Angry Please help! Can't play AVI movie files

Running OS 9.1, 256 MB RAM, Limewire Pro, Cable, Home.

I'm having no problem downloading full length Mpeg and AVI files however when I try to play the AVI files I get a message saying Quicktime is unable to recognize the file format. When I try to launch the MPEG files I get a message that the MPEG movie could not be opened because a software component is missing. I was under the impression that Quicktime could play both AVI and MPEG's. I downloaded Windows Media Player 7 for Mac and have Quicktime 6 (free version). Still no luck. Is this a plugin or browser problem? I just want to play these simple file formatts.

Any help would be appreciated

Andre

QT Pro on OS 9 will play more files, but not all. The mpeg file format is not simple, since the files can be compressed with many different compression schemes (codecs) and still be called an mpeg file.
If yo have access to OSX, the files can often be played by one of the following free players.

Default DiVX Doctor

You may also be able to play the files by converting them to mpeg format using DiVX Doctor. This is especially effective if you can play the file but you can't hear the sound.

In OSX occasionally I have to run DiVX Doctor from Classic (OS 9) just so I can allocate it more memory to get through a really big file. I think DiVX Doctor is available for OS9 and OSX, but I'm not sure.

I really wish people would share mpegs instead of avi's. Oh well, at least avi's beat Windows Media Player format. I have never come across a WMP file that didn't suck.

Sometimes these are windows media files. Why they show up as quicktime files, I have no idea.

Change the extension to wmv and open them from Windows Media player and voila.
