A beginner who cant connect to Frostwire

Hi. I'm not a technically minded person, but I'll try and give you as much detail as possible.

I have a Mac OS X 10.4.11
Broadband Connection 4mgbts (I think)
Frostwire 4.17

I have used limewire with no problems before but recently couldn't connect to the network. As a result I downloaded Frostwire but with no success. After I installed the program it trys to connect but comes up with the error message

"frostwire could not detect an internet connection. please check your firewall settings and try to restart frostwire ".

If anyone could help me that would be great but could I please ask if you can take me through it in easy and simple way

Have you enabled FW for the OSX firewall? http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html

My suggestion would be to downgrade your version of LW if possible. See if you still have any old version installers lying around.

I cant find a older version anywhere on my computer.

That link you posted directed me towards a help page for windows computers I think.

He first posted about LW in the connection problems thread (click to see post). Then mentioned his issue here soon after. He tried to use FW to overcome his connection problem because that's what we recommend LW users do when they have difficulty connecting.

So .. obviously with both LW & FW being up the putt for some people I suggested an earlier version. It's much easier to get an earlier version of LW than it is for FW. Even old versions site doesn't list FW. But since he uses mac osx, he probably doesn't realise he has an old version installer in his browser (most likely Safari) download folder. Open Safari & go to Preferences & check where your safari download folder is. :)

BTW I have old OSX versions of both LW & FW ... I can host either if you wish. I do however have more versions of LW than FW. O.o

Still haven't managed to sort it out. But here's the new development.

I went over a friends and managed to connect with frostwire. Got back home and nothing! Its not detecting a connection.

I just got a new netgear router hoping that would solve the problem but nope!

I'm really confused as to what I need to do now. I've been given links to other threads but dont have a scooby doo. Thanks people

System details - help us to help you (click on blue link) :)

Is your OSX firewall on or off? Is there an allowance for all incoming for LW in the firewall rules? For some programs you need to remove the previous firewall rule & re-add it. I had that issue with Phex. :)

Sounds like you may need to port forward your Netgear router. But until we know which model, etc. ;)

The firewall is on. When I go into 'system preferences' - 'sharing' - 'Firewall' it has a massive list. There are no ticked boxes next to any of the list apart from 'Network Time'.

I thought it wouldn't have anything to do with the firewall as I hadn't changed any of the settings before or after I connected through my friends internet. But to be fair, I dont know what im talking about.

The Netgear router is DG834G v3 -54 mbps ADSL.

I dont have any idea how to 'port forward' so if you know what to do with this model and could talk me through it, your an absolute hero

1. OSX firewall instructions: OSX Firewall settings for Tiger/Leopard. You'd probably need to do this for each of LimeWire & FrostWire. Make sure they are not using the same connection & listening ports. Check this via the program's preferences -> Advanced -> Firewalls.

2. Most important step about port forwarding is the very first one which you must do first: (a) Setting up a Static ip for OSX

(b) Can't find mac instructions but windows will be very similar: Port Forwarding for the Netgear DG834G ... make a note of the difference in ip given between the two however. Also for LW or FW settings, see Manual port forward instructions & sample image
