Leechers also cause less sharing

A very very sad thing- i thought that since i'd started getting some Record Of Lodoss files (verypopular anime) i'd just share them along with my music. I turn on limewire after getting them, and instantly start getting asses who want 6 connections at once and i cant find them sharing a damned. Not to mention even if i kick them (after several minutes of them trying to put in my queue even MORE requestes) they still get priority over ppl just connecting. The solution i had to use - since there is no banning feature i can find in lime wire- i had to unshare my record of lodoss files. Why? because it was hellatiously annoying to see one user trying to do a billion downloads(- i had set a limit i thought 3 downloads at a time per person limit, was fine, but i get screenfulls of requests from certain ips, annoying, very). Sure he actually couldnt get more than 3- but screenfulls of requests- are ****y.

For someone who wants a "dialog" with people, why are you picking up old posts from almost a year ago and replying to people who are probably not here anymore?
This is even worse than trying to talk to those darn unregistered users, these people don't even exist anymore.

Oh Oh.... this tendency I have to agree with 64.24.HIKE is a bit worrying! ;)
But, RealBigSwede, he is right about your unfortunate archeological digs here......

Nowadays sharing isn't the only way to contribute to the todays world of gnutella with ultrapeers. I see three different groups
  1. Users with slow connections
  2. Users with broadband connections
  3. Users with high speed connections (megabit symmetrical or more)
The first group has very limited amount of bandwidth. They should share only few files and open few upload slots. That will help them maintaining good upload success rate despite the poor connection speed.

Second group has two alternatives:
  1. Become an ultrapeer and don't share files. By maintaining large amount of leaf and peer connections will help everyone. It is okay to not share, you help the network by supporting leaves. It is important to left your client on your computer all the time. It is also important to reserve enough bandwidth to your client.
  2. Stay as leave and share plenty of files. You can reserve more of your upstream to uploads by staying as a leaf. You can serve fast uploads to people and you should have enough shared files to saturate your upload bandwidth.

Third group has enough bandwidth to share files and become an ultrapeer and serve leaves. You don't have to compromise anything.

So I think it is not bad if you don't share if you can run your client as ultrapeer.

Look into satellite...deelpy... and I'm sure you'll all be pleasantly surprised.

I don't think that $700.00 - $1000.00 is cheap, plus subscription on $79.95-$120.00/month has come down like a Zeppelin. :( I talk to Satellite person and they have so intentions to lower their prices. :( Even a used Satellite system is around $400.00. :( And that is with modem (upload) and Satellite (download) and the subscription is at $39.95. Just now they have special 2 month for $29.95 and then up to $39.96.
But, thanks, for telling us that we with 56k modem are second-class members.
And I have seen in the last 3 weeks that more and more clients are cutting us out of the loop. So, Please people, Share with us, too. Yes, we are slow, but we have the heart to share with you, so share with us.
Remember that
p2p only work by sharing with everybody, even with a "slow" modem. And you others, that just downloading and never share, you are the parasite of p2p. You are not helping anyone but yourself, you are a selfish SOB.
If I had a DSL I world share all my MP3s (around 5000) with all of you. Just now I share around 150 - 350 MP3s, and I rotating them every week of the 5000 MP3s. And that is with my 56k modem.
I do all kind of works on my MP3 files, I putting in the album cover, lyrics and other info about the songs. Just now I trying to get the 192 and higher bit rates, on the same songs that I have. I ripping every CD I can get my hands on, from my girl friend to other friend.
:)

KathW, I'm very patient. But if you can't get the file because they cut you off all people with modem.

I ran into the same thing although all I share are mp3 files. A HUGE number of requests! (I'm using 2.5.5 and people can browse my files). Go to Options, then Advanced, and Preferences. That's where you can set your Freeloader choices. Personally, I feel like if a person is offering 500 files then they're serious about the concept of true file-sharing. ((The 500 is my only personal choice, your mileage may vary. :))
