Default AVI playback

Cannot play AVI files on MAC OS 10.4.11. Have downloaded VLC, have reset Quicktime player but still get no video or audio while a movie is playing.

Is there any messages coming up? Have you checked the file with Bitzi?

Strange VLC cannot play the files. Check also with MPlayer: MPlayer - The Movie Player

There are other codecs to try such as XviD, 3ivx, and those listed under QuickTime's 3rd party extra plug ins page in QT prefs.

WMP on mac is hopeless, always has been. See the note here about Mac OSX CODECs list for Movies/Audio/ Alternate players / Video help forums

Thanks, but sorry Xcom, the Windows XP codec pack does not apply to Mac OSX.

Thanks for the help but so far only partial success. After adding DivX I get video on RealPlayer and DivX but no audio.
To Perrioli: No messages but at least a picture
To Xcom46: I have Windows Media Player for Mac but the default is RealPlayer. Would WPM be better?

Thanks everyone for your advice. I am now getting audio and video on most formats. Either my machine was being ornery and has now decided to become more cooperative, or it was the fault of a succession of flawed downloads. Again, thank you for your generous assistance.
