Oh ok. I opened the console and ran the Limewire installer. This is what printed in the console during the install. Quote:
Does the above technobabble mean anything to anyone? |
PS: Here is a log of my system updates. Java 1.4.1 isn't listed because I installed it manually instead of through the system updater. Quote:

In reference to your original thread 'It worked - then it ceased. Error -600 sometimes' Processes Errors -600 procNotFound No eligible process with specified process serial number This might help SBerlin & team. I wonder if the Jum build will suffer the same issue. It did for another person who was/is having a slightly similar issue ( Limewire bouncing icon will not connect ) |
Hey, thanks for the link! :) :) The Jum build completely solved the problem! |
update: Everything continues to run very well now. The Jum build is working perfectly, giving my shared files "Turbo" sharing quality. The "official" Limewire build still doesn't work for me - strange that it once did but now refuses to launch. Merry Christmas! |
We'll take a look at what might be different between Jens-Uwe's bundle and ours. Thanks for letting us know you were able to get it working. Hopefully we can make it so that it'll work with our build. :) |
Bouncing icon and disappearing I took sberlin's advice and it worked. THANKS!!!: Repairing an Incomplete Java Installation For systems fitting the symptoms described in the first section of this technical note, the problem can be corrected with a manual fix requiring an administrator-level account. From the Finder, navigate to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/ Move the version.plist file to the Trash. An authentication dialog may appear. Enter an administrator username and password. Confirm that the version.plist is no longer in /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/. Insert the Mac OS X v10.3 Install Disc 1 CD. If a new Finder window opens presenting the installer, close it. Open a new Finder window Navigate to Mac OS X Install Disc 1/System/Installation/Packages/ and double-click the file called Java.pkg. Follow the instructions on the installer. Following these steps should force an installation of the proper Java version onto the system, restoring proper behavior. This can be confirmed with the Terminal test described above. You may still notice the HotSpot not at correct virtual address. Sharing disabled. message after performing these steps, which should disappear after rebooting. If you have installed the "Security Update 2003-10-28" before following these steps you will additionally need to reinstall that update, as the Java package on the CD precedes it: Open a new Finder window Navigate to /Library/Receipts Move SecurityUpd2003-10-28.pkg to the Trash. Run Software Update and re-download "Security Update 2003-10-28" |
limewire still won't open I have tried all the fixes suggested in this forum, and Limewire still won't open . Everything was fine until the OS10.3.6 update. I had been tempted to go pro right before this happened, and I am glad I didn't. I have the latest Limewire installed 4.2.6 Time to give up.http://www.gnutellaforums.com/newrep...hreadid=22447# |
|
bouncing icon - limewire won't load what seems to be the best method for fixing this problem then? i'm not too OS savy when it comes to fixing things.... running OSX 10.3.7 on powerbook G4 1.33GHz w limewire 4.2.6. worked fine until upgraded to 10.3.7 thanks for any help! |
bouncing icon I think there is no simple answer. I tried a few of the suggestions, and got stymied on the reinstalling java. Don't know where to find that and I refuse to reinstall Panther. It is ridiculous that a user should be compelled to perform technical sommersaults in order to use a program. We are not all techie geniuses. If the bug is Apple's fault, and Gnutella programmers can't figure a way around it, then...oh well, goodbye to Limewire for the Mac. It was fun while it lasted. |
Goodbye coolgranny glad you enjoyed it whilst it lasted. I've used LW for several years but not had these issues. So ... why are you having these problems. It doesn't matter now does it! Updating over the internet has been known to have problems. That is why we suggest people use the standalone installers. Everything is contained within the installer & not installed over the net where anything might have happened to that data. Particularly if the person was impatient & used the net or their computer for other purposes simultaneously. The Java standalone is here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...update142.html Glad to see you were 'patient enough' to search for it. It is listed (or links to it) more than once in this thread alone. doh :p |
Bouncing icon Thanks! Downloading the java installer worked. Hurray. I just need a push in the right direction. |
Downloading and installing the standalone Java update Java142update2 fixed the issue for me - thanks everyone! |
Can't find <string>prelude<string> I did everything as you said... but in text edit i couldn't find the line with string prelude string... is prelude what is says or is it just a space??? i do have Lime wire Pro 4.0.8... is there no way i can download and updated version, or must i pay extra??? Thanks... Devon |
Devon: You didn't specify which OSX version you're running. If you're running OS 10.2 or later did you install Java using the Standalone Java installer as suggested? http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...update142.html If that doesn't work, go to icon bouncing in dock & try the Jum build (suggestion no.8.) It's based on the Pro version. |
Limewire only works in new account... I am running 10.3.8 and have not been able to open Limewire. I set up another account and it works. So there must be something in my setting that has changed, does anyone know what it might be? |
Hi Dickybran LOTR asked me to suggest some ideas, so here they are (nice clear post btw--thanks). The most likely suspects in the original account would be a corrupted installer (clearing the Safari cache would be the best bet here before downloading a new installer) or the LimeWire folder inside the Home/Library/Preferences folder. Move any installlers and the LW Prefs folder somewhere else and try again to see if they are the culprits. If not, then the other less likely files would be any LW Dock icon(drag off dock to "pouff" it) or the Install LimeWire.pkg file in the hard drive's Library/Receipts folder. If neither of these fix the original home account's LW install, then you'd have to look for another java application that is interfering. Cheers--let us know what you find. |
Reply for Stief... Hi Stief, thanks for the advice. I tried most of what you said but still no joy. I found some of what you said a bit difficult to understand, so I'm not sure I did the right things. I tried deleting everything LW related, but I know there are always lots of LW files spread out over the system, so I might not have removed them all. I cleared the Safari cache and downloaded LW again, but still no luck. Could you tell me exactly which files/folders and where they are please? I really appreciate your help! Rich |
Hi Rich--sorry for the confusion. Was the "Library" part the problem? (OS X creates a Library for each account, plus has a master Library that you can see when you double click the hard drive). So you have at least three Libraries on your machine. Lets call them master, Rich, and Richnewadmin. LW is OK in Richnewadmin, so leave that Library alone. The master Library contains the Receipts folder, and is the only one which has the file called "Install LimeWire.pkg" . You can delete this file. When logged into the Rich account, use the Go menu to choose the Home acount. Find the Library here, open it to see the Preferences folder, then trash the LimeWire folder you find there. You should also see a "com.limegroup.gnutella.plist" file. Go ahead and trash that too. Use the Go menu to open the Applications folder, and drag the LimeWire folder to the trash too. You *might* get a warning message to "Authenticate" (since it was probably installed under the "Richnewadmin" account). Go ahead and enter the password if required. So, with no other installers lying around, you should be ready for a clean install again. If LW still won't install in the "Rich" account, then you can be pretty sure there's something besides LimeWire in the "Rich" account that's causing the problem use my PM button if this is still unclear, but do keep us posted on what you find. Cheers |
Limewire with OS 10.3.8 I had the same problems as most people, but with 10.3.8, Java 1.4.2 doesn't fix it, you'll need to download Java for Panther: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/java.html Follow Stief's instructions listed above for deleting Limewire, download and install the Java for Panther, then re-install Limewire. Fixed my problems, hope that helps. Ralph |
can you link to a pc if your a mac osx I want to link to a friends shared folder. He has a pc and i have a g4 powerbook. We cant seem to find any of each others stuff on limewire search even when we make up rediculous names for our files. How can we directly link up using limewire? |
Make sure neither of your are firewalled!!! See: Direct Connect & make sure you both have incoming; see this test: Do this test after LW's been open at least 30 mins: Bug Report instructions & sample image If it's True then that's good, if it's false then somewhre there's a firewall. |
Mac 10.3.8 I recently upgraded to the above version and Limewire does not work, is there an update for this. I looked at the directions for the 'prelude" but it was correct. Please help. |
After the above, LW still fails to load Hi - I'm running OSX 10.3.8 with JavaPantherUpdate 1.4.1 and did a fresh install of Limewire 4.8.1 Basic per the above instructions. Can anyone figure out what's wrong from the crash report? BTW, I had an earlier version of LW Pro (4.0.5) which did the same thing, so I replaced it with the latest version of LW Basic thinking that might cure the problem. Still got bounce and gone syndrome. Could Apple's OSX security updates have anything to do with the problem? That's the only system change between LW working and not working that I can think of. I can't deciphor the report for you but can make some suggestions about probable fixes. Whenever there's a new apple update there's always an influx of these types of problems. It seems to be related to updating mac os over the net. 1. SAFE Boot & Repair Permissions 2. Try this Java here: icon bouncing in Dock (click on link) This requently fixes this problem. If not a combo update will normally do it. By the way if it says your Java is already up to date then double-click the harddrive icon, open the Library, open the Receipts folder, then find the file: Java142Update2.pkg, delete it and try again. eg image: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...159#post126159 |
"Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001) Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS" means the problem is outside LimeWire. So it's a java or an OS X problem, usuallly fixed by the safe boot first, or reinstalling java. The key information the coders need is the "Exception . . . " and then the details for the thread that crashed. I think. ;) |
Still trying Thank you for your suggestions. So far, no luck. Following one of the poster's suggestions, I went back to an earlier version of Java (1.4.1) Since the problem occured with Java 1.4.2 ver.2. Below is the thread that crashed (from the crash log). As far as a conspiracy theory goes, how about the latest version of iTunes deliberately causing the problem to prevent free music downloads? Thank you for your kind assistance. |
Finally! After downloading the jum CVS build of LW and getting the same bounce and crash, I figured that my Java 1.4.1 installation might be incomplete, even though I had downloaded the installer from Apple's web site. So, I removed the version.plist file per the instructions below, and reinstalled Java. Finally, LW worked! --------------------- Repairing an Incomplete Java Installation: The problem can be corrected with a manual fix requiring an administrator-level account. From the Finder, navigate to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/ and open the folder. Move the version.plist file to the Trash. An authentication dialog may appear. Enter an administrator username and password. Confirm that the version.plist is no longer in /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/. Download the complete Java package from Apple's web site (not a software update) Follow the instructions of the installer. --------------------- LW jum starts and runs OK, though it resists my efforts when I try closing the LW window. I can live with that.... My question now is, do I dare try to update to the 1.4.2 Update 2 version of Java, or should I just leave well enough alone? Thank you for all your help. |
LW is designed with Java 1.4.2 & gives better performance ... so I'd suggest it would be a good idea to update. Probably not too far in the future apple will update to Java 1.5. But who knows. lol Glad to hear you solved the problem. Stief's very good to helping to solve these types of issues! ;) |

Someone else on the forum is trialling the same concept to see if uninstalling iTunes makes a difference to results. They're using windows. Will wait & see. ;) Update on that ... does seem to have an effect for them (Fabion.) Once uninstalling iTunes & restarting LW their audio search results improved dramatically. A note from rkapsi on this topic: "iTunes is definitely not blocking LimeWire from sharing (I mean up- and downloading) files. That would either mean there is a rudimentary Gnutella implementation in iTunes. A protocol analyzer like Ethereal (www.ethereal.com) would uncover such a component immediately. Or iTunes is using a similar technique like Virus scanners but that would break with every new LimeWire version. And music files bought from the iTunes Music Store are DRM protected. LimeWire doesn't share them anyway out-of-the-box - the .m4p extension is not the shared files list." |
Follow-up Updated to Java 1.4.2 update 2 without problems, and now the LW jum build runs smoothly. Thanks for all your help! BTW, is there any value in retaining the Unix executables that were in the Limewire folder from an installation of the previous version of LW - "COPYING" and "SOURCE"? |

If it's 4.8.1, open the Terminal (in your Utilities Folder) and type java -version (there's a space between "java" and the dash). What happens? If you get an error, your java was pooched by the latest update. To fix, see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36574 |
Please help I'm using Mac OSX 10.3.9 and limewire 4.8 on a G5. For some reason LW just stopped working. The icon bounces in dock then disappear. My java seems ok, well i think. I have tried to delete LW and re-download for cnet, but no chage. All my updates are in date. Please Help! |

same problem hi guys if anyone has a sec could they help limewire bounces and then disappears as with the others i have my installation disk but do i need to restart the comp and install it again to get to that folder with the BS.... ? thanks sophie |
I think I'm having a similar problem but the symptoms are more specific if anybody can help. I connected to Limewire without any problems this morning and soon after installed the latest OSX software update (I'm up to 10.3.9) Now I have the bouncing icon and nothing happens. Limewire opens fine on my Powerbook which has not had a recent software update. Is this all part of the same problem that you are discussing? Thanking you in advance. Tim |

I actually got limewire working the first time I downloaded it, and I was able to download some songs and stuff. Afterwards, I updated the operating system on the mac and had to restart it. After I rebooted it and had installed all the stuff, limewire would only bounce in the dock and disappear. I tried the thing with the control clicks and everything, but there was no line in text edit the said <string>prelude</string> so I couldn't change anything. I tried removing all the files from my computer and then I installed limewire again, but it still doesn't work. Oh, and I also installed a new java thing while limewire wasn't working. I hope you can help, thanks. |
Ian* did you install http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...acosx1039.html If so, check LOTR's links about general OSX troubleshooting, especially the one about Safe Boot http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393 |
bounces and dissapears yer all the solutions on here r 4 panther or sumtin but i got tiger and its not opening! same as all the others it just bounces then disappears and ive tried everything uve told every1 else 2 do and it still wnt work! please help! |
Reinstalling Java offline installer & repairing permissions is usually the way to go for Tiger. |
Offline installer where do i go 2 get the offline installer? |
At apple. Try this one http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...lease4ppc.html "IF" you have a ppc mac. But if you have the new intell mac then use this one http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...ase4intel.html If it won't let you reinstall it, go to the Receipts folder & remove the previous last Java update. Receipts folder sample image Scroll down to see the Tiger equivalent. Remove only J2SE50Release4.pkg Remember to do a safe boot & repair permissions after installing. ;) |
Java not working i installed Java131and142Release2.pkg this morning and just then i downloaded J2SE5Release4.pkg and its till not opening! ive had it up and running before and downloaded lots of songs and then my computer got all its programs reinstalled by apple and wen i got it bak it didnt work! it might be irrelevent but i thought i should tell anyway |
Are you running Java 1.5 or 1.4? Go to the Utilities folder & open the Java > J2SE 5.0 > Preferences & make sure Java 1.5 is selected. It's described here Setting up Java 1.5 You could also try deleting your LW prefs folder found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire But that would mean you'd need to reset all your LW options if you can open it. |
Not installed I did wat u sed and went to java preferences but it sed Could not launch the application because it requires a version of Java that is not installed. This application requires Java 1.5, but only the following Java versions are installed: 1.4.2, 1.3.1, 1.3, 1.4. Updating to a newer version of Mac OS X may resolve this. I also deleted the limewire folder. |
