Default what file types are good for mac?

Hi, I'm pretty new here and am wondering what kinds of files work the best, or at all for mac. video files seem to consist of avi, mov, and wmv, while there are other types of files listed as exe, rar, dmg, zip, sit, and bin. I would just like to know which ones would work best for me and are the easiest to apply.
Thanks
