about terminal and the tiny screen

If anybody else has a non-existent terminal screen, and needs to write some new commands for java, I learned that it is caused by a font problem (as many things in the Mac are). if the typeface 'Monaco' isn't in your computer any longer thanTerminal won't work or produce a screen. In 'addressbook', if Helvetica is missing, same thing. Those fonts have to be in the System folder which has about 19 fonts, all apple fonts. I lost Monaco and Helvetica (I have a different one that isn't acceptable to Mac), and can't recover it. So those programs don't work for me.

ALSO, MAKE SURE you name any extra font folders sitting on your desktop waiting to be loaded, something slightly different than 'fonts' because the Mac will take the initiative and load the fonts (it happened to me!)...i.e. names like fontz, fontetc, etc, work.

Does anyone know of a place I can get Apple's Monaco and Helvetica? I tried Limewire, and, gratefully got a thousand other fonts, but not those.
Thanks.

To reinstall the Java or security update, you'll need to delete the equivalent .pkg file version from the receipts folder. You get the "null" message in the Apple installer when a OS X thinks a more recent version is installed. Double-click the harddrive icon, open the Library, open the Receipts folder, then find the file: Java142Update2.pkg or JavaSecurityUpdate4.pkg (whichever is applicable), delete it and try again. eg: Receipts folder sample image

Apparently the Softw Update program which installs over the net can result in incomplete/corrupt installations. That's why we recommend re-installing using the standalone/"offline" installers.

BTW this applies to OS 10.3 users

"you cannot install this software on this volume, This volume does not contain a version of java web start that needs updating"

is what i get + a masive stop sign with a ! in it on the HD icon.

i have also used the find app to find all LW files and deleated em, downloaded a older version of LW, and it still did the same thing.

well i give up trying to sort this one out. Downloaded a Gnutella P2P called Acqlite, it conects to the Gnutella server. it works fine.. so far.

i will keep an eye on LW as i do like using it. but if OSX and LW cant come up with a proper patch/fix for everyone then i am gonna just keep using what ever else is available and does work.

Well I'm glad I spent so much time explaining what to do when mac os gives that warning of unable to install. By gads, why not buy a pc instead. Are mac users really so ... well i guess i could have printed it in double size but doubt it'd make much diff to some people. Good luck with aquaflux. I'm off to view how well my LW is downlding as it always does. Total bandwidth op. :D :)

you did a good job explaining what to do. and i did what you said and i still didnt get anywhere. spent 3 days on this trying to get it to work. even went to java main site to DL java web start bits.. nada.
i will keep checking LW, once a month or so. but i do have things to get on with now i have upgraded from OS9.2.2 (grudgingly) have had a few teething probs but all are sorted now. and i havent even crashed the mac today, so must be doing well!
