Default Firewall Upgraded to FC4, Now Client Fails To Connect

Hi All,

I recently upgraded my firewall to FC4. Now my LimeWire client will not connect. It worked just fine before the upgrade. I'm running LimeWire 4.12.6 on Java 1.5.0_06.

I have all the typical symptoms:
. LimeWire tries to connect to hosts on the Gnutella network, but cannot achieve a connection.
. Connection quality remains at 1 bar indefinitely
. My computer is behind a firewall (little icon with brick wall)

First I tried port forwarding in all flavors. I looked in Tools:Options:Advanced under Firewall Configuration. Listen on Port was 7128 (I think this was correct, read on for details). Use UPnP selected. I port forwarded TCP and UDP for 7128 (as it says in the instructions and several forum posts).

Next I checked to see what ports were being used with
netstat -ln

I observed 7128 (both udp/tcp) and I also observed 6347. 6347 left me concerned because it was one port off 6346.

I tried restarting the LimeWire client and the firewall.

I then tried hitting "Restore Defaults" which changed the Listen on Port to 38201.

I tried port forwarding 38201 (yes, both tcp and UDP).

Then I tried port forwarding the 6347 (tcp/udp).

Then I tried port forwarding the 6346 (tcp/udp).

Then I remembered about selinux and the problems with that. I went into /etc/sysconfig/selinux and changed it from
selinux=enforcing
to
selinux=disabled

Then I rebooted and tried again.

Still no luck.

I then tried changing from Use UPnP to Manual Port Forward. No luck with that, either.

Can anyone please offer any suggestions?

My firewall is FC4 and set to "Medium." I'm very familiar with port forwarding as I run a number of servers that require support from the firewall (they're all fine).

Please let me know if there is any additional information I can provide that might be of value.

Thanks!

Did you make an exception for LW in the software firewall? Or reconfigure it?

I'm not quite sure to what you are referring as an "exception" but it occurs to me I didn't specify and you might be thinking this is all on one box. The firewall is an independent system isolating my private network from the Internet. I have been using port forwarding (iptables) to support LimeWire, as described in the first post. The client worked fine until I upgraded.

Your issue is not a common one & I'm not sure about how to configure such. I presume the ip table is in reference to each computer on the network. In that case, set up an exception for limewire/gnutella & which ever ports you normally connect through. These are the standard Firewall instructions for the most common firewalls: Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

For port forwarding, each account or computer on the network that's using LW would require a separate port forwarding using a different port(s) for each user. Since port forwarding is based on ip of user on network.

Sorry I missed your previous reply. It's funny I take some time off from the forums & you suggest such. lol

Hi! I'm sorry about that. I certainly don't begrudge you your break!

I am rechecking all my ports, now. I will verify that the appropriate ports are available for the client.

I'm also going to upgrade the the latest version as I see 4.12.8 is now out. My fingers are crossed something in the new version or the process of upgrading will help.

Also, what's the story on Listening Port and Router Configuration? My *guess* is that if I use Manual Port Forward set to 6346 and port forward 6346 from my firewall I'm good (and it doesn't matter that Listen on Port is set to some other arbitrary port). Is my guess correct?

Thanks!

OK,

I downloaded and re-installed LW on my Linux box. Still 1 green bar, 4 red. No connectivity.

I then downloaded and installed the Windows client to a windows system on my network running W2kAE. It installed, configed, and ran like a champ. I had 5 green bars seconds after launch--with no firewall pre-config or port forwarding to the W2k box (this is how I designed my firewall to work--transparently to users on the private network).

This leads me to believe that the upgrade of my firewall may have been ancillary to the start of the problem and that the problem is probably on the client system.

Will wiping my LimeWire directory completely remove my LW install? I ask this because that's what I did but when I re-installed it still knew my preferences (though I did verify I was running the new version, 4.2.8).

Thanks!

It is highly probable that FC4 is flawed. Look there for config http://www.linux-noob.com/forums/ind...showtopic=1644
There are probably other firewall softwares you could install from Fedora (via Anaconda, or Yum?). That's what I'd do, install another firewall. On Linux they all work with IP tables.

Do you have a router? If so, just enable the firewall from the router, enable UPnP on it and leave off the firewall on your machines. That's what I do at my home with Mac, Linux and Windows. It is also more secure than software firewalls.

Ciao
