Limewire forgets all my preferences I have Limewire 2.6.3 Pro for Mac OSX. Sometimes when I start Limewire, it starts with the installation setup. And I have to set up all my preferences from scratch. I'm not shure, but I think maybe this happens every time my computer has restarted. Usually my computer only are set to sleep, not shut down completely. Someone who share my problem? |
Forgetting preferences I share your pain. I have LimeWire 2.6.3 (not Pro). Same thing - seems to be after I reboot the machine, Limewire loses all of its preferences. I'm on a Quicksilver G4 933, running 10.2.1. Help - it takes FOREVER to RE-recognize the 2100+ files! |
Same problem, here. every once in a while, limwire pro acts like I just installed it for the first time and takes me through the wizard, or whatever. It kinda sucks. Have you gotten any feedback yet? |
i have the same problem :( |
I have the same problem where Limewire 2.6.3 running on OS X 10.2.1 forgets preferences and starts up with the startup wizard that assumes that this is the first time Limewire is being run. I have a bit of additional detail regarding this problem. My Mac has one admin account (me), and 2 other non-admin accounts. When I installed Limewire from my admin account (into the applications folder), things work perfectly and there are no problems with vanishing preferences. However, when one of the non-admin accounts use Limewire, everytime they quit the application, when Limewire is restarted is behaves like it is being started for the first time. I looked in the library in the user's folder and in the Preferences folder I found the preferences file for Limewire. I reset the privilages for this file so that it belonged to that user and gave the group and everybody read and write privilages. Nice idea, but it didn't make a difference. Is there anybody from Limewire that monitors this forum so we might get an answer? Paul S. |
Wacky Wizard in OS 10.2 yeah, please someone help with the wack setup wizard !!! takes too long to read shared files !! |
setup wizard I have the same problem after updating to 10.2. I've enjoyed using LimeWire but it's a bit ridiculous having to humour the setup wizard every time I log on--and worse, having to reset all the preferences each time. Masa |
More preferences problems... Everyone I've talked to seems be having this problem with LW on Jag. The Preferences just won't hold between sessions and it's maddening. The permissions theory is plausible but I have no expertise in this area and just switched to Jag a few weeks ago. You're probably having a few other issues too: 1. Trying to add a recently downloaded mp3 to itunes despite it being the default player. You'll see the rainbow wheel and/or the text insertion cursor and/or the arrow and it will flash rapidly while Limewire wheezes and moans as it trys to find Itunes and insert the newly downloaded song into the library folder. You might crash on the way. 2. The whole system will become generally unstable and 10X slower and you'll get that nasty feeling of an impending crash. You try to Force Quit and there seems to be a ten second delay between hitting the keys and execution. All in all using 2.7.3 today is like pouring cornflakes into a Ferrari's gas tank. Suggestions appreciated. Configuration: MAC OS 10.2.1 Power MAC G4 400 Limewire 2.7.3 Nano |
Ditto. 10.2; LW won't save prefs. |
have none of you guys read my solution about the wizard problem? I dont know if it is usual here to grouse about something without having detailed studied the previous items. So I please you all to read my last posting about this bug and to reply if this workaround helps. |
Forgets Prefs Well knorr, I just bougth the pro version 2.7 and experience this annoying problem, so I don't have the eariler version. I think what's worse is when companies like LimeWire send you to BBS's for support with no other way to contact them when you have a problem like this forgetting prefs thing. It wouldn't be so bad if the LimeWire had representation on this board, but we're left to fend for ourselves. I think I will ask for a refund until they fix the problem. |
No refunds Oh yeah, I forgot. No refunds for LimeWire. So I will say this: LIMEWIRE - GET YOUR ****ING **** TOGETHER AND PROVIDE SOME REAL SUPPORT AND SOFTWARE FIXES! At least monitor this bulletin board and respond, even if it's a lame "we're working on it"! |
I found an answer for me! I was having the pref forgeting problem too, soooo I read all the stuff on the forum. not too much help but I did see something in a post about a dir, that was named the same as the pref file needed to be named, so, I started mucking around in the hidden stuff and I seemed to get it to work, NOW I haven't restarted my machine (an ibook) so it still may forget my settings on restart, but since I usually only put it to sleep it works for now even if i still have to do the wizard only after restarts, which remains to be seen, heres how I did it (Its not my fault if you muck up your own system, try at your own risk) 1. I used a program called tinker tool (can be found at, www.apple.com the osx downloads section, versiontracker.com, tucows.com, etc.) to enable me to see hidden files, 2. I went to ~/library/preferences/.limeware (~ means your home dir) 3. I deleted the limeware.props directory (you may want to move it to say the desktop at first to see if it works on your system) 4. I started up limewire and it created a limeware.props FILE in that location and its been ok since, like I said I haven't restarted my mac yet though I alls read of someone trying to use limeware for multiple users with this problem, my install is in my home app dir but for multiy user installs I'd guess that you would have to apply this "fix" to each users home library dir, and possably create a .limeware dir in the system library dir. I dunno but its worth trying if you need multiple people to use it, I don't, so once again try it at your own risk, hope this helps someone btw machine/software ibook (late 2001) 600mhz 256mb ram os x 10.1.5 limeware 2.7.3 |
I found an answer for me! SORRY! I spelled limewire, limeware, for anyone that read that reply above please replace limeware with limewire, in all instances |
I just posted this as a bug on http://gui.limewire.org/project/www/bug.html. It took some patience, but I believe the bug has now been registered. I gave this url as a reference, so if you can, please provide specifics on the problem, your system, etc. For example, are you running multiple users? Did you start on an earlier version of OS X and then upgrade? I am on OS X 10.2.1, Started on X 10.0. I have had other users set up on this computer but currently am the only one configured. If anyone reading this thread does NOT encounter this problem, please chime in. Thanks. |
tried it all... imac 450 mhz...os x 10.2.1...9.2.2 i have tried every solution posted to circumvent the setup wizard problem to no avail...downloaded classic version of 2.7.3 and it too runs setup wizard every time i start up, whether booted into 9.2.2 or in classic...trashed prop file as suggested in another post, but no change... previous versions of limewire ran well on my machine...very frustrating... |
We're looking into this problem now. Apologies to everyone for the frustration. |
Are people also experiencing this issue on OS 9.x and below?? Thanks. |
I had this problem for saving prefs. on OSX till I discovered that closing windows with the upper left button solve my problem. When I was Quitting Limewire at the menu level it didn't saved prefs. Now I don't have problem because I deleted the version I had (all folder and invisible one in pref) and till that all installer of various version of LimeWire stall at tree quarter of the starting process. Till someone help me I will used other programms like Drumbeat, x-nap or Neo. |
I should posted a new beta that *should* fix this problem for OS X users. Let me know if it still gives you issues. You can get the pro download from your pro download page, and you can get the free download from: http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/download_beta |
The installer at the address you give, has the same problem: it stall at 2/3 of the install progress [=========| ]. May be it is related with the new security update and others affecting Java on OSX 10.2.1. |
I'm actually not at all sure what's happening with your particular install. The posted installed is intended to fix the topic of this thread -- settings not being saved between sessions. As for the separate installer issue, you should be able to find error files in your trash after the install fails. I'd be happy to take a look if you send them to afisk@limepeer.com. |
I had the same problem with an ibook 700 16 VRAM, First 9.2.2, then installed 10.2 and updated to 10.2.1 When I try the new Limewire pro beta I get the following Error massage either when I'm done with the setup at the start, or when I hit Apply after changing my preferences. /Applications/limeWire/xerces.jar LAST MODIFIED: 1036782373000 SIZE: 1646108 I have also mailed this massage to the bug center. |
This is only the trail end of the error. There's actually much more to the error message further up. Without that other information, there's not really much we can do. Thanks. |
OOps sorry about that, i didn't notice that. I've sent the whole error to the bugs center. It's the one from the hellblazer2 email address. If it'll make it easier to post it here just tell me. |
Actually, if you could post it here, that would be fantastic. We get so many e-mails that it's a bit of a pain to track down. Thanks! |

This is great -- thanks very much. Looks like we have a bug to fix!! I'm going to put out a 2.7.5 ASAP. Thanks again. |
thanks for your help afisk it's nice to know that someone is checking this out. i get the same error message with the new beta installer, and the setup wizard still shows up each startup... |
Setup wizard Just to jump on the bandwagen, I have the same problem with limewire, I have ox 10.2.1, my computer is just out of the box as of two days ago. The startup wizard runs each time I startup Limewire, no matter if I have restarted the computer or not. I have reinstalled several times and, I've noticed that I get two text files on my desktop after installing Limewire one called err.txt and the other called out.txt (this one is blank). The err.txt file is as follows: InstallerModeController: No lock file present. ... for me 2! I tried the procedure described in the posting "I found an answer for me!" above. Worked beautifully. LimeWire now holds its prefs and I can customize the way I want. The URL to the "Tinker Tool" mentioned is http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...inkertool.html I'm using 2.7.3 Pro with OS 10.2.1 |
I Found An Answer For Me! Part 2 Hi, I posted the "i found an answer for me" post, I got registered today, I'm glad to see that someone found the post helpful and found tinker tool on apples site. I saw a post by one chap that said he trashed a preferance file and it still didn't work, it's not a preference file your looking to delete, its a directory (folder in mac terms) that has the same name as the preference file that limewire needs to create, and because that directory is there it can't make the pref file. the exact name of the folder is, limewire.props its the folder you need to delete BUT its located in a hidden folder so you need tinker tool or the terminal to get to it, the limwire.props folder lives at this location ~~~> /users/(your home dir)/library/preferences/.limewire/limewire.props after I deleted it I have had smooth sailing, but once again try this work around at your own risk. Another thing I'm not using jag but the other mate that posted that it worked for him was (using 10.2) so all I can say is you might not have delete the right thing, hope this helps also someone asked for system vitals ibook 600mhz 256mb ram os x 10.1.5 (i got the ibook with 10.1 and gone through all updates to 10.1.5) limewire 2.7.3 (free version) any other system vitals just let me know, I do use a few system hacks (clear dock, diffrent startup panels, nothing that would affect limewire though) X |
yay! it does work! greetings running imac dv+ 450 mhz...jaguar...9.22...640mb finally had some time to try the tinkertool fix and it worked for me...restarted and everything...it remembered prefs. and it fixed the error message that has been previously posted.... seems like a minor fix on the developers end, but then i know nothing of developing! keep up the good work guys!!! |
setup wizard all the time The problem was solved by using Tinkertool, just select show hidden files, delete the limewire.props folder. Put it in the trash. reboot the finder. Start Limewire go through the wizard and you won't get the wizard again. What happens is that when you run it again it puts a file named limewire.props. Before there was just an empty folder. This is a mistake on Limewire's part. I'm using the Pro version $9.95 I thought it was an attempt to get us users to buy the Pro version. I sent in a bug report since I'm registered for the Pro Version. Wonder how the "Pro support is" |
We're working on a solution for an upcoming 2.7.5 beta. Thanks for all of the helpful information and comments! |
We've now released 2.7.5 in beta. We have not found a solution to the problem, but 2.7.5 adds more debugging output that will give us much more information in assessing what the problem is. If anyone has a chance to just run it once, that would be a big help. Thanks! |
I don't have the exact same problem. But every time I install a new version of LimeWire (which is quite often due to regular updates) I have to redo all my preferences. Why can't LimeWire keep the old settings of previous versions? |
We just released 2.7.6 with a fix for at least 1 major but regarding preferences. Basically, we put in a workaround to get around a bug in the 10.1, but the workaround broke things when the bug was fixed in 10.2. |
I Found An Answer For Me! Part 3 Hi again everyone, I was reading all the postings and one thing comes to mind for the developers end, and thats take the limewire.props dir out of the program install. you said mr. fisk that the work around that you guys developed worked in 10.1 but not 10.2. Ok I have 10.1 and others that have tried the work around I found have 10.2, sooo why not just take the directory out of the install. What does it do for the program? I haven't experienced any problems or anything, so what is its job, and why can't it be removedd from the offical distro? I'm just rather curious as I've only done work on much smaller and less complex programs. happy hunting |
Thanks for the input. I was a little unclear in my last post. What I meant was, a long time ago (say, LW 2.4.4), we put in code that worked around a bug in 10.1. It turns out that our workaround, however, created a problem in 10.2 where sometimes your settings would be saved, and sometimes they wouldn't. 2.7.6 fixes that problem. That said, I'm VERY curious about this "limewire.props directory." There should not be any directory called limewire.props, only a file called limewire.props. Where are you seeing this directory (I've heard rumors of this happening, but if you could tell me all the details, that would be great). Thanks very much. |
limewire.props we're all looking for you! /users/(your home dir)/library/preferences/.limewire/limewire.props this ^ is the location of the dir, I downloaded a copy of 2.7.3 my first copy of limewire ever and installed it. I kept having the lost preferences so I read all I could on the fourm and found a chap that tried to import he's old settings (from an earlier version) cause he was having the same problem so I started poking around where he said the preference stuff was. I started looking for the limewire.props file that was supposed to hold the prefs and found a dir by that name, sooo I deleted it, (i figured whats the worst thing that could happen, I'd have to reinstall? lol) and it solved the problem. thats pretty much how it happened, then I posted on the forum so others could benefit from my old school dos-style recklessness, forget file permissions delete now ask questions later lol. X |
do you think it could be the installer that's creating the directory? try uninstalling limewire (not sure if mac's have a way of uninstalling programs), deleting the .limewire folder from your preferences, and then reinstalling. see if afterwards a limewire.props directory is made, instead of a limewire.props file. or if it does make the file, try restarting and seeing if it's somehow converted to a folder. or if nothing even is made there, try starting limewire the first time and keep an eye on the .limewire folder, seeing what's added to it -- a folder or a file. etc... |
It is clear: limewire.props is a file in the directory .limewire. |
sberlin and recherchemp3, hi I'm not too concerned with how or why that folder is created, I was just posting those questions & answers to mr. fisk, one of the developers thats helping to sort this thing out from the development end. If you came here looking for a solution because your having this forgetfulness in your limewire app, look back in the posts for a post titled "I found an answer for me!!" I posted it before I registered, it describes a fix for osx users. A few people posted it worked when they tryed it and one said it didn't, so try at your own risk, but it worked for me. I dunno are you both using osx 10.1.5/10.2 or another os? maybe its just a problem when they compile the program for the mac. anyway the fix basicly is you delete the directory named limewire.props so the program can make its prefs file named limewire.props I don't know what the folder does other then mess up the apps ability to remember the prefs, I deleted it and now my app works fine. It remembers all prefs and seems to have no side effects. My guess is that someone had a compiler option checked that shouldn't have been or they were supposed to have the limewire.props file in a directory named limewire.props but forgot to change the bit of source code that writes/access the limewire.props file to reflect the new prefs storage scheme, those are just my guesses though, an app like limewire is way out of my league but maybe my ideas are some things the developers can check on or at least maybe it will help them to look at the problem from a diffrent angle, more eyes are always better to see things with. oh and if your questions and ideas were also directed to our developer friends and not ideas/answers to my last post please ignore all my chatter, I just assumed you guys/girls thought I was confused and were trying to help me sort out my limewire, well I am confused but my app works good. but thanks either way for speaking up to help (me or the developers). X |
my question was an attempt to pin down exactly where the problem is. in order for adam to fix it, he needs to know what's causing it. if you can find out exactly when it is that the folder is created (in the installer, in the program itself, etc..), then that's a really big step in solving it. |
props directory/folder After installing OS 10.2, I had these same problem with the setup wizard and losing all my preferences once every two or three times that I opened LimeWire. After reading the solution described above, I removed the questionable directory/folder using my tinkertool and was able to use LW for several days without experiencing any problems. Today, however, when I opened LimeWire, there was the setup wizard again. Shoot! Masa |
Masa? Masa, are you using limewire from the same account all the time? X |
reply from Masa Yes, I only have it installed in one account. There is another user but it is not installed on that account. Do you think downloading the new 6.7.7 version will solve it? |
Masa Sorry, I meant 2.7.7 |
2.7.7 fixes i have been using limewire since the preference problem appeared and used the tinkertool fix way back on version 2.7.4 (or so, lol)...since then with each new update, i have used the setupwizard once and it is keeping my prefs. i don't know if that is because the folder is not being recreated or if the new version has fixed it... |
