LimeWire Bounces In Dock and Disappears? Look Here!

[EDIT] 3.6.15 is live and will automatically take care of these situations for you. [END EDIT]

This will happen if you first installed 10.0, then upgraded to 10.2 without installing some specific packages. We are in the process of revising our installer to fix this (and some other) issues. In the meantime, you can continue running LimeWire one of two ways.

The best way, if you still have the OS X installation CDs is to pop the first CD in and navigate to:
Mac OS X Install Disc 1 -> System -> Installation -> Packages -> BSD.pkg
and double-click to install that package.

Alternatively, you can go to /Applications/LimeWire, ctrl-click on the LimeWire application, choose 'Show Package Contents', open on the 'Contents' folders, ctrl-click on the 'Info.plist' file, choose 'Open With', choose 'Other', scroll down on the right and choose 'TextEdit". Within TextEdit, find the line that reads "<string>prelude</string>" and change it to "<string>LimeWire</string>". Save the file, close TextEdit.

After you've done either procedure, LimeWire should open as normal. We'll be releasing a new installer soon so that all this isn't necessary if the user didn't have BSD installed, but for the existing installations these steps are required.

Thanks,
Sam

Followed your instructions, still doesn't work

I followed your instructions and LimeWire still won't launch. It just bounces in the dock and then nothing happens.

First I installed the BSD package and that didn't fix it. Then I altered the line in the Info file and that didn't fix it either.

I'm running Panther on 1.5Ghz Powerbook.

Please help. Thanks!

sberlin November 11th, 2003 03:01 PM

Hi djscoobyd,

Could you please open the 'Console' program (found by going to Applications -> Utilities -> Console), try running LimeWire again, and paste back here what is reported in the Console?

Thanks,
Sam

djscoobyd November 11th, 2003 03:08 PM

Here is what it says:

Hi again djscoobyd,

You received this error with the latest installers (3.6.14 or 3.6.15)? To be honest, I have absolutely no clue what would cause this. It looks like a borked Java. Have you by chance updated Panther to 10.3.1?

Thanks,
Sam

djscoobyd November 11th, 2003 04:17 PM

I just downloaded the LimeWire upgrade again off of CNET, so it's definitely 3.6.15

Still having the same problem.

And my Panther is up to date. Version 10.3.1

sberlin November 11th, 2003 05:16 PM

Is anyone else experiencing problems similiar to this (with the same console log)?

While I cannot be sure it will fix it, I recommend that you follow the steps Apple has outlined at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2002/tn2099.html to fix a faulty Java installation during a Panther upgrade.

Sorry for the trouble, I'll continue looking to see if I find something that mentions this error.

djscoobyd November 11th, 2003 08:53 PM

That fixed it! Anyone having the same problem should follow the instructions for reinstalling java on the apple site.

Thanks for your help!

flameboy6600 November 21st, 2003 05:59 PM

Yeah... i went to the apple website thing
my java is fine but limewire still doesn't work... and I did the thing you guys said before. I have no idea why, I installed limewire 3.6.14 and it worked but the new one is not working for me...

flameboy6600 November 21st, 2003 06:45 PM

Actually I managed to fix it with the alternate method (installing the package from the mac os x cd.) Thanks for the help!

gravitE November 30th, 2003 07:23 AM

OSX Jaguar disc??

when you say to install the BSD file from the OSX disc do you mean the OSX JAGUAR disc or the Panther OSX disc?

I have tried both methods posted on this forum. None of them worked.

I'm running panther 10.3.1 and I'm about to give up on this program. Now everyone is saying Limewire 3.14 will work????

ugh.

same here

I'm having the same problem. I tried the above mentioned fixes. Everything else I do on the mac works. I can use poisoned, but I like Limewire better.

--catman

any suggestions?

is 3.6.14 available?

mourogers December 17th, 2003 05:58 AM

this may help

Having the same problem-bouncing in dock followed by nothing ... Java fixes not working - termanal says:

/Applications/LimeWire/LimeWire.app/Contents/MacOS/prelude: line 1: dirname: command not found
/Applications/LimeWire/LimeWire.app/Contents/MacOS/prelude: line 19: /LimeWire: No such file or directory
/Applications/LimeWire/LimeWire.app/Contents/MacOS/prelude: line 19: exec: /LimeWire: cannot execute: No such file or directory

Showing the contents of Limewire.app and manually launching "Limewire.app:MacOS:Limewire" (i.e. the Unix Executable file) seems to work, albeit with some interface redrawing issues that may or may not be related to this issue.

Hope this is some help..

chris h. December 17th, 2003 12:39 PM

i got limewire to work agian, here's what i did.
on the panther intall disk 1, open the folder called optional installs and intall BSD.pkg. that's all i had to do and everthing worked fine.

Mike123 January 23rd, 2004 05:17 PM

Yup, Limewire did not work on MacOS 10.3.2 .... until I did this:

http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2002/tn2099.html

Thanks!

CTO January 26th, 2004 11:17 AM

I've got it all - Limewire 3.6.15, Java 1.4.1, Panther 10.3.2 - Limewire actually opens, but then crashes. The Crashreport says something about a Bus error.

Crashreport:

An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.

Any help?

sberlin January 26th, 2004 11:27 AM

Use the latest 3.7.9 beta, available from the beta link on the download page. If there is a bus error running Java, it should give you instructions after the installation finishes about how to fix the problem.

CTO January 26th, 2004 02:34 PM

I installed 3.7.9 but it still does the same thing.

System Log:

Jan 26 23:25:39 localhost /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framework/Support/ATSServer: FOExceptionMainHandler caught a fatal exception at 0x0000f314

Console doesn't say anything this time.

CTO January 26th, 2004 02:37 PM

i just remembered, I had a similar problem with Entourage a week ago. I erased the preferences folder and that did it, but that doesn't work for Limewire.

sberlin January 26th, 2004 02:45 PM

Thanks for the update, CTO.

Can you try installing the Java package here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/java.html .

Apple has recently had a rash of problems with Java support, so it may just have been a faulty installation.

Thanks,
Sam

CTO January 26th, 2004 04:02 PM

I will try that out right away. Thank you, too.

I only have a 128k internet connection so since it will take a while I shall post again here tomorrow. (I'm in Germany)

Thanks!

Claas

CTO January 27th, 2004 06:04 AM

That didn't fix it either.
Terminal still says it's a bus error.
The system and console logs also say the same.
Could it be anything outside the OS or Limewire itself?

sberlin January 27th, 2004 08:15 AM

Hmmm.

Sorry for the problems. How soon after opening LimeWire does it crash? Do you do anything (such as clicking on the menu or the program) before it crashes?

Try opening the file <home>/Library/Preferences/LimeWire/limewire.props and adding the line:
SHOW_TOTD=false

Let us know how it goes .... Thanks.

CTO January 29th, 2004 01:13 PM

Ok, I added the line and then tried it out a couple of times. It now only crashes when I klick "Later" in the "Upgrade to Pro" window. Otherwise it opens as it should.

Console:

2004-01-29 22:05:04.534 LimeWire[744] Java couldn't paint in Java_apple_awt_CRenderer_doRect, no focused view.

System:

Jan 29 22:04:56 localhost /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framework/Support/ATSServer: FOExceptionMainHandler caught a fatal exception at 0x0000f314
Jan 29 22:04:56 localhost /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framework/Support/ATSServer: ATSServer got a fatal exception!! Please check /var/tmp/ATSServer_233.
(This is repeated four times)

sberlin January 29th, 2004 01:19 PM

Thanks for the update, CTO. You said, "It now only crashes when I click Later..." -- does that mean it used to crash immediately (ie, before anything even appeared on the screen, or stuff did appear but you were unable to click anything)? What happens if you click to do the upgrade?

CTO January 29th, 2004 05:29 PM

Usually it used to crash maybe 10 seconds after the main window and the Upgrade window were visible. During this time I clicked away the Upgrade window and I could start writing something I wanted to search for. But as soon as I hit reurn or clicked on Connections or Monitor it crashed.
If I click to do the upgrade it changes nothing, it didn't change anything before either.

sberlin January 29th, 2004 05:37 PM

Hi CTO,

Could you email me at sberlin@limepeer.com please? I'm going to add some logging statements into the code to see if we can track down what's causing the crash.

Thanks,
Sam

Having the same problem-bouncing in dock followed by nothing ... Java fixes not working, neither does altering the plist - terminal says:

/Applications/LimeWire/LimeWire.app/Contents/MacOS/prelude: line 1: dirname: command not found
/Applications/LimeWire/LimeWire.app/Contents/MacOS/prelude: line 19: /LimeWire: No such file or directory
/Applications/LimeWire/LimeWire.app/Contents/MacOS/prelude: line 19: exec: /LimeWire: cannot execute: No such file or directory

tried showing the contents of Limewire.app and manually launching "Limewire.app:MacOS:Limewire" per the advice of previous posting.

is there a fix to run limewire normally?

sberlin February 3rd, 2004 10:07 AM

Download the latest beta, 3.7.11, available from the beta link at the download page. It will solve this particular problem.

Hi there.

Same application failing to start up problem, with icon bouncing on dock...

Recently updated panther 10.3.1 to 10.3.4.

On attempting to start limewire Pro, console outputs:

dyld: /Applications/LimeWire/LimeWire.app/Contents/MacOS/LimeWire can't open library: /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/JavaVM (Permission denied, errno = 13

Checked the application's info (apple+i) and my permissions look fine (read+write).

Does anyone have any clues on this.

Am currently downloading the apple update.

For any Mac OSX users out there, if the earlier points made by sberlin don't solve things, try one of the suggestions on the following thread: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=26699

These are problem solving methods for OSX, at least one of them will work.

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't report your console results if they don't do as sberlin said they should!

[I'd be happy to receive private message from Moderators if you have any fuzzy thoughts about this.]

May I suggest you uninstall & reinstall LW. You're not the only person this has happened to. If that doesn't work see this thread.

I have Mac OS X 10.3.6, I tried to use limewire and it would bounce in the dock and disappear. I have updated mac OS X sice the last time I used Limewire.I installed Limewire again (version 4.2.2) and it kept doing the same thing. I tried altering the info.plist file as it had been posted in this forum, but I found no such line, so I couldn't change it. Can someone please help me???

Lord of the Rings November 28th, 2004 09:03 AM

I don't suppose you had a look at any of my links in this thread? lol :D By the way OS 10.3.6 has bugs & has caused numerous people problems. Have a look for a thread called OS 10.3.6 It might be in the OSX installation problems section. With your issue though. I'd at least suggest you do a SAFE start & Repair permissions & try again. Install Standalone Java may help.

Done. My copy of Info.plist already says "<string>LimeWire</string>". I found no such line that states "<string>prelude</string>".

All of this hasn't solved the problem, Limewire is still dying on take off where before (on my old hard drive) it worked just fine.

This is what I get when I option click Limewire in the dock

http://www3.sympatico.ca/g.rutkay/Limewire_dead.jpg

The system is as up to date as it can be. On this machine I can only run up to 10.2.8 (G3 beige 400 MHz)

It did run before. I used it many times on this machine.

Java 1.41 was installed by the software updater.

Lord of the Rings December 17th, 2004 09:56 AM

georger: Did you do a safe start & repair permissions both before & after you installed LW? Something tells me you haven't been to the links given in this thread. There's other options.

georger December 17th, 2004 04:03 PM

Yes I read the thread and tried the advice listed. For the sake of some brevity I simplified my reply.

I've been looking into a few other possibilities. If this works I will do my best to post my findings here.

georger December 17th, 2004 10:35 PM

Ok I've got Limewire running now.

Know what the problem is?

Don't let the system updates run.

I'm running now on 10.2.4 - no upgrades whatsoever. It's as it was installed from the CDs.

Limewire launched properly, it let me configure it and let me browse the network all glitch free.

Some file must have gotten corrupted in Apple's database because when I first tried Limewire I was already upgraded to 10.2.8 via the automatic system updater that runs after install.

Anybody know Steve Jobs' phone number?
-----------------------------
edited for update - I tried running the upgrades once again. Only OS, Java and Quicktime upgrades, nothing else.

Sure enough, Limewire would not load and run at all under 10.2.8

georger December 20th, 2004 11:13 AM

More info:

I tediously went through and applied one upgrade at a time to a virgin installation of 10.2.4 to see which is causing the problem regarding Limewire.

The OS and Quicktime upgrades aren't the cause.

It's the Java 1.4.1 upgrade that causes it.

sberlin December 20th, 2004 11:22 AM

georger,

Download the standalone java update from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120242 and see what happens. Some of the automatic upgrades from software update cause problems.

I did this step now from the link you provided.

Then I rebooted from the startup CD and ran Disk first aid after the installation to check/repair any possible problems (I find "safebooting" with the Shift key causes me video problems, since mine is not a multi-sync monitor).

Rebooted and tried Limewire. Back to the same old problem - Limewire just bounces in the dock and refuses to launch.

Limewire definitely doesn't like Java 1.41

I think the previous version of Java was 1.31. I'll check if it is so and see if that solves me problem.

sberlin December 20th, 2004 03:55 PM

Can you open up your console and see if anything is printed out during the installation or launching of LimeWire?

It's very odd that it's failing to launch. We've tested it on that platform and it has worked fine. (My powerbook is running 10.2.8 with Java 1.4.1 and LimeWire works just fine.)

Salut Georger, the terminal is not the console. Console is an other app found in the utilities folder. You should see some text related to LW in there. Copy and paste it here.
