Default Previewing and quicktime

hi, i am wondering why when i attempt to preview some files my imovie application opens but does not work to preview. is there a way to preview in other apps like my mplayer or vlc? also, this may be really silly, but how can i make vlc or mplayer my default players, rather than quicktime? i am on a G5, using osx 10.3.5...
thanks alot~

That certainly ain't a good thing that iMovie is attempting to opening them up. Dpending upon which version iMovie you have it's import functions are fairly limited!

To make default apps for certain types of files:

(1) I must be just over-tired at the moment but I can't think of the approp method. One technique is to use a file utility (I use mac army knife) to change the file attributes so that the Creator of the file matches that of the app I wish to open it with.

(2) Alternatively, (& probably the best way) is to highlight a sample of that type of file & then CMD + I, then go to the 'Open with' part & choose your App. This should fix the prob. Also it might be wise to rebuild your desktop with whatever utilities you have that can do it. Here's an example: Desktop Rebuilder for OSX Hope this helps! If not, post back. Good luck!

i tried the command I, and it does nothing from my library in limewire. i tried it from my shared folder on my comp's HD, and all it does it give me info about the file, it doesn't allow me to open it with anything. ?? i also still can't figure out how to make another player my default player rather than quick time.
help?

Same principle for audio. I have an image for mp3 setting of default app but I think one per thread is plenty. Just a small clarification: Points 1-3 applies to just that format & Point (4) is for setting as default for 'this & other similar formats' such as other movie types.
