Frostwire won't load in windows Vista

Hi I'm running windows vista 64 bit and have the latest version of Java installed (6 update 14) I have Frostwire version 4.18.0 I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both programs at least 20 times within the past 2 days and it won't load. The logo comes on the screen for a few seconds but then just disappears. I even tried uninstalling java and having frostwire install it for me but when I do that all it says is that frostwire could not launch and needs to be reinstalled the reinstallation still does nothing after that. Oh I have a fire wall but Frostwire is on the allowed list so can anyone help me?
Thank you in advance!

Right-click the installer & choose run as Administrator. Do same thing to FW shortcut after installing. If still problems, right-click FW & change compatibility mode to XP. :)

minimoongirl1119 June 26th, 2009 02:59 PM

I did that to the short cut before so your saying it should work if I try it with the installer itself?

minimoongirl1119 June 26th, 2009 03:10 PM

Okay that didn't work I don't see change compatibility mode as an option when I right click any other way to change the compatibility?

Lord of the Rings June 26th, 2009 03:15 PM

Right-click FW shortcut, choose Properties, select Compatibility tab.

If that does not help, delete the FW preferences: How to delete your FrostWire Preferences folder (click on link). (You need to set your View options to show Hidden Files & Folders, else you will not find the folder; the parent folder Application Data is a hidden folder.)

minimoongirl1119 June 26th, 2009 03:39 PM

When I go to app data the only time I see a frostwire folder is when I go to app data then roaming I'm suddenly very confused sorry thanks for your hwlp!

Lord of the Rings June 26th, 2009 03:43 PM

Oops sorry yes that's it. I forgot about the difference with Vista having the Roaming folder. :o Make sure FrostWire is closed. Then delete the FrostWire preferences folder you find inside the Roaming folder. It's equivalent to the LimeWire location for Vista users: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html

minimoongirl1119 June 26th, 2009 04:22 PM

I deleted the whole folder still a no go I'm starting to get really flustered i even downloaded limewire even though i prefer FW and even that seems to have the same problem

Lord of the Rings June 26th, 2009 04:36 PM

The above fixes usually fix that type of problem.
Let's do a complete clean installation: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/333278-post2.html however of course choose the FrostWire installer instead. FrostWire.com - Official Website And again, remove prefs folder first. Make sure no FW files are on the computer (except installer.) Re-installing Java might do the trick. And then, sometimes one version of Java works better for some rather than other versions.

minimoongirl1119 July 5th, 2009 08:35 PM

originally I had solved the problem by doing a system restore but I had to do another system restore because of my antivirus software and now FW doesn't work again it's the same problem all over again what frustrates me is that frost worked perfect the week I got it which was the week of June 16. Now my anti virus software is back up to date which it was not able to do during the restore which let frostwire work. I though maybe it was because of my CA internet Security suite but even when I disabled everything Frost still didn't work. Do you have any other ideas of what to do? I'm not having any problems with any other programs so I don't think it's java,

Lord of the Rings July 5th, 2009 09:44 PM

From memory CA security suite contains a spyware program that identifies p2p programs as having spyware even when they do not (it will attack the program & damage it). You will need to reinstall FW. And, put FW on that spyware program's safe list.

Found it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PestPatrol previously called PestPatrol is anti p2p software. Simply search the word PestPatrol on these forums to get some history on it. ;)

BTW CA has a colorful history lol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CA,_Inc.

minimoongirl1119 July 7th, 2009 04:30 PM

Okay well now I uninstalled CA because it was giving me constant update problems anyway but FW still gives the same problem I now have AVG free so is there any setting I need to change on that to get it to work?

Lord of the Rings July 7th, 2009 05:28 PM

I haven't used AVG myself though some people on the forums recommend it. They'd know best how to configure it. Basic idea is to go to the AVG firewall exceptions rules & create a fresh one for FrostWire. ;)

What is the specific error messages you are receiving?

If it's loading problems, see steps 5 & 6 here: Fixes for Limewire/FrostWire (click on blue link) which might be the trick to fix it. Sometimes it's only a small issue like that.

That's the frustrating thing about it I get no actual error message. what happens is I double click it the logo comes up (as if it is going to load) stays on the screen for about ten seconds and then disappears and the program never loads. What I don't understand is that it had worked fine the first week I had installed it which was the week of June 16 and as far as I can tell I made no major changes to my software that would have affected it. I had CA installed since May 30th which means that FW was running fine with CA installed I tried going back to Limewire but Limewire does the same thing FW is doing.
I attached a thumbnail screen cap the logo is all that comes up it stays for only a few seconds without ever loading.

You uninstalled CA, then re-installed both FW & Java as I suggested in post #9? Again, delete the FW preferences folder whilst the program is closed. Did you try changing compatibility mode to XP, and also both FW & LW must be set to run as Administrator when using Vista (points 5 & 6 in my link in my previous post.)

For Vista, it's best to set the installer to run as Admin, then after installing right-click the FW shortcut choose run as Admin also.

When you re-installed Java, did you download the Offline installer, then remove all previous Java versions first before re-installing Java & reboot the computer after installing (running CCleaner after removing all previous versions & before reinstalling Java)?

I had officially done everything except the reboot after the installation of java so I did that hoping the reboot would be the differtried the comence once it rebooted I ran the installer as admin installed it, unchecked the run frostwire after installation and instead when it was done I clicked on the short cut ran as as admin and still the same I'm officially sad because it had worked perfectly before and was so much better then LW and now not even that works. I also tried the compatibility to XP thing. I lso tried Java 11-13 as well as of course 14 which was the one I had when FW was working and currently switched back to.

Do you still have CA Anti-Spyware on your computer? Whilst it is a good spyware program, p2p sharing programs do not run happily beside it.
There are lots of alternatives to CA Anti-Spyware. Personally I use Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE) with a few other security utilities. And there's at least a couple other good ones also I could give you the links to.

Hi minimoongirl1119,

Try installing FW to a different folder. Check out proxy00's advice here (refers to LW but do the same for FW): FIX: LimeWire won't start or closes immediately

If that's no help, try this older java (JRE 6u5): Archive: Download Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE) 6u5
As usual - download the JRE offline installer, remove all other Java versions installed on your computer, install & then reboot the computer.

I completely uninstalled CA because back when I had got FW to work it had been giving me update problems I have AVG now.

I tried both these suggestions neither one did the trick. This is really starting to bug me out because other then FW refusing to load and even Limewire having the exact same problem my computer is completely normal. It's really frustrating especially since I'm an AMV editor(anime Music video) I use a lot of music so this devolopment is very upsetting as you might imagine. Even though nothing has worked thus far I appreciate everyone's help I really do! I;m sure there must be something to fix it right? especially since it worked before.

Lord of the Rings July 8th, 2009 09:42 PM

See point #1 about a link to LW 4.16 & see if it works at all: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/downlo...downloads.html. If we can get one going hopefully FW will bounce back into action also.

BTW do you have a second account on your computer? You could always set up a Test account & see if LW & FW work there at all. I'm not sure about windows, but on Mac it's very easy & quick to set up a new account & delete it later.

minimoongirl1119 July 9th, 2009 09:21 AM

it worked on the second account I just created! without a single problem but what does that mean? Does that mean that there's something on my usual account which interferes with FW? because other than some desktop shortcuts and things like that I see no major differences in the two accounts. I mean my files and things aren't on the secong account although the programs are and it seems like a real hassle to transfer files form one account to another on the same computer. So what can I do if files are the only difference why does it work on the test account?

Lord of the Rings July 9th, 2009 10:41 PM

Good to hear, that's a start. At least we now know the issue is account specific. Run CCleaner again on main account, both the registry cleaner & the first tab. I wonder if something is amiss ... perhaps remnants of your old security package or something else that is blocking. Trying to find the problem could be extremely difficult. It might even be a hidden file .. a preference file of some description. I'm not a windows wiz on finding such things.

On mac I can run multiple accounts at same time. lol I discovered you can also do that with windows & have two LW's running simultaneously, but that's obviously not the answer we are looking for.

minimoongirl1119 July 10th, 2009 10:18 AM

I ran everything again still the same on the main account still working on the second account though, I was trying to see how to transfer files and folders from one account to another but according to what I've read it is extremely difficult to do and most people seem to say that it shouldn't be attempted. I have way too many files and things to just abandon my main account for the test account. I'm officially at a loss.

minimoongirl1119 July 10th, 2009 12:35 PM

After a bit of digging I found a safe way to transfer the files from my main account to the test account and I ended up deleting my main account and setting up the test account as an administrator as far as I can tell I didn't lose any crucial data. All my files folders, programs etc are still intact and FW works without a hitch. i suppose you can reccomend setting up another account for other people with a seemingly incurable problem with FW. I don't recommend it for anyone who considers themselves computer illiterate or impatient though. Since it took about an hour to two hours to transfer my files and my computer is pretty fast with 4 gb of ram and a 250 gb HD.

Lord of the Rings July 10th, 2009 01:31 PM

Great to hear! Sorry you had to go through that to get FW going again. But glad the issue is solved .. one way or another. lol :D Happy sharing! :)
