Running Mac 10.1.5.

Downloaded, Installed LW English OSX version.

Stalls at startup: "Loading core components..."

I've seen other posts on this topic, but no fixes. Is there any way to resolve this problem? What gives?

hanging on core components

ok i've found a way round this problem..its long winded so bear with me..download the english only version from the limewire site which will bounce you to download.com ..i tried this and it refused to download so i clicked on the " click here if your download doesn't start " button which gave me an alternative download site..left clicking this gave me a screen of code rubbish but right clicking and choosing the "save document as " option gave me a .dmg version of limewire 3.5.8 which installed and runs fine..well it seems to so far anyway...be warned that it still seems to take a long time to load the core components bit but so long as you dont get the ball of death thing [ i'm using 10.1.5] then you should be ok

Internet Explorer has troubles with .dmg files--sometimes the cache has to be cleared too before a clean installer can be downloaded fresh. Has anyone tried by using Safari, or downloading Jens-Uwe Mager's pro-like version of LW 3.5.8 (http://baghira.han.de/~jum/LimeWire.html)?
I wonder too if anyone has seen anything odd in the Console (Applications->Utilities) logs when the problem occurs. If so, you can let the LW developers know by mailing the relevant entries to bugs@limewire.com, or post them here and hope a coder can interpret them.

I'm on 10.2.6, so sorry if I can't help more. OS 10.1.5 got the new java update too, right? If this would help, I dropped the OSX basic installer for the pre-java update version (3.4.6) onto the public folder of my iDisk. You're welcome to grab it as a back-up. Choose Connect To Server from the Finder's Go menu and type http://idisk.mac.com/stief4-Public (doesn't work as a link--you have to paste or type it into the Connect window)

Cheers. Glad you got it working gizmatron.

[edit: here's the link to the other thread on this problem http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=21807

previous versions of LW are available at
http://www3.limewire.com/download/
http://www9.limewire.com:82/download/
(each version is a collection of all the installers for that version--it's a 60 mb download)]

re 10.2

hiya steif...i have another problem now..the limewire works fine so i downloaded the dmg of 10.2 as i'm currently using 10.1.5 ....it wont mount using the disc copy in 10.1.5....i had this problem before when a friend sent me 10.1 as a disc image on a cd and of course it wouldn't mount in 9.2.1 as he had created it using 10.1 disc copy...i think this is the same problem..if so many thanks to the 100 or so people who have the 10.2 install in a format you can only mount if you alrteady have 10.2...i know sarcasm is the lowest form of wit but there you go....can you mail me a copy of the 10.2 disc copy [ giz77@free.fr ] or post it somewhere so i can download it..not sure if i will be able to get around the problem like that but i think so...assuming it isn't just a corrupt download of course..

stief September 25th, 2003 04:24 AM

giz--the last thing you want to fiddle with is your OS! I recall (months ago) some people complaining that the "10.2" turned out to be a porn flick or the pre-release version. Looks like some people need to inspect their shared folders. You could try chatting with those folks and finding out if the .dmg's really do work. Frankly though, I wouldn't risk it.

There might be a Disk Copy 10.2.3 in my idisk that you could look at, but I doubt that will help. Glad to hear that LW is worlking well for you.
À votre santé.

gizmatron September 25th, 2003 01:03 PM

thanks

thanks for the help stief...the disc copy on your idisk wont run on my os..i guess you need 10.2 to run it so i am in the same place i started..yeh i tried the chat but none of the people sharing 10.2 seem to be on chat so far..i am willing to bet that they installed the 10.2 before they created the disc image though which is why its no use to me...apple seem to change the disc copy each time they update it so that older versions never mount images created with newer versions...bummer..its not like there are loads of different downloads of the .dmg.....there are usually just the two..disc 1 and disc 2 with about 30 - 50 people listed for each..on limewire anyway...was going to try acquisition after i was having loads of problems with the limewire but 10.2 needed minimum...which is what prompted this saga to start in the first place..oh well..watch this space

ps

ps .... i have a spare hard drive so was going to try the .dmg on that anyway before i mess with my working 10.1.5 disc

bye

Otto September 25th, 2003 05:56 PM

10.2 .dmg won't mount.

I had the same proble with the 10.2 disk image not mounting. Panther is not far away and I didn't want to spend more $'s. It's a total drag.

looprevil September 26th, 2003 06:55 AM

Hi there. Running OS X.1.5 and was happily using LW3.5.7 Pro. Notice to update, which I duly did. Alas, same problems as everyone else. Loading Core Components... doesn't, er, load.

Can't access the MacFixit article link that Steief posted in another thread either.

sberlin September 26th, 2003 07:24 AM

You updated from 3.5.7 to 3.5.8 and it stopped working? Sure you don't mean 3.4.something to 3.5.8?

looprevil September 26th, 2003 07:51 AM

You know, you got me thinking now... 3.5.8 Pro has replaced the previous Pro download I made... it was the last Pro update we were automatically offered... how irritating and embarrassing in equal measure... Sherlock isn't being much help either...

Anyhow, 3.5.8 Pro cannot get past Loading Core Components.

:o

sberlin September 26th, 2003 07:55 AM

Could you try downloading 3.5.8 again and see if it works any better? We changed the configuration of the webserver so it can handle DMG files a little better when people are using Internet Explorer, and this might have a side effect that may fix some possibly corrupt downloads.

You could also try the 3.6.0 beta.

Thanks.

looprevil September 26th, 2003 08:51 AM

Tried 3.5.8 again. Downloaded almost instantly. Dragged to Applications folder on H.D. and tried opening it up. Got as far as Loading Core Components... eventually the beachball showed up and I Forced Quit.

Tried the beta app. 3.6.0. Took a while to d/l. Dragged to Applications folder on H.D. and tried opening it up. Got as far as Loading Core Components... eventually the beachball showed up and I Forced Quit.

sberlin September 26th, 2003 09:07 AM

Just to make sure it's not a DMG issue, can you try using the international installer instead?

Sorry about the problems, but thanks very much for helping us root out the causes.

looprevil September 26th, 2003 09:17 AM

Okay. Back in a few mins.

looprevil September 26th, 2003 09:26 AM

Alas, no difference at all. Gets as far as Loading Core Components...

... and no further.

No probs helping out where I can, btw.

looprevil September 26th, 2003 09:28 AM

Actually, would you like the err.txt? If so, where would you like me to send it?

sberlin September 26th, 2003 09:37 AM

Sure, the err.txt file could be useful (along with any other possible output). You can email to sberlin [at] limepeer.com.

Thanks.

a temporary fix....

Hi,
Dear OS X.1.5 Users - sorry for the inconvenience. We aren't sure what is going on, but we are working on a fix. In the meantime, this is what I do to get a stalled LimeWire to come up. I open up my IE 5.1 application and just browse around. I know it sounds idiotic but I've made it work a couple times. Hopefully that works for the rest of you too.

Thanks!

Now it's a funny ol' world, to coin a phrase. I had one final, resigned attempt at opening up 3.5.8 about 4 or so hours after I downloaded the thing. I double-clicked on the alias I'd sent to the Dock and Lo! and Behold! It fired up. Connects to the network just fine, downloads and has no problems with iTunes either.

Wha...?

looprevil September 27th, 2003 06:55 AM

Naturally, I can't get it to open up again today.

sdaswani September 29th, 2003 07:12 AM

What version of Java are you using?

I was wondering if everyone who is having this problem could tell me what version of Java they have? We are investigating the issue and we think the bug may have been resolved with the latest Java 1.3.1 Update for 10.1.x. That would be Java 1.3.1 Update 1.

Thanks!

looprevil September 29th, 2003 11:42 AM

Java 1.3.1 Update 1 - 03/05/02 says my installation log.

I waggled around my cursor while LW 3.5.8 was firing up, avoided the dreaded beach ball and the damn thing opened up again! That seems to have been a one-off as I can't get any kind of consistant opening method going. Waggling about my mouse is surely not the way forward.

I hope this stuff is helping.

sdaswani September 29th, 2003 11:44 AM

yeah, the mouse waggling is pure luck....

yeah, i tried the mouse waggling this morning to no avail. i'm currently integrating a patch that should hopefully fix the issue for all future versions. very sorry for the inconvenience folks....

looprevil September 29th, 2003 11:54 AM

Cool. I'm sure it can be fixed. Let us know as soon as you need us to test it out.

stief September 29th, 2003 12:03 PM

Thanks Susheel--glad you're on it. I'll remove the old LimeWireOSX3.4.6.zip installer from my iDisk now.

sdaswani September 29th, 2003 03:23 PM

LimeWire 3.6.1 Soon Available

Hi folks,
If you download the beta release 3.6.1 the hanging issue should be fixed. Please let me know if you experience the same issue with build 3.6.1.

Thanks!

Limewire 3.5.7(?) .8(?)

i have had the ball of death too whilst loading components. i am running 10.1.5.

however i have been sucessful in booting LW by hovering the mouse over the word Limewire in the menu bar before it displays ‘loading components’, you can even click on the menu too! I found this works and 3.5.7 (or should that be .8?) is pretty good once its running, even on a 56kbps modem.

hope this is a help to other hanging users

Richard

Pretty MeNtAl way of doing business! So, er, where do I find the new beta download then :o ?

sberlin October 1st, 2003 06:29 PM

Go to the download page, scroll towards the bottom, and click the button that mentions the beta.

y2gray October 3rd, 2003 02:20 PM

Had the same problem as everyone else. Tried 3.6.1 Beta and the first time around it worked (although it came up with an error straight away). Now it doesn't want to know. Stalls on core components again.

sberlin October 3rd, 2003 02:58 PM

Do you know what error came up the first time, y2gray?

Thanks.

pp-99 October 3rd, 2003 05:21 PM

beta 3-6-1

got the same problem
international Version (German)
Tryed 3.6.1 now
it's still freezing.
Can you help? If you answer, use easy english please, cause my english is rotten :-)) Thanks
Don't knoe how I can sent you an E-Mail.
I still got the first err.txt from installing 3.6.1

y2gray October 5th, 2003 11:39 AM

sorry sberlin havn't a clue what error came up.

Any chance it's more than a coincidence that version 3.6.1 worked after I'd used a version that does work, but when I start it from cold it doesn't want to know?

doubledark December 2nd, 2003 05:16 AM

I posted this http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=22715

After many frustrating days of trashing, re-loading and re-launching I solved my problem (which seems to be similar to what others are experiencing)

i trashed the "incomplete" folder and everything worked. Hope this helps someone else.
