new limwire keeps crashing

These new limewire versions 4.10.9 and the previous one just keep quiting on me. Ive never had this problem on older versions.Maybe its my system cant handle the newer ones. I have mac 10.3.9 and I updated the java to 1.4.2 the latest version for my system. I dumped my limewire preferences folder as suggested by a previous post and the virtual memory for limewire seem to be around 450mb. I presume you cant change the real memory for limewire in mac os x as you could in os 9? It could be that my computer is just too old to handle the new ones, Im using a G3 500 Se iMac with 640mb ram. The hard disk seems to be making a lot more "spinning and grinding" noises when i have this new limewire open as if it cant cope with this application. Ive been looking on this site for the prevous versions on limewire but i cant seem to find them any clues about this would be great as at the moment this once great program doesnt work no good no more.

Try turning off the filter settings (that's the stuff that changed with the recent versions) and see if that helps.

mrdownload March 2nd, 2006 05:15 AM

How do i do that it doesnt look like you can turn them off

stief March 2nd, 2006 05:21 AM

There isn't a "turn off" checkbox in the LW Preferences->Filters->Junk settings, so just "forget training data", set sensitivity to low, and the radio button to "display junk in place"

genkokitsu March 7th, 2006 09:00 AM

I've been having the same problem and thought I'd post the crash report here for you guys. I tried resetting the filters as above, and so far it hasn't crashed on me.

Unfortunately, it seems that the crash report is longer than the allowed max post. If anyone has an email I can send this too, if it would help, I would me happy too.

stief March 7th, 2006 02:50 PM

reports can be mailed to the automated bugs@limewire.com (there might be an automated response, but don't expect a follow-up reply).
You can also see/search the automated reports at http://bugreports.limewire.com/bugs/home.jsp when it isn't too busy.

With 1000's of reports, you can see why there won't be a personal response ;)

genkokitsu March 7th, 2006 05:10 PM

I just got a "no such address" error at that address.

Any other suggestions?

stief March 7th, 2006 05:51 PM

thanks for the info: I'd heard that there were some problems with that server, so maybe is is down ATM, or else deprecated.

I'm not sure where else to send the report, but the beta forum has info about sending "stack traces."

During the day (Eastern Standard Time), "direct interaction with the LimeWire community is frequently possible at the #limewire IRC channel on the irc.freenode.net server" as stated on http://www.limewire.org/

genkokitsu March 7th, 2006 07:38 PM

Yea, I can't get irc to work on my computer (I don't think it likes me) but I'll try the email again later.

genkokitsu March 13th, 2006 11:33 AM

I tried disabling the filters as suggested, and it's still crashing. Looks like that had no effect.

mrdownload March 14th, 2006 10:22 AM

same story here with the filters. does it run really slowly on your computer ie. even trying to scroll up and down etc??

genkokitsu March 14th, 2006 10:42 AM

No, it's not slow, it just runs for between one to two hours then crashes.

stief March 14th, 2006 03:53 PM

I'm out of easy answers for your machines. The latest versions work OK here.

Not sure if it is something in your Home Folder, LimeWire Prefs, or maybe even the OS X system.

If you know how to create a new Admin user account, try that and install LW there. If that one runs fine, then you know your system setup is good, and the problem is in the original Home folder.

If the same problems exist, then it points to LW and/or your system.

genkokitsu March 14th, 2006 05:28 PM

Actually, I did just do a clean install of my entire system. It was crashing before that, and it's crashing now. I'll try making a new account and see if that works.

mrdownload March 15th, 2006 01:57 AM

Every other version of limewire up to the the last two versions worked perfectly fine.

tmcdanel March 15th, 2006 08:13 PM

Maybe it is OSX.3 Panther that is the problem. I have been experiencing the same problem.

Does anyone have frequent crashes on Tiger OSX.4?

arvee rudra March 16th, 2006 04:50 AM

I have the same problem with slow scrolling, hard disk starts going nuts after about an hour or less then crashes. I actually can't quit the application either if I want to close it while still open. Can only shut it off with 'force quit'. I am on G3 imac 450 with OSX panther. frustrating.

therughead March 20th, 2006 06:15 PM

mac slows down with new limewire

I seem to have the problem that my mac os x (10.3.9.) slows down extremely when i have the new limewire running (which i downloaded yesterday). Limewire doens't seem to work properly either (i keep seeing the WOD). The older ones worked very well, so i don't know why this one doesn't. Does someone know what is cousing this with your computer? And do you know where older versions of limewire can be found (if any)?

Osx

AFAIK the "next" LW 4.11 beta will have improvements for OSX issues. So hopefully this will improve things for you too. I don't know when it will be released but they're working on such OSX issues experienced.

The next best thing you can do to improve the environment for running LW is upgrade to Tiger 10.4 & update your java from 1.4.2 to 1.5

Java 1.5 on some systems seems to make a particular improvement. But on others the improvements only seem minimal.

Just make sure your incomplete files are kept to a minimum & your shares are less than 2,000

Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue!

Following these tips will reduce chances of such problems! Unfotunately OSX's Java is not as efficient as it should be! ;)
