and got the same version again. I cancelled the seeding, despite getting a warning message, and deleted the file from my shared folder. I may be on someone's blacklist, but my conscience is clear. When I get a good quality copy then I'll share it, but not before. M |
