Question can't open files

Why does almost every video file I download say "Could not open the file " " " because the file name was bad" I run into this with almost everything I try to download. It's getting very frustrating.

Any help will be appreciated.

TIA

Are you sure that you're downloading the complete video file and that it's not corrupted?

I use subdirectories to help organize my shared files, but every once in a while I find that some users get that error when trying to download files that are in a subdirectory, while most other clients do not.

Question

I have bunch of video's on my hard drive that I can't open. I'm hoping I'll find a way to open them. Does anyone know if there's anything that can be done??

Thanks

As I see no one is answering, I'll offer a possible solution. If your file name is too long, Windows (or whatever OS you are running) may have a problem with it. Applications will not be able to read them correctly if the OS can't handle it. Try changing the file name to something short. Also, if the file is huge, like a 2.2 GB avi on a Fat32 partition, then it won't play. There is also a limit on NTFS partitions, but it's something like over 4 TBs, so if you are using NTFS (like NT, Win 2k, XP), the file size in bytes shouldn't matter.

Hope this helps. :-)

Trustarwarrior, thank you very very much, you saved the day!!!! That was driving me nuts. I never knew that about the file being to long for Win 98.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, you helped out a great deal.
