Plug in- What is it?

If anyone could help me and explain what a "plugin" is, I would greatly appreciate it. I need to know what a "plugin" is because my computer flashes a message when I try to download saying- plug in did not intailize properly- then another message says- plugin found but error detected.

A plugin is a little program which enhances the features of an existing one. I think thats the easiest explanation.
